1 1 Students will create a magazine through a student editorial board that will issue a call for articles, peer review the articles, and design/layout the articles for a class publication. Each student will be a member of an editorial board and submit two articles for other publications. Objectives 1. Write for several authentic, professional audiences. 2. Critically read and respond to other students writing. 3. Revise own work repeatedly to hone skills as a writer. Writing for Publication What we re attempting to do is get your writing out of a classroom environment and put you to work writing and communicating to real people outside the classroom. Since you don t have time to submit work to outside editors and receive feedback, we re going to simulate the process as nearly as possible between different groups in this and other English 450 classes. Dual Roles Writer and Editor You will have two roles in class: writer and editor. As a writer, you will submit your work to editorial boards in the classes to be considered for publication. As an editor, you will help writers revise their work until it is ready for publication in your class magazine and produce a finished magazine modeled on an actual Your basic responsibilities in each role are as follows: grade requires 1-2 submissions and 750+ words, no successful submissions earns a D. Student who submit no articles receive an F.) Revise those articles until they are ready for publication. Research and write a department article for your own editorial board s Editor Analyze the target magazine and plan your own publication focused on that target audience. Read submissions and evaluate them for publication. Write revision letters helping writers improve their articles. Produce a finished, polished class Guidelines for Writers You must write for at least two different magazines on two different topics. As a writer, decide what magazine you want to write for, check out those guidelines, and review the call for papers and writer s guidelines posted on BlackBoard. When you have found a call for articles that appeals to you, reserve your spot by posting your name and brief article description on the magazine s discussion board. If the call for articles has been answered, you must choose something that is still available. Once you have signed up, you are committed. Writer Write articles for at least two different magazines. (An A grade requires 2-3 successful submissions and words, a B grade requires 1-2 submissions and words, a C What s Inside Editorial Boards Editor Application Process Magazine Proposal Magazine Analysis Call for Articles 5 Research Report 6 Visual Portfolio 6 Review/Revise Articles 6 Process Strategy 7 1 Submission Deadlines and Acceptance Article submission deadlines are determined 2 by the editorial boards. To 2 meet minimum submission 4 requirements, your articles 4 must be complete and coherent and meet the minimum length requirement of words (2500 word

If you post the submission after the deadline, the magazine cannot accept your submission. Editorial Boards Editorial boards consist of an editor in chief and sponsoring editors. Students will apply for these positions through formal letters of application and resumes. Students will each submit two cover letters and two resumes. One set will be for the position of editor in chief, the other for the position of sponsoring editor. A faculty committee will review applications and select editors in chief. Editors in chief will review applications for sponsoring editors. Editors in chief will select sponsoring editors to become members of the editorial board. All applicants must be on an editorial board. Editors in chief and sponsoring editors as a board will determine specific individual roles/assignments and propose a class Editor Applications All students will apply with a cover letter and resume for editor in chief and sponsoring editor positions. Faculty members will choose editors in chief and editors in chief will choose sponsoring editors. create a startup Successful applicants will demonstrate strong writing and management skills, with attention to detail. Editor in chief will be responsible for the formation of the magazine and will be the primary decision maker. Decisionmaking ability and delegation are also important. Organizational and people skills are also a must to work with a new staff. Editor will hire sponsoring editors from candidate letters. Some design experience would be a bonus; although dedication and a willingness to learn would also be considered. Creativity is also a strong plus to distinguish the new magazine from competing publications. Sponsoring Editor Job Description. Spori Publications is seeking sponsoring editors. Successful applicants will demonstrate strong writing and management skills, with attention to detail. Editing skills are also essential to create a first-rate publication. Organization and people skills are a must to work with authors and submissions to create a successful Sponsoring editors should demonstrate the ability to work in teams as well as an ability to work independently. Creativity is also a strong plus to distinguish the new magazine from competing publications and to make your section of the magazine integrated and your own. Dedication and desire to produce a first-rate publication are important. Some design experience would be a bonus; although dedication and a willingness to learn would also be considered. Guidelines for Editors Your major responsibility is to help writers submitting articles revise their work until it is good enough to be published in your Together, your board will be in charge of producing and publishing a class magazine modeled on the target Editorial boards will determine each member s specific roles. Generally, here are possibilities for different roles. Editor in Chief Job Description. Spori Publications is seeking an editor in chief to 2

Maintains records of submissions, resubmissions, and those articles accepted or rejected by the board. Compiles the Writes the letter from the editor introducing the finished Sponsoring Editors Responsible for all submitted articles. Responsible for all revision letters for submitted articles. Responsible for working with authors to generate exceptional, professional articles Responsible for incorporating articles into class Responsible to recommend graphics, advertisers, and advertisements to accompany articles. Submission Process You will receive different articles responding to your board s call for articles. As a board, you will review each article to decide if you will accept or reject it. If you choose not to accept the article submission, you, as a group, will formulate a revision letter in which you offer constructive revision suggestions to the writer. The sponsoring editor in charge of that article is responsible to write the final letter. The writer can resubmit the article until the final decision of the magazine editors. As a courtesy to your writers, please return their articles within 48 hours. And as a courtesy to the editors, writers will submit revisions as soon as possible. As a board, then, you will perform these major tasks: 1. Magazine Proposal. Write a proposal seeking approval to create a magazine which will include a magazine analysis. 2. Call for Articles. Issue a call for articles by preparing writer s guidelines that outline the types of featured articles you d like to publish in your 3. Magazine Feature Research Report. Write cover feature article research based article by board members. Review past issues of your target magazine for ideas of researched feature article. 4. Magazine Visual Rhetoric Portfolio. Create and demonstrate the layout, design, and advertising for your magazine for your prospective writers. 5. Article Revision Suggestions. Make revision suggestions for writers working through the submission and revision process. 6. Create Magazine. Create a professional class magazine by incorporating cover story, feature articles, and layout/design. Submission Acceptance Remember, accept only work you want to represent your publication. Your final publication will be graded on the merit of the work you choose to include in it. You cannot rewrite others work, but you can edit. All writing must be done by the author. You can offer revision suggestions, suggest a writing conference, but you cannot revise others writing for them. For any submission to be accepted, it must meet these three requirements: The sponsoring editor for that article must recommend its acceptance. The article must meet the standards of the The article must be the writer s own work. 3
4 4 Magazine boards are not required to accept any submission, but you will want to help your writers get their material to the point that it is publishable so that you have something to print in your finished Magazine Planning Projects This section has four parts: a formal proposal requesting approval to create a magazine, a target magazine analysis, a call for articles suggesting writing prompts for submissions you wish to receive, and a formal research report as a foundation for your magazine s cover article. Magazine Proposal Description Spori Publications has determined to invest in a new magazine and is seeking to fund new magazines. Because a potential magazine requires significant money, Spori Publications is looking for credible and dedicated parties to apply. Publishing Problem/Need Identify an existing publishing need by giving Spori Publishers necessary background information. Prove that a new magazine need exists, that a need must be filled. The more evidence you present, the more likely you are to persuade action to accept your proposal. Avoid vague generalizations; provide details. In the Problem section proved an analysis of the types of articles the magazine publishes explaining how it reflects the interests and attitudes of the magazine s target audience. Qualifications and Guidelines Applicants must be currently enrolled in English 450. Proposals must be for a popular Spori Publications is open to a wide variety of potential markets; however, the market is saturated with literary magazines and will therefore not consider funding a new one. Spori Publications precludes sexually exploitive materials or excessively violent materials. Because Spori Publications is looking to share in the costs, proposed magazines must consider alternate sources of advertising income. Late applications not accepted. Proposal Components Formal letter of intent which addresses the following topics: Type of proposed magazine Name of magazine with reasons for choice Focus of first issue Unique qualities your editorial board possesses to bring magazine to fruition Potential sources of advertising Possible problems you foresee Request for approval; indicate your editorial board s willingness to discuss your plan with Spori Publications. Job descriptions and divisions of responsibilities for each editor Outline of magazine sections and perhaps possible topics for each section List of potential topics for feature article Potential advertisers and/or products Audience analysis for proposed magazine an analysis of the types of articles the magazine will publish explaining how they reflect the interests and attitudes of the magazine s target audience Magazine Analysis Using the target magazine, write an analysis of it. Be sure to include the following: A description of the magazine s target audience An analysis of the magazine s advertising explaining how it reflects the target audience An analysis of the types of articles and sections or departments the magazine publishes explaining 4
5 5 how they reflect the interests and attitudes of the target audience An analysis of the magazine s writing style explaining how the articles are written reflect the competency of the magazine s target audience and their assumed relationship with the magazine s writers A conclusion summarizing your analysis findings As a board, assign each member a separate section of the analysis. One member should write the target audience analysis and conclusion, another the advertising section, another the section on types of articles, and another the writing style section. Each member should plan to write at least two well developed paragraphs, and you ll work together as a board to make sure the final paper is wellconstructed and polished. Magazine Analysis Steps Below is a list of questions that will help you explore each section of your magazine analysis. While your analysis may not answer all these questions, considering each question will lead you in the right direction. see themselves? How much money do they have? What are they most interested in? Types of Articles- Look at the types of articles published. What type of person would be interested in these articles? What do they assume about the reader? How much does he/she know? Are articles for novices or experts? What do articles emphasize the latest and hottest? The tried and true? The practical? What are the sections or departments within the magazine? Writing Style- Look at the writing style used in the articles. What do readers have to know to understand these articles? What does that tell us about them? (Do they have to know a specialized vocabulary? Are they well educated, or are articles written on a fairly simple level?) How are readers treated by writers as close friends, fellow professionals? Novices? What do writers assume readers already know? Do writers assume any shared values or attitudes in their readers? How is the reflected in their writing? What does the style and tone of the writing tell us about the target audience? Genre- (This information is closely connected to target audience.) What type of magazine is this? Within that type of genre, where does your magazine fit? How does the target magazine compare with other similar magazines how is it similar or different? Target Audience- Who is the target audience? Demographics How old are they? How much money do they have? How do they see themselves, or how do they want to be seen by others? What do they know? How educated are they? What is their attitude towards life? Do they have definite political leanings? What issues and activities interest them most? Are they learning new skills or do they already know a great deal about the magazine s main topic? Advertising- Look at the magazine s advertising. Who will buy the things advertised in this magazine? How do they Call for Articles As editors, you decide what kinds of articles writers will submit to you. Think of your writers as you create your prompts. Giving your writers almost impossible tasks will make it very difficult for them to produce good work. Try to create prompts that you as writers would find interesting and plausible. Each writing prompt should include the following: 5
6 6 Topic (general or specific topic you want the writer to address) Aim (What is the goal of the article?) Format (Range of length: words, columns, spacing, headings, etc.) Post the article prompts in your magazine folder on BlackBoard. Magazine Feature Research Report As an editorial board, you will generate a formal, academic research report which will become the cover story for your This scholarly research paper should be documented in MLA style and be approximately 2000 words in length. Magazine Visual Rhetoric Portfolio As an editorial board you will create and demonstrate the layout, design, and advertising for your magazine for your prospective writers. Review Article Submissions Carefully read the criteria for the article you re reviewing. Read each submission carefully, using the criteria and your own knowledge of your magazine and audience to evaluate each submission. Take notes listing both the strengths and weaknesses of each article. Respond to the writer after reading the article. The editor makes suggestions The editor must respond to each submission and revision. Revision Suggestions Revision suggestions are the responsibility of the sponsoring editor. Revision suggestions should accomplish two things: They should point out the strengths and weaknesses of the submission, and they should offer specific, concrete suggestions for revision. Treat your writers as you would like to be treated by your editors. You may want to work through the article paragraph by paragraph, pointing out the strengths and weakness of each paragraph while offering specific suggestions for revision. Written revision suggestions are encouraged; however, face-to-face conferences may also be necessary. It is easier to be thorough in your first response. The writer s third revision is not the time to suddenly decide the essay doesn t really fit the article assignment or won t really appeal to your audience. The more specific and helpful your first revision suggestions are, the better the revised draft you will receive. Take time to do it right the first time, and you ll save yourself and the author time and multiple headaches later. 6
