3 La Malinette is a pedagogical tool under free license to discover and learn to build interactive systems. Inside, there are a software and electronic devices, an Arduino board and a set of sensors and actuators. This project is developped by the Reso-nance numérique collective since It is used in education (schools, colleges, faculties), and also as a tool to make artistic pieces. The learning way is experimental, transdisciplinary and fun. 4 Installation Install the Pure Data Extended software Download and uncompress the Malinette folder Install the Arduino software Plug the Arduino board, then open the Arduino software. Select Leonardo board from Tools > Boards and the Serial Port. Open the StandardFirmata example from Files > Examples > Firmata, and upload it into the board. It allows you to show all objects with a right clic and some little visuals effects. To install it, go on Edit > Preferences menu from Pd-extended, add (New) the path to the folder./other/tclplugins and restart Pure Data.

5 Interface? HELP Two windows are opened : the menu and the NEW project. Don t close MALINETTE-en.pd.? HELP Getting started with Pure Data and the Malinette PATCHS EXAMPLES PROJECTS PATCHS Patchs is the name for Pure Data files. Here are the examples files to see and copy. Save (Edit > Save as) and find your patchs in the projects folder. OBJECTS IN NUMBERS AUDIO VIDEO OUT AUDIO VU GAIN 1 VOL pd record RECORD CHOOSE FILE ARDUINO CHECK DEVICES MAIN CPU:5% VIDEO WIDTH 320 HEIGHT 240 PRESETS OPTIONS AUDIO VIDEO xp 3 PORT TEST:13 OBJECTS Objects are organized by family. Look at their descriptions in./docs/overview.html AUDIO Check this box to switch on and off the sound. Control le master level with the slider. All [audio-out] objects are routed through this master. VIDEO Check this box to show or hide the video window, handled here by GEM a graphical library for Pure Data. The presets change the size of the window and with the options you can go further. RECORD Choose a file, select which media to record (audio and/or vidéo) and check this box. ARDUINO The board is recognized automatically. If not, you have to clic on «CHECK DEVICES» which display of the serial ports availables into the Pure Data console. Write the right port avec check the box. Test it with the «TEST:13» button to blink the LED of the Arduino board.

6 Pure Data Pure Data is graphical programming language for multimedia projects. We create a programm by connecting boxes together, it is called a patch. The Malinette software is a collection of patch that s why it is useful to understand the basics of Pure Data. There are two modes in Pure Data. The edition mode and the action mode. You can switch between them with the Edit > mode menu or with this short key : Ctrl + e (Cmd + e sur Mac) EDITION MODE to create object, connect, move, etc. Create object Select Duplicate Connect Disconnect ACTION MODE to trigger events, change numbers, draw, etc. Trigger Change Graphical objects Write symbols Draw a number inside a array

7 Help All objects have their helps : Right clic > Help on objects. Elements delay 0 symbol object du texte... message number symbol comment Inputs/Outputs Objects have inputs on the top and outputs on the bottom. We connect them by clicking, drag & drop to the input of the next object. input > output > delay < cold input Arguments The arguments are used on some objects to initialize them. It is updated by the number above, in the number box. Here, we change the transparency (alpha) of an image or video.

12 Projet #1 GRAPHITE CONTROL! This example use the graphite material of a stencil lik e a controller. More the stencil is far from the electrode connected to the paper, more the resistance is big. 14 Projet #2 STROBOSCOPE! Here, we build a stroboscope light, where the speed change by a sequencer in the Malinette. We use a relay to switch on and off the light. 1 A B C D E 5 F G H I J A B C D E F G H I J NEUTRAL PHASE 230V Plug (we don t use the ground)

15 PATCH seq-taptempo ms 120 We use the seq-taptempo object to change the speed This toggle object converts bang in 0 and none digital pwm servo rst Check the 13 digital output of the arduino-out object to control the 13 output. The digital mode has two states : 0 and 1 to switch off (0V) and on (5V). Output 13 5V GND Please be careful! A 230V circuit is dangerous! Use a halogen light which support those king of electric triggers. Don t use Neon light.
