14 t 13 BARKING AT AIRPLA I think it would be nice if we got to the point of not having to do a video of every song. by Ron Fell Ki arnes is a veteran of the hit aking process. She and husband Dave Ellingson have collaborated on songs for ore than a decade, while Ki has worked with the best usicians in the business, her band and has an aazing talent for getting out to proote her usic directly to radio. n one of her any visits to The Gavin Report we grabbed her for a sitdown interview. RF: How did you begin your recording career? K: I signed on with Jiy Bowen as a writer. Prior to that tie I was playing clubs around LA. The old grind of five sets a night and getting really tired of it. Mike Settle introduced e to Bowen and I started writing for a sall salary, but at least enough so that I could stop playing the clubs. In those days I was real prolific, Suddenly I was a writer! So I wrote ten zillion songs a day. I shared deo tie with John David Souther and Glenn Frey. They sang together as Longbranch Pennywhistle and wrote for Jiy. We would go in and do our deos together, help each other out and sing on each other's deos. I'd never spent tie in the studio, so it was great to be turned loose with an engineer. Everytie I wrote a song I was able to get a band together and put it down on tape. It was incredible in ters of learning the whole recording process without soeone being there dictating. RF: Do you reeber any songs fro that era? Did any of the see the light of day in ters of other artists recording any of the songs you were recording? K: h... a lot of near isses. We worked on a soundtrack for a fil called Vanishing Point. In fact, the thee "Nobody Knows" was y first single on Jiy's label, Aos Records. And of course thought it would be an instant hit I I' glad nobody told e it would be awhile longer. But that lead to y first albu on Aos. It was called "Rest n Me ". RF: Was this listed as Ki arnes or was this a Ki and David project? K: "Nobody Knows" was Ki and Dave and that fil was Ki and Dave but the first albu was Ki arnes. And fro then I signed with a different publisher, happel Music and one of y songs, a deo of a song called "ou're A Part f the GAVIN REPRT /July 16. l981

15 put I Me" was cut by Rita oolidge, David Anderle was producing Rita at the tie for A &M. He asked for a bunch of y songs, so we sent over a lot of other deos and he called happel and said, "Why isn't Ki recording these?" So that led to David signing e on A &M. The first A &M albu I did was "Ki arnes" with Mentor Willias producing. The second A &M albu was called "Sailing" and Jerry Wexler produced that. I recorded that one down in Muscle Shoals with Barry Beckett and Wexler and what a great tie. I have real fond eories of doing that albu. Wexler taught e a lot of what a producer's rule was. He said, "It's not up to e to be a dictator and try to change you." RF: Why was Muscle Shoals even then a hot bed for recording? It's not that big of a town. K: Well, the Muscle Shoals rhyth section. Incredibly good players and there was and is a certain sound that coes out of there that isn't Nashville, isn't Mephis, isn't L.A., isn't New ork and was soething really special, and that's where Wexler did all his recording. And I loved the sound of all his records coing out of there, so it was easy for e to go down and record there. RF: ne of the first ties I reeber you hitting as a singles artist was on "More Love' which, ironically was not a song you wrote, but was a Sokey Robinson song. K: "ou're A Part f Me" with Gene otton, was inside the Top Forty. My first hit, which went top five, and before "More Love" was "Don't Fall In Love with a Dreaer ", which I sang with Kenny Rogers. RF: ou've had an opportunity, unlike any artists, to have people like Sinatra, Streisand and Kenny Rogers record your songs. Fro a writing standpoint, with the success of those records, do you find ore songs are being subitted to you? K: I do get an awful lot sent to e. An awful lot of cassettes. RF: Is it hard to listen to the all? Have you ever found a ge, have you ever found a song through this subission process? K: Never. ou know how I usually find songs? Maybe a cut that was a single that I think should have ade it and didn't for whatever reason, or just a cut off an albu that I particularly liked that I into y file to save. A cut off the new albu, "Touch And Go" was a single for Any Trouble a couple of years ago. It was a great song. In fact I first heard the deo and loved it before they cut it for their albu. Nothing happened, but it's one of those songs that shouldn't be lost RF: In the process of choosing songs, soe people will put an albu together of ore trax than they end up using. I've heard of soe artists recording 48 songs, aybe in rough for. bviously you have to gag at that today with the cost of doing that. K: h yeah. RF: And soe artists clai they go in and conceive at the last inute, putting songs together spontaneously and actually writing during the studio process. When you're putting an albu together, how uch preparation goes into it before it gets to the studio and how uch of it is inspiration in the studio? K: It's really a cobination of both. I don't write an entire albu before we start recording. If I have three things that we think are strong, I get the band together with Bill uoo, who co- produced with e, and we'll go and rehearse until those three or four sound like we want the to sound. Then we go in and try the. And where the changes coe are in the studio. We record the the way we rehearsed the and then go back and listen and it's either right or that's when you discover that you thought it sounded great in rehearsal but hearing it back on tape, soething is wrong. We rehearse as uch "live" as possible, not overdubbing. like live vocals. The band likes to play live. That spontaneity is so iportant... to go for the feel. I don't like slick, polished records. And I think for us the only way to get that is to have a lot of freedo in the studio, to be well rehearsed and then let whatever happens in the studio happen. RF: Does that ake your live show ore legitiate because you're able to duplicate what you've done in the studio? K: eah! It's the sae band. We've cut live. The singing is live so you don't have to figure out what to do to ake it sound good. It's the sae people. It does, I think, ake it ore legit. RF: How did you and Bill uoo coe together? K: Through doing deos. The inute I heard hi play he started playing on y deos and helping with the songs I would write and that led to forever. He's really y right and left hand. He's the only keyboard player I've et that can hear e play it on the piano and sit down and play it with all the little nuances and the sae feel. ou can't teach soeone feel. He just picks up on it and then of course plays it great, which I can't. I' great in y own living roo and that's it. People could technically sit down and copy your notes but there could be the key ingredient issing, the heart you wrote it with. When I write, I write on piano and I write lyrics and elody, I write it all at the sae tie at the piano. Bill just knows how to ake it all work. RF: I sensed he really cae into his own around Mistaken Identity. It seeed like he had ore ipact on your usic or had ore of a doinant influence at that point. K: I can go back... "More Love ", the intro is a little classical piece that was never planned, that was Bill sitting down at the synthesizer and going "do- do -do", playing the little passage and we went, "What is that. That's wonderful??!!" We put it on tape, but it was never planned. But that's all Bill's. "Don't Fall ver The Dreaer ", the whole Gideon albu, when we wrote the albu we did a deo albu to present to Kenny (Rogers) to do the recording, and of course Bill did the deo albu and then went to Nashville when I recorded it with Kenny and played on everything. RF: The Gideon albu was a rather courageous step for any artist to take. To do soething as theatic as that was a risk. It could have set you and /or Kenny back. K: U... well the concept cae fro Kenny, in that he wanted to be a cowboy. We ade hi a odern day cowboy, as opposed to the ld West and drew personality -wise fro the Gable character in The Misfits and Jaes Garner in Rockford Files. That rascal, you know, the wink, the sense of huor, I love Rocky. I love that character. So, before the songs were written for Gideon we had to coe up with a story for this character: where he was born, how he died. The albu opens with his funeral. Then we went back and wrote the songs to fit the concept. It was a real challenge because I' not a... oh. I' not... RF: ou don't write novels. K: No. RF: Well you do soe great three and four inute novels but aybe those are short stories. K: I' not an assignent writer, I ean I just write. I don't have any set tie, routine or schedule. I just write whatever coes into y head. So, to have to get specific was a challenge. Dave and I both wrote it. RF: Do you and Dave, as writers, have specific responsibilities for elodies and lyrics or do you trade off? July /the GAVIN REPRT 14

16 K: We both do both. Soe of the songs I write with uoo, with y druer raig Kraf. We've written a lot with Duane Hitchings. "I'll Be Here Where The Heart is" for Flashdance, and y druer was involved in that one. "Voyeur" was Duane. And off the current albu, ABADABADANG, we wrote with Duane and I co- produced ABADABA that's the only track I didn't do with uoo. It's not soething I like to do. Writing is real personal because I can't sit down at a specific tie in a roo. I don't really like to write with other people, but these few people I' real cofortable with. RF: At various points in your career, not only have you collaborated in writing, but you've collaborated in perforance. We've already talked about Gene otton, Kenny Rogers and Streisand. Did those experiences vary? bviously the difference between Gene otton and Barbra Streisand has to be night and day. But fro a collaboration standpoint as a perforer, did you have to approach those differently? For instance, were they all recorded face to face with the other perforer? K: The one thing that they all had in coon was that we perfored the face to face. I feel strongly that if you're singing a duet, one person shouldn't put down their part and the other person over -dub it. If it's a duet, look at each other. When we did "Dreaer" I was used to singing it in a key that was good for e and that's the only trouble in doing duets, finding the key that both can sing in and we ended up doing it in a key that was good for Kenny. The elody had to be r , 1.! ade up on the spot, but I think it was a lot easier because we were singing it live at the sae tie. RF: It seeed about the sae tie of "Bette Davis Eyes" and Mistaken Identity'your usic started to take on ore visuality. I saw one of the press releases where you used the ter "oral ovies ". When you were doing "Bette Davis Eyes" was there a concept for a video already there? K: No, MN was not around yet. it also was not around for "Draw f The ards ", the second single fro the Mistaken Identity albu. Even when Voyeur cae out, MN was not in all the arkets it's in now. In fact, we didn't have it in LA. and I used to get reports fro friends in New ork saying, "I saw the video seven ties today!" So, I did a bunch of videos before that, but Bette Davis wasn't a specific concept for a video, we already saw it in ters of a visual I guess because we always like to record that way. I reeber in rehearsal talking about how it should end. We were hashing around whether think it should I end or how it should go out, saying to Val Garay, who produced Mistaken Identity albu, "No, it's just got to go out the way it does because she turns and just walks away." In y ind, I pictured the person singing this, turning and walking away. Not stopping, no grand finale. Now, Voyeur was supposed to be an entire video albu. And I wish it had been. That is a huge regret because wrote the I albu with that in ind and put so uch into it. I wanted Voyeur to be a video albu. I wanted the whole thing done. But things that had nothing to do with the usic got in the way, unfortunately. RF: Doing a video albu would have been a ajor financial coitent. K: Well, at that tie it would have been EMI. Ji Mazza president of EMI, felt so strongly about that albu that he wanted people to see it visually. So the coitent on his part was there. get a cold... y When I voice gets real clear. That's not good! RF: What did we iss by not having "Voyeur" in full for? K: I don't know. We had plans. I was going to do it in London with Russell Mulcahy who did y first five videos. I've never seen anything of Rusell's that I didn't like. The two of us working together worked. would have liked to have done it I then because there weren't so any videos around. RF: I've sensed in watching, that they're running out of ideas. K: h, burn out! After Russell's first videos, we saw a whole rash of videos that would copy what he was doing. When I started doing videos years ago, I would argue into the night how great videos were. People were saying they were terrible and that the listener should be able to use his or her iagination. Now I think it would be nice if we could get to the point of not having to do a video for EVER song, and it wouldn't hurt your record. And I think soe of y songs are better left to the listener's iagination. There are an awful lot of video people out there who are not in the usic business and don't know the first thing about usic and they're suddently working with an artist who has spent six straight onths putting their life into an albu. The copany coes in and says "Here's what your song really eans. Here's our concept We're gonna dress you up to look like a... whatever. Now be sure to show up at ten o'clock and when it's finished we'll send you a copy." It's as archaic as if I went into the recording studio and did y vocals and then never heard the played back. But the people I worked with for the two singles fro the new albu were wonderful and real sensitive to how I wanted to be portrayed as an artist RF: Are these videos for "razy In The Night" and "At,adabadango" your first perforance video which include your band? K: Well now. ou see. ou've just said it I've done videos with y band perforing before but they're always edited out So, everybody asks, "Why haven't you ever used your band in your videos?" They were there!! It's just that the director didn't want the. n INVISIBLE HANDS, we shot for two days and nights straight By the orning of the second day, after being there all the tie and looking like hell, they (the orning people) said, "We're ready for your perforance piece. Get the band." I can't tell you how exhausted we were. When finally saw the edited video I y first question was, "Wheré s the band?" They (the video people) said, 'We couldn't use the. They didn't have any energy. They were dead." Boy did I lose it I went RAZ!"""" The producer and director had lost track of whose video it was. RF: What about the crew you've just worked with? K: Greg Gold and Doinic Sena. Doinic is one of the best cineatographers I've ever worked with. I didn't see one second of fil that couldn't have been used. I went to all the editing sessions and really was a part of it. How can it not be that way? ou can't iagine what concepts soe people coe up with. I've had to throw out two videos in the past because I looked as foolish as I felt RF: ould you afford to ake a video for a track that never becoes a single? K: ou would have to have an incredibly wonderful idea. The hope would be that you could turn a lot of people on to the albu. In the early days of MN it ight have been possible. But they're getting tight now, as tight as radio. So it's the the GAVIN REPRT /July 26, IABS

17 I didn't sae deal. Now, if the artist was super, super hot, anything could get played. RF: Do you find yourself aking ore rock records than ballads? r do you still have the sae balance of both in your albus? K: I just do what I want to do. I wouldn't want to sit through an albu of just ballads. ou'd fall asleep. But I think they're special. Its like a live show. ou can do a show of Kick -ass rock and roll and suddenly you coe down to the ballad. The contrast akes it special. RF: What in hell did BARKING AT AIRPLANES ean? K: ou can bark at airplanes anyplace, anytie. If you could write down AAAWW """"""" that would be y answer. It's just having fun. RF: Where did this song coe in the process of creating the albu? Was it a spontaneous thing in the studio, or was this one of the ges you brought with you to the studio? K: Part way through the albu. It was soething fro hoe. I always look for soething out of left field. "Bent" is y favorite word in life. When we cut the song I knew it was a single. RF: Do you pretty uch deliver a finished albu to the label? And do you ever get sent back to the studio to re -work or add on? K: No. I deliver a final albu. But quite often. after finishing an albu and playing it for the label I' so excited that I go and write a song or two. n this albu, after ixing and playing it for EMI, we went back and did PIK UP THE PHNE and RUGH EDGES. It was one that had to be there. Ry ooder played chilling guitar and he's soebody I've wanted to play with on one of y albus for years. Martha Davis sang and Jaes Ingra cae in and did soe singing that was fabulous. RUGH EDGES also reflects how I feel about aking usic. It's about rough edges being good, not bad. RF: Speaking of rough edges. our voice is very distinctive because of its texture. K: God! RF: Does your voice require a lot of rest between perforances? K: Knock on wood. If I' on the road singing everyday, it keeps e in shape. But I don't run into probles because this is y voice. I' not saying I can't strain y voice but nights when we've done tracks... when we go all night and I really have to reach for it, I will lose y voice. When I have to watch y voice ore than any other tie is when I get a cold, because y voice gets real clear. THAT'S NT GD!! RF: Heaven forbid. K: I know (laughs). It's not the tie to be in the studio. RF: Did the sudden and total ipact of your nuber one hit, BETTE DAVIS EES, cause you to rush around to radio stations accelerating your prootion of the song and increasing your visability? K: I have been running around to radio stations since y earliest singles. I can reeber running around with NBD KNWS. The label. Aos Records, was distributed by Bell (later to becoe Arista). went out with the Bell people for ore than 3 weeks. And I think for every ABM albu I would go out for at least three weeks. With MRE LVE on EMI harlie Minor, y buddy, was still with the... we went to every station. I have pals out there that I call up and keep in touch with. They've been good to e all these years. RF: Is it different now, visiting stations? K: The difference is that there are appointents now. The way I used to do it was driving along, hitting stations. I'd go in and say, "Anybody here? an I coe in and introduce yself and play you y new record?" That was hard. I like radio now for their input If you get away fro it you forget their needs and what they like to hear and play. RF: Do you listen to a lot of radio at hoe in Los Angeles? K: In y car, yeah. But when I' recording y albus over long periods of tie, I' usic'ed -out Also, I don't want to be influenced by what I ight hear. When we ake an albu, I don't want to sound like anybody else and I don't want to be trendy. Ever. RF: But do hit records still have an influence? K: eah! I like the new Paul oung song. I heard it and went, "It's so siple. The stateent... why didn't I think of that?" RF: Now that you've finished the albu, what will you be doing for the rest of the year? K: I'll do ore videos, for the third and fourth singles and I'll be doing ore prootion for the albu. I try to get to Europe once a year for a tour and prootion. That can take a onth. I need to get out and tour. It has been a couple of years now and the band and I are overdue. RF: Artists tend to bitch about being on the road... even writing songs about it. Do you have that under control? K: I do now. I used to. But the last three tours have been the best I love y band. They're the greatest guys and that helps. But I don't go out for too long. Five weeks ax. Then we take a break. I like to finish every tour when we're not quite ready to quit. The last few tours have actually been a great relief. There are so any pressures at hoe. When I go on the road the only thing I have to worry about is showing up at the soundcheck and doing the show. The road is a sanctuary for e. It has really changed. It has coe full circle. He didn't erely have the idea... he got up and did soething about it. And that's the rub. It couldn't have been that easy to get Dylan, Jagger, Madonna and the rest of the on the phone. But he obviously persisted, and the results are history (and historical). I had the idea yself but was just too lazy to leave Mary Tyler Moore re -runs and do anything about it. f course if I had gotten off y duff I would have been lucky to reach Steve & Eydie or The Rip hords. So we enthusiastically endorse the idea of the Nobel oittee awarding their huanistic scar to the an who deonstrated to the world that the people of rock and roll have ore than a little bit of soul. After all, Henry Kissinger won the thing and all he ever did was a startling ipression of Rich Little. Since he has already banked uncountable illions fro the three RK flicks and can only wear one pair of pants or drive one designer car at a tie, here's our challenge to Sly: ontribute every penny of your RAMB earnings to LIVE AID and watch how fast the Peace Prize coittee notices. ou'll ake the history books and do a hell of a job soothing soe of the people who thought Rabo's violence was excessive. What you'll do is actually turn RAMB into a an of peace, while donating ore to world hunger than five LIVE AID spectaculars could ever hope to do. We watched the Dick lark- hosted AB network re -cap of the concerts and felt that there was a bizarre kind of tie warp twist in hearing Mr. Aerican Bandstand talking about To Petty, The Bootown Rats and Phil ollins. We still identify the ageless King of Beachnut with Fabian, Avalon and onnie Francis... and we wondered where they were. Investigation has revealed that the three were working a bar itzvah being held by the one Jewish faily in ankton, South Dakota. They all sent regrets, but it sure would have been nice to hear VENUS, TURN ME LSE, and STUPID UPID right after the WH reunion. It certainly was considerate of MTV to superipose shots of their Vee -Jays swaying and clapping in heartfelt appreciation, as Paul Mcartney and associate legends were perforing their oving LET IT BE finale. The Music hannel was ost thoughtful and respectful of the intelligence of their audience in allowing us to view the ecstasy on the faces of Martha Quinn and her cohorts during Paul's stirring perforance. Actually this gives us another creative idea: What about a special Nobel prize for Nina Blackwood's hairdresser? We'd have it in the for of an eggbeater ounted on a forica plaque. In But Seriously Folks conclusion, we feel soe real sense of pride that we duped- on -by- the -public people of the usic business have shown society that we're really about ore than questionable lyrics and payola. We, thanks to Geldof and so any others, did soething that Bank f Aerica and Xerox and MGM and General Motors didn't do. And despite all our negative ink by the general press, the results can't be argued. It's just this siple: There are people who will survive thanks to LIVE AID! 28 N TRIAL WITH LNE JUSTIE Lead Singer Maria McKee MARIA McKEE of LNE JUSTIE by Keith /Kent Zieran n April , The Los Angeles Ties ran a five page cover story in their prestigious Sunday alendar section on a newly signed Los Angeles band. Lone Justice and their lead singer, Maria McKee, obtained what any up and coing bands would kill for -a well publicized record deal coplete with a year to establish theselves usically before releasing any product plus an article in the Ties by Robert Hilburn. Not bad for a band that started out in 1982 as being a new usic band with a ountry perspective. Fored in the suer of '82 by guitarist Ryan Hedgecock and a then seventeen -yearold McKee, Lone Justice eventually shed their ountry skin in favor of an aggressive, "excitable" rock sound. Their debut albu, Lone Justice was released in April and their latest single is entitled "Sweet Sweet Baby ". After the ixed blessing of opening for U2 on tour, Lone Justice has just copleted a short club tour on their own. We spoke to Maria as Lone Justice was just getting ready to leave Boston and fly to klahoa where they joined the To Petty tour. While Lone Justice's career has started off on a fast and furious note, there are no shortcuts when it coes to gaining gradual acceptance with usic tans and prograers. By the tie it cae around it had already gotten out of proportion. We developed this attitude about our press where we just plod along and do our job. If they write about us, great. If they don't, great Soeties I don't even read y reviews because you can get caught up in what people have to say about you. We just try to do what we have to do without taking that sort of thing to heart. KZ: That LA Ties piece entioned that one label wanted to start you out as a Nashville based ountry act and then cross you over. MM: eah! God yeah. KZ: That sounds like an interesting concept to e. Lone Justice could have been a young version of an Alabaa type band. Maybe it would have been a little bizarre. MM: eah, it would have been a little too KZ: Benont Tench (keyboardist for To Petty & the Heartbreakers) played with Lone Justice for a while. How was that? MM: He actually joined the band for a whole year and it was such a good experience for us. Since he's been playing in the sae band for so long, he has a real sensitivity about when to lay back and when to support and give to a perforer while he's onstage. His keyboard stuff gave us a lot of inspiration because he's got so uch soul. He and (producer) Jiy lovine did a collaborative effort as far as helping the band turn the cianges. We were pretty sloppy in the beginning. We were good but we were kind of sloppy because we would just get up there and play these wild ountry stop songs. We didn't have any direction as far as songs were concerned and that's where Jiy lovine really helped out Jiy said, "Look, you've got to write songs because that's the ost iportant thing. ou can sing your head off but people are going to reeber the songs. Bands coe and go, but songs always stay." KZ In your early days, Lone Justice was luped in with bands like The Long Ryders, Rank and File, and Jason & the Scorchers? Did that sit well with you? MM: That was fine. We used to play together. We had the sae sort of vision in the sense of joining the rural and urban cultures together. We all tend to agree there. We did our first tour ever with Rank and File. Soe of our first gigs were opening for the and The Long Ryders. Then Jason opened for us a year ago. KZ I reeber when you were signed. It seeed like there was a whole year where you didn't rush out any product. MM: It was great We didn't have all these songs together and, like I said, Benont and Jiy helped us tighten it up. We played a lot live. I think Geffen Records was really sypathetic towards our situation of being such a young band. KZ Is that when your ountry sound shifted to a three guitar rock band? MM: The three guitars? No, we just added (rhyth guitarist Tony Gilkyson) about six onths ago. We decided when Benont left that we still needed soething else to fill it out My rhyth guitar playing live leaves a lot to be desired. My guitar is ore like a thrashing instruent, alost a percussion instruent Tony and Ryan (Hedgecock) trade rhyth and lead. It's alost like a Ron Wood /Keith Richards exchange. Plus, I like to throw the guitar down and dance a lot bizarre. I don't know. I think it's liiting. I really do. I like what we do now because we can play any kind of usic we want We'd be stuck in a ountry thing. Plus, (ountry listeners) are not ready to accept what we have to give the in Nashville. We play so aggressive live it's alost like a punk rock show. They would have laughed us off the stage at the Grand ld pry. Hopefully in years to coe, we ight have soething to do with (the Nashville scene). Bands like us and Jason & the Nashville Scorchers ight open their inds to us a little bit I don't think the ountry arket is quite ready to accept bands like us. If it was heading towards a lead- singer- and - her -back -upusicians trip, we would quit toorrow. I would be nowhere without the four of the. KZ But there was a tie when you weren't the priary singer. Wasn't it a two vocalist thing in the early days? MM: Ryan would sing a few songs, but I've always pretty uch been the lead singer of the band. KZ. ou sang on the Streets f Fire soundtrack. ou replaced Rosanne ash at one point. MM: h gosh! Streets f Fire (laughs). That was soething I choose to forget I ean, no offense. It's a good song but aybe I' being a little too candid about it It was a good experience because it was e and Jiy in a trial period. It was like, here's a girl singer, right? Girl singers are usually pretty freaked out. Let e see if this one is even workable. KZ: Do you have any eories of the Lone Justice's early club scene days in Los Angeles? MM: It's not really eory to e because live in LA and I still hang out with all those people. go to all their gigs and y I boyfriend is in a band that plays all over LA. It's not like now we're on fire and we can't go and play clubs in LA. It's not really a eory, it's reality. NTEBK by Eric Norberg TAKE TW f all the topics covered in seven years of coluns in the Gavin Report the one that has excited the ost polarized coents, believe it or not, have been the two on "Keeping the Staff Healthy," with soe tips I've learned over the years about preventing staff colds, treating the throat when it's in bad shape, etc. Soe people have found these coluns very helpful, and others have accused e of practicing edicine without a license! Perhaps one day there will be enough deand to venture forth on that topic again for those who haven't seen those coluns before. In the eantie, perhaps this colun has the potential of generating the sae sort of coents. I have noticed that Progra Directors, especially in the saller arkets, tend to work a lot of hours and wear a lot of hats!! I was one of the, and I have never stopped keeping the long hours and doing a lot of different stuff. It can wear you down a bit ne of the things that isn't talked about uch is that after a while -as you cruise through your 30's and head into the 40's and beyond -it sees that perhaps the ind used to work a little better than it does now. There are days when it feels like you have a bowl of oateal for a brain, and days when you wished you'd stayed in bed. iting as y sources a PhD in nutrition, a pharacist, and y own experience, I will recoend two products to you if you need a little help to stay on your ental toes (besides coffee, of course). When I first started taking Lecithin capsules alost a decade ago, the practice was regarded as worthless by the edical profession, but I did notice that with three capsules a day (19 grain, or 1200 g, size) y ind seeed to work a bit faster and better, so I kept it up. Nowadays Lecithin is acquiring soe grudging respectability in edicine, because studies tend to support y experience. There is a great deal of Lecithin in the brain anyway; taking at least three capsules a day sees to help. These capsules are quite inexpensive and are available in all drug stores and ost superarkets. Recently, a pharacist called y attention to an aino acid that he felt lived up to its report of iproved brain function and new overall vitality. I've tried it, and without experiencing anything in particular that one could label an effect, I do see to be realizing these benefits, so I recoend it to you if you'd like to try it and see what you think for yourself. It's called L- Tyrosine. This is a bit ore expensive, and not as readily available, but as I say, the results see to justify the effort and expense. Take three tablets a day first thing in the orning on an epty stoach. Both Lecithin and L- Tyrosine are natural substances, and are nontoxic. Their use is harless.
