Welcome to the M2M Group s new monthly newsletter. I hope you find it interesting and will consider sharing it with everyone that fosters an interest in radio, electronics and technology. Please feel free to forward articles, radio experiences, results of technical tinkering and lots of pictures of ham shacks, antennas, projects and Amateur Radio events. Even better is including photos of yourself enjoying all that our hobby has to offer. Be sure to include a brief description of the event. 3 Page 3 December 11, 2017 Program Where: MC Career Center Room W Liberty St., Medina OH :30pm One of the M2M Group s founders, Ken Koyan K8TV, will present RF Magic during the December meeting. Ken will explore the effects of, RF behavior with various coax lengths, different impedances, cavities, coax stubs, VSWR changes and effects caused by mismatches. He explains, There are lots of misconceptions and measurement issues in the ham world. The less technical will learn a lot, even the seasoned guys may be surprised at how things really work! As posted on QRZ.com, Ken has been a "Ham" since He has enjoyed a lot of aspects of the hobby over the years and enjoys building and tinkering, but still finds time to operate AM on some band, most days, and also CW and even SSB now and then. Even after all these years propagation variations still can amaze him, You just never know how the bands will be and who might be at the other end of a path. He goes on to state that he, started on CW and probably will end there! Under his leadership the club has maintained a strong, positive presence in Medina County. We are thankful that he will continue helping on an ad hoc basis. My dad and uncle got me interested in electronics and shortwave radio when I was 12 years old. I learned about amateur radio while shortwave listening from I lost interest for a while when I went to college then started working in radio communications in I put the hobby on hold for 28 years while I pursued my career in electronics and raised a family. What modes of operation do you like best? (VOIP, digital, repeaters, CW, etc.) CW, RTTY, SSB HF Operation, DX Chasing, Some Contesting Awards, activities, nets: Finished in top ten scoring, USA 100 Watt class, ARRL 160 Meter Contest, in last two years. 9 Band DXCC (10-160) 329 Countries Worked & Confirmed Current projects? 5 Page 5 Dot Radio Top-Level Domain Availability The top-level domain (TLD) name ".radio" is now available to the radio industry and Amateur Radio enthusiasts, and is reserved for individuals and companies with active interest in the radio sector. The.radio TLD can be used for web and e- mail addresses and will be managed by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) with support from other world broadcasting unions. The cost for individual radio amateurs is about $30, including tax. EBU's.radio TLD Manager Alain Artero suggested that those in the radio community may want to consider securing the integrity of their web presence by requesting appropriate.radio domains "for defensive reasons, initially." "The TLD will be focused on content and matters specific to radio, and we want to prevent speculation and cybersquatting in this TLD; therefore, this extension will rapidly become a high-value internet space for websites, mail systems, and other internet applications," he continued. Starting in November 2017, first come, first served rules will apply, although eligibility requirements remain the same. For more information, visit Fox Hunt Fun The M2M Foxhunt that took place October 14 th was well received by our members. So, plans are underway to schedule more M2M transmitter hunts in Since Amy Panchumarti K8ETL was first to find the fox, she won the right to hide the transmitter somewhere in Medina County when the weather breaks after winter. That will give all of you a cozy break in front of the fireplace to read up on foxhunting techniques. Building or buying or adapting a suitable antenna and receiver will make you forget about the cold and snow, and when the first bird of spring arrives you will be able to try out your skill to outfox the fox! It is a great way to enjoy outdoors, explore some hidden areas of the county and share the experience with the best people in the world fellow hams and other like-minded folk. We ll publish the 2018 M2M Fox Hunt Schedule as soon as it is completed, and will list other nearby clubs hunts as well. Stay tuned. 6 page 6 Medina County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security Per their website, The Medina County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security is a local government agency that provides support and coordination assistance to first responders for county-wide emergency/disaster planning, education, warning, response and recovery activities. The primary responsibility of Medina County EMA is to better prepare Medina County for natural, man-made or technological disasters, hazards or acts of terrorism. The Medina Two Meter Group is proud of the ARES volunteers known as MECARS that comprise the Communications Unit of the Medina County EMA.
