INTRODUCTION This document describes the functionality of the systems Remocean Ship Safety and Remocean OSD and the integration of their simulated version on the bridge of a ship. The description covers both the hardware and the software and provides all the key elements to enable a simple and efficient installation on a ship bridge simulator. 1. WAVE RADAR AND OSD OVERVIEW X-band radars detect the echo of an electromagnetic wave signal from an obstacle or from ships (target). The signals reflected by the sea surface are usually considered background noise (or clutter) and filtered away in order to highlight the target position. Wave radars, applying mathematical algorithms to the clutter signal, can estimate parameters that can describe the sea state, surface currents field. The analysis of the X-band radar data allows, moreover, to detect the presence of small and slow targets on the sea surface due to the fact that they reflect, differently from the sea, the signal transmitted by the radar. This kind of information can be acquired both on vessels, using the on board radar, and on fixed locations (coastal or offshore platform). 2. SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE The system architecture is very easy and flexible it is composed by: Remocean Box Remocean Radar Interface The figure above shows a schematic representation of the hardware configuration Schematic System Architecture The Remocean Box is an high performance industrial controller, designed to work in nonconventional environments, which is connected to the radar signals acquisition interface. The Radar Interface is a flexible Radar Video to LAN board that can capture radar video from a large range of radar transceivers. Remocean S.p.A. Page 3 of 9
2.1. REMOCEAN SHIP SAFETY SYSTEM Ship Safety is one of remocean s applications based on the innovative wave radar algorithm. It represents an integrated solution that increases vessel safety thanks to the analysis of the coming waves and surface currents. The application provides real time information up to a range of 3 nautical miles from the radar, relative to: Sea State: graphical and textual representation of direction, length and period of primary and secondary dominant waves; significant wave height; average values for direction spread, period and length; Surface currents: average values for direction and speed; Directional Spectrum: 2D representation of waves in the frequency domain; Wave Motion: Space-Time Reconstruction of waves. The following table shows accuracy information for each system s output1. TABLE I ACCURACY INFORMATION OF THE REMOCEAN OUTPUTS Wave and Current Accuracy Range Resolution parameters Significant Wave height (Hs) +/- 10% m 0.1 m Peak direction +/ Average cycle +/- 0.5 s 3-30s 0.1 s Peak wave length +/- 10% m 1m Current speed +/- 0.1 m/s 0-30 m/s 0.02 m/s Current direction +/ Wave measurement space resolution Max. effective wave measurement value > 3Km < 50m All products are provided in real time by the Remocean Ship Safety system and are displayed in a user interface (GUI) interactive, simple and completely customizable. The next figure shows an example of the naval GUI that shows the parameters of sea and surface currents (panels on the sides) and the directional spectrum image (center). 1 The min threshold for wind speed is 3 m/s. 5 Ship Safety User Interface The following picture shows the GUI where to place directional spectrum shows the space-time reconstruction of the waves provided by the system. This image can be displayed with different levels of transparency (modifiable via a slider) superimposed on the directional spectrum in order to provide all the information on one panel if requested by the user. 6 Optional Features: Enhanced Ship Safety System This application was made to respond to the advice given on the IMO document 'Revised Guidance To The Master For Avoiding Dangerous Situations in Adverse Weather Conditions And Sea Msc.1/Circ January 2007' which requires regular monitoring of the waves in order to take any action necessary to prevent danger to navigation. The document refers, in particular, to the following phenomena: Hazardous Surf-riding and broaching-to, synchronous rolling motion and Parametric roll motions. Adverse weather conditions, for the purpose of the following guidelines, include wind induced waves or heavy swell. Some combinations of wave length and wave height under certain operation conditions may lead to dangerous situations for ships complying with the IS Code. However, description of adverse weather conditions below shall not preclude a ship master from taking reasonable action in less severe conditions if it appears necessary. (extracted from the IMO document). The Vessel Motions feature, starting from the knowledge of the vessel geometry and the sea state measure, makes it possible to predict the formation of these phenomena and suggest to the commander maneuvers to avoid critical motion conditions. The picture below shows the GUI of the Enhanced Ship Safety System installed on board a Cruise Italian Ship. The colored lines present in the GUI represent the motion critical states of the ship. Remocean Ship Safety System GUI with the Vessel Motion feature (colored lines) installed on a Cruise Vessel. 3. SMALL AND SLOW TARGET DETECTION This session is devoted to describe the new Remocean integrated system for the wave monitoring and. An advanced real-time signal processing, is able to detect the presence of one (or several) small and slow target by analyzing the reflected microwave radiation on the radar sweep image. Proprietary pattern analysis algorithms allow to Remocean S.p.A. Page 6 of 9
drastically reduce false alarms events. This feature is integrated with the System for the wave and currents monitoring. In the following a schematic description of the integrated system: Small (and still) Target Detection mode: o Manual: user can draw a polygonal area that the system will investigate continuously; o Full Auto: the system automatically investigates all the radar sweep; Target info provided by the system: o Latitude/Longitude; o Dimension: automated calculation of the target area ; o Distance from radar; o UTC, Range/Bearing, Speed/Course, Latitude/Longitude (on board); AIS Data Tracking; Target Data Storage: o RAW Images and/or Compressed Formats and/or ESRI shape file; o UTC, Range/Bearing, Speed/Course, Latitude/Longitude (on board); o Wind and/or external data source data; The following image shows the interface of the Integrated System for small and slow target detection and for Wave and current monitoring installed in the port of Giglio Island during the removal of the Costa Concordia Ship wreck. Integrated GUI Remocean S.p.A. Page 7 of 9
The figure shows the pre-processed radar image (left) befor to apply the Small and Slow Target Detection Algorithms. The right side of the GUI shows the real time Wave Directional Spectrum (top) and the numerical info of the waves and small target detected by the system. The next figure shows the GUI shortly before the application of the Small Target Detection system. The pre-processing procedure allows to highlight the presence of small and slow targets. Integrated GUI Next figure shows the GUI with the Detected Targets. The system upgrades the detection with a frequency of about 3-5 seconds (depending on the numbers of detected targets). In this case the system detected 24 still and moving targets. The user may select the maximum dimension of the target that wants to detect. The system provides, at the same time, the wave and currents information, see right column of the figure. Targets information are shown (for each target) in the Extention data field in terms of: - extention of the target (m^2) - latitude and longitude of the target - distance of the target from the radar. Remocean S.p.A. Page 8 of 9
Integrated GUI: several (24) targets detected (red circles) with the wave and current information (right column). Target info are shown in the extention data field. Next Figure shows the same previous GUI but with a zoom of the radar image with detect target. Integrated GUI Remocean S.p.A. Page 9 of 9
