The President s Corner With the close of summer and the cooler and cold weather on the way it seems that at this time of the year we start turning our thoughts to our radios. This is a good time to renew old friendships and make new one on the radio. Halloween is over and there was a very good turnout for Hoot Owl, with 14 HAMs participating. Even though we had some rain it didn't seem to slow or hinder the little monsters, goblins, princess, super heroes or any others out there. There were a couple of radios that went out of service for a short time but with a prayer and good luck they were fixed and put back in service. Remember that our November meeting we will be having our elections for next year's officers and discussing our upcoming Christmas party each is on December 19. Also don't forget our Sunday night net at 8 pm so tune in and let us know how everything is going for you and share any upcoming plans or projects you may have. 73 s Tom Howe KE7TEG Announcements Northwestern Division Scholarship Fund For more information on the Scholarship or to make a contribution, go to or contact your Section Manager. 4 ARES Report by Dave - WD7K The 2014 Hoot Owl Patrol was another success. No lost children, unsafe bonfires, drunks, speeders, etc.. The ARES bus was parked at Yep Kanum Park (aka Colville City Park) for Net Control. We even had two trick or treaters come to the bus! The Hoot Owl Patrol is a lot of fun, but it also qualifies as an ARES training exercise. A report gets filed with the state that lists the volunteers, miles traveled, and hours spent. We had 14 people involved who drove a total of 217 miles and spent 57.3 hours. Colville s City Police Chief Bob Meshishnek stopped by the bus a couple of times over the course of the evening but was pretty good at evading the camera. He thanked us several times for what we do every Halloween. Thanks to Bill-KD7MMU, Bruce-KC7H, Tracie-KF7DRA, Tommy-KE7TEG, Gimmie-AL7LB, Cynthia-WW7CA, Bert- N7YPP, Kris-KB7TWC, George-W7WBN and [his son], Jeff-K7JSM, Michael-KF7SYS, and Bert-KE7MAK. Special thanks to David-KF7QEN for stepping up to the Net Control hot seat! ARES Net is every Sunday at 7:45pm local. The Stevens County ARES net can be heard on the repeater located SW of Colville on Monumental Mountain and, when linked, the repeater (which has a PL tone of 77.0) located NW of Spokane on Lookout Point. The Washington State Emergency Net (WSEN) anyone with HF privileges is welcome (encouraged) to check in when Stevens County is called. Saturdays at 0900 on 3985 khz and on Mondays at 1830 also on 3985 khz. 7 ARRL Centennial QSO Party 2014 The ARRL Centennial QSO Party is a year-long operating event that celebrates hams making contacts. The Centennial QSO Party is made-up of two main activities: (1) W1AW operating portable in each state and most territories, and (2) The Centennial Points Challenge which is the accumulation of points from qualifying contacts made throughout This last week November 5-11 (UTC) was the second Washington State time to host the portable operation as W1AW/7. I was fortunate in that I was invited to operate my station as W1AW/7 during this time. Jim - W7JWT joined me for an afternoon of operating on 20m. Band conditions were up and down throughout the day but together we totaled 760 QSO's. The week's total for my station was 1,228 QSO's. The stats for the entire State of Washington W1AW/7 operation, was 37 operating stations, 88 operators, and 45,542 QSO's. All in all, fun was had by all who participated. For more information on the 2014 ARRL Centennial QSO Party visit this website: Dave - WD7K Dave WD7K and Jim W7JWT work hard to make 760 QSO s. Way to go guys! Nice looking station Dave. 7

PARC Sunday Night Net PARC Net Simplex Test November 23 rd 2014 In an emergency, if the PARC 2-Meter repeater is disabled, members must communicate by Simplex Mode. Given the relative short range of 2-Meters, and natural barriers in the area, members/visitors may not be able to communicate throughout the county. Because the present Net Control Operators reside north and south of Colville, a few tests will be conducted to determine what locations are able to communicate directly or by relay. Periodically, in conjunction with the Sunday Night Net: At the part where we conduct the roll call everyone (members and visitors) will shift their gear to the Simplex Mode and set up on mc. The assigned Net Control Operator will conduct the roll call and the remaining net procedures on the new frequency. Another Net Control Operator will remain on mc to take the roll for members/visitors who cannot make contact on Simplex. Your help and cooperation in conducting these tests will be greatly appreciated. The more folks we can get to check in the better the data collected. When completed, the results will be published here. The first of these tests will be conducted next Sunday, November 23 rd. If there are any questions please contact George, W7WBN, either on or at audax@gotsky.com Thank You George W7WGN Sunday Night Net Manager 8

The Radio Corner by Jim W7JWT The Zenith Model 8G005Y Trans-Oceanic Last month was the introduction of the first Zenith Trans- Oceanic, the 7G605 Clipper. The speaker cloth started as a clipper ship and ended with a B-17 bomber. Well we won the war, and now was the time to really sell some radios to the public. Actually the initial design for the 1946 TO started in the spring of Radio was really coming into its own, and the war over seas just increased the public interest in the news. A top shelf radio had to work well and be something special to look at too. From a looks standpoint the designers favored the colors of black or dark brown with bright gold trim for the Zenith line. This color scheme was used throughout the1940s and most of the1950s, and related at least in part to the Zenith motto of the era, The Royalty of Radio. The design theme for most of the post war line involved the use of concentric semi-circles and other related forms. This late Art Deco design theme is found throughout the Zenith line for the remainder of the tube era. The upwardly rotating front door also newly introduced remained a signature feature of Zenith Trans-Oceanic from 1946 until the demise of the line in The extensive use of war-developed plastics was adopted throughout the radio industry. The Black Stag cabinet covering was one of the first uses of what would become known as vinyl-covered fabrics. The electronics design also had to include innovation. Bringing out a post-war radio in a post-war cabinet was a strategy which most manufactures used to meet the immediate post-war surge of demand in the civilian radio market but not for Zenith. Although the 8G005Y and its pre-war ancestor, the 7G605 Clipper, share the basic super heterodyne circuit design and even have somewhat similar tube complements, the 8G005Y cannot be considered a pre-war radio in a post-war cabinet. While maintaining the pre-war loktal-type tubes, the 8G005Y circuit design was a more modern design with several times the number of components dedicated to improvements of selectivity, sensitivity and audio quality than was the case in its ancestor the Clipper. (If you remember, the Clipper was based on an AM radio design that was modified to pick up shortwave in addition). The 8G005Y was a much better radio with more components deployed in a more sophisticated manner. It was also the most electronically complex tube-type Trans-Oceanic ever produced. The post-war Trans-Oceanic was teased with a non-specific Back Soon-Better than Ever magazine ad in November The 8G005Y was actually introduced in April 1946, with a massive spring ad blitz in major national magazines. A typical advertisement was a full page ad in Better Homes and Gardens, May 1946, with the headline: NEW SUPER POWER TRANS-OCEANIC PORTABLE RADIO. The 8G005Y initially sold for $120. These early advertisements also introduced companion Radios : the new Zenith Universal Portable and the new Zenith Global. Electronically, the 6G001 Universal was one of the finest portable AM radios offered in the post-war market. Its circuits employed six tubes rather than the four or five tubes then common in portables and small table models. It was, and is, an excellent AM radio producing very mellow audio, thanks to its comparatively large cabinet / sound box. The Global was the Universal with the addition of a shortwave band of MHz. The Global appeared in only the earliest print advertisements in the spring of It was produced in very low numbers and is quite rare today. In addition, another very rare radio was the 6G001Y Universal built with the cabinet made entirely from aluminum formed to emulate the wooden cabinet used on all other versions. It is entirely speculation, but this unusual model was probably an experiment to determine the economics of shifting from wood to aluminum cabinets on Zenith portables. Commander McDonald wrote 10

several internal memoranda, even before World War II, urging Zenith engineers to experiment with aluminum, then considered a marvelous new material. This article was based on info obtained from the book, The Zenith Trans-Oceanic, The Royalty of Radios, by John H. Bryant and Harold N. Cones. See you next month. Happy Thanksgiving! CUL & 73s from Jim W7JWT I have not restored this one, but it was purchased in excellent shape, (I think). It was the only TO to have a front door hiding a radio station frequency listing and log book for the listener. At that time, logging AM radio and short wave DX was a big deal. Listeners were introduced to skip. 11

The heating element device was an external short wave antenna that could be stuck to car / train windows. (The AM antenna mounted on the front flip up panel could also be mounted externally). The portable battery was very heavy. It included an A battery for tube filaments and a B battery for tube plate voltages. 12

This is the AM only Universal. This is the Global with the short wave band. You can see the additional band switch and tone switch on the front, along with the short wave antenna in the back. Here are close-ups of the insides - very similar. 13
