Product Manual QD00-US US to Communications Converter Description The QD00-US is a US to converter used to allow asys Controls controllers to communicate with a PC. Material List QD00-US communication converter RJ phone (6 conductor) cord, 3' length 0 Ω termination resistors ( included, onboard) US cable ( Male to Male), 6' length Contents Description Material List... General Use... Setup... US Cable Use... QD00-US/ Phone Cord Setup.... QD00-US/ Wired Network Setup... Controller Network Wiring & Setup... 3 Troubleshooting Communications...5 General Use The QD00-US is used to connect a PC to a network with up to 4000' of wire and up to 64 thermostats and/or controllers. Thermostats and controllers will be referred to as controllers throughout the rest of this document. For networks longer than 4000' or larger than 64 controllers, one or more / serial repeaters (QD0a) will be needed. There are two ways to use the QD00-US to establish communications between a PC and one or more controllers.. Using the six conductor cord (included with the QD00-US) to plug directly into a controller. NOTE: Plugging into one controller on a network gives access to the whole network. This should be only used as a temporary connection, not a permanent one.. Connecting the network (one or more controllers) directly to the terminal block on the QD00-US. Setup ll of the controller addresses on the network must be unique. There is also another jumper selection labeled "0 Ω". Placing a jumper here installs a 0 Ω terminating resistor at the QD00-US. See Wiring and Setup for a complete discussion on the use of terminating resistors. US Cable Use Plug the male end of the US cable into the US port on the QD00 US. Plug the male end of the cable into any available US port on your PC, a QD040, or a QD00. NOTE: You may need a driver for the QD00-US to work with your PC. This driver is included with the Insight software which can be downloaded from the asys Controls website ( 800 LUR LNE MIDDLETON, WI 5356 (800) FX (608)
QD00-US/ Phone Cord Setup Plug one end of the RJ cable (included with the QD00-US) into the phone jack on any controller, and plug the other end of the cable to the port on the QD00-US. See Figure. QD00-US/ Wired Network Setup Connect the "", "", and "" wires from the network to the terminals labeled "", "", and "" on the QD00-US. If you only have wires available, you can just use the "" and "" terminals on the QD00 US. NOTE: DO NOT use the shield drain wire as the "" wire. Figure. Communications with a stand-alone thermostat. QD00-US US / US US 0 RJ- cable provided. Connects port on QD00-US to the phone jack on any controller. US cable provided. Connects US port on QD00-US to any US port on your local PC. NOTE: The QD00-US is powered from the US connection. No additional power connection is needed. 800 LUR LNE MIDDLETON, WI 5356 (800) FX (608)
Controller Network Wiring & Setup Use WG, twisted shielded triple conductor cable for network wiring. Network wiring should start at one controller and go to the next and then go to the next, and so on until the final controller is reached. Wiring is such that all "" wires are connected to "" wires, all "" wires are connected to "" wires, and all "" wires are connected to "" wires. 0 Ω terminating resistor should be placed at each of the two ends of the network directly across the "" and "" wires. Try and keep stubs less than 50'. If the QD00-US will be at one end of the network, you can use its built-in 0 Ω terminating resistor by placing a jumper on " 0 Ω", or one can be hard wired across the "" and "" terminals at the QD00 US. NOTE: maximum of terminating resistors can be used. See Figure. If the QD00 will be in the middle of the network, or if an external terminating (also referred to as balancing ) resistor is used, the jumper on " 0 Ω" must be removed. See Figure 3. Figure. Communications with a network of thermostats/controllers, QD00-US at end of network. QD00-US US / US US 0ν 0 Ohms 0 Ohms US cable provided. Connects US port on QD00-US to any US port on your local PC. Shielded, twisted triple conductor communications wiring with one end earth grounded. (0 Ω balancing resistors provided.) NOTE: The QD00-US is powered from the US connection. No additional power connection is needed. NOTE: If using more than 64 controllers or if wire run length exceeds 4000 ft., a serial repeater (QD0a) must be used to boost the signal. NOTE: Each controller must be assigned a unique address. 800 LUR LNE MIDDLETON, WI 5356 (800) FX (608)
On small networks, you may find you do not need any terminating resistors. If a terminating resistor is not needed, the jumper on " 0 Ω" should be removed. Finally, connect one end (ideally the furthest end from the QD00-US) of the shield wire of the network wiring to earth ground. Note: In the middle of the network, all network wiring shields should be twisted together and taped off to prevent accidental grounding. More than one ground on the network wiring can result in communication failure. Figure 3. Communications with a network of thermostats/controllers, QD00-US in middle of network. QD00-US US / US US 0 0 Ohms 0 Ohms US cable provided.
Troubleshooting Communications Once a network is wired, you should test communications with all controllers on the network. This can be done using the Insight software. Find out which controllers communicate and which ones don't. Go to the controllers that don't communicate and verify that the "", "", and "" wires are not switched. Verify the controller has the correct, unique address and its baud rate is correct as well. One of these three issues is usually the problem. If you are still having trouble with communications, attempt to read the controller (monitoring or programming tabs) and watch the QD00-US's (yellow) and US (green) LEDs. The "US" (green) LED blinks when communication is coming into the "US" port from the PC. The "" (yellow) LED blinks when communication is coming into the "" terminal block from a controller. See the chart below for help. IF The or US LEDs never light. Green LED blinks, Yellow LED is always off. If this happens, the computer is sending, but the controller is not responding. oth green and yellow LEDs will blink. oth the computer and the controller are responding, but you still receive communication errors. THEN Check that the QD00-US has power. The Power LED should be lit. Check that you have chosen the correct COM (Serial) port for the computer in Insight software. Check that the baud rate set on the computer and controller(s) are all set the same. Verify controller address. Check the network wiring. Make sure that communication wiring runs are at least 5' away from fluorescent lights, motors, etc. Make sure that all controllers on the network have a unique address. Yellow LED is always on. This is typically a problem with wiring. Make sure that the "", "", and "" wires are not switched or shorted. Make sure that there is no stray voltage on the "" and "" wires. "" to "" should measure between VDC and 4 VDC. "" to "" should measure 0 VC. "" to "" should measure between 0 VDC and VDC. "" to "" should measure between VDC and 5 VDC. "" to "" and "" to "" should measure 0 VC. "" to "Shield" and "" to "Shield" should measure 0 VC and 0 VDC. Communication errors/problems. On smaller networks, try removing one of the two terminating resistors. C LUR LNE MIDDLETON, WI 5356 (800) FX (608) Rev:08
