100 Years Centennial Commemoration It s Here! The Centennial of the San Antonio Radio Club (SARC) is here! So how do we know that SARC started in The answer is pretty simple. ARRL went through there records a lot of years ago and issued SARC a Certificate of Affiliation as of January 2, Hence, SARC was organized in 1919 and requested affiliation that was granted the following January. How do we know that ARRL issued this Certificate of Affiliation a lot of years ago? The paper the Certificate of Affiliation is on is very yellowed with age. A copy of the Certificate of Affiliation is included in this article. Tom O Brien, AB5XZ, Chairperson, Centennial Committee and his committee members have created a banner for us to use at various events throughout the year. It s unveiling will be at the January 10, 2018 General Membership Meeting. It s second appearance will be at the Centennial Radio Fiesta After that expect to see it at the SAMSAT on-air events and at Field Day as a minimum. The source artwork follows: The SARC Centennial Banner 3

Tom AB5XS has ordered Centennial Commemorative coins, pins, and patches. All three feature the Centennial Logo. The patches are already on hand. The coins and pins have been on order for 2-3 weeks and are expected before Centennial Radio Fiesta There will be a Centennial Commemoration table at the Centennial Radio Fiesta 2019 that will be continually manned. The table will be in front of the Centennial Commemoration Banner. The Radio Fiesta Committee is still working the table layout for everyone, so it is not yet known where exactly at the Centennial Commemoration table will be. Proof Copy of SARC s Centennial Patch Only 200 coins, 200 pins, and 200 patches were ordered. Again, the coins, pins, and patches all feature the Centennial Logo. These are limited edition items. SARC does not plan to reorder. Once they are gone, they are gone. The Commemoration Committee is optimistic that everyone will like the design and want these items, but they do not know whether they will sell out at the Centennial Radio Fiesta 2019 or sometime later. If you are The prices are: Coin, roughly the size of a Silver Dollar Pin, for hat of lapel with butterfly clasp Patch, 3 for cap, jacket, or shirt $10 each $6 each $5 each The Signman of Baton Rouge, LA, has been given permission to make ID badges and ceramic coffee mugs with the SARC Centennial Logo. Whether The Signman will be able to gear up to do that at the Centennial Radio Fiesta 2019 is not yet clear, but make inquires of The Signman if you are interested. The Centennial Commemoration plan still calls for quarterly on-air events during Each event will be in the middle month of the quarter, February, May, August, and November. The details will be announced in QST and to the members, but it will be held for a set number of hours on a Saturday in each quarter. The work necessary to prepare for a final test of the radio facilities SARC plans to use at the San Antonio Museum of Science and Technology (SAMSAT) for the on air events has been completed. Joe Bruno, W5AUQ, will bring the trailer with beam antenna to SAMSAT on Saturday, January 19, 2019, for the conduct of final end to end testing with all components planned to be used in the quarterly on air events. All members are welcomed to participate in the testing. Tom, AB5XZ, wants to see historical articles published every month in the Bexar Wire during The inclusion of the ARRL Certificate of Affiliation is the down payment on sharing history with everyone about the 100 year organization called the San Antonio Radio Club. 4

Volunteer Examiners at Work Pat Knight, AD5BR, Chairperson, Volunteer Examination Committee, and seven members of that committee conducted an amateur radio license examination session on Saturday, December 22, The test session started at 10:00 a. m. at the Great Northwest Library in their meeting type room as opposed to an open area in the library. This test session was open to the public although pre-registration was, as always, encouraged. There was a total of 14 people there to takes tests. A total of 7 people earned their Technician Class license, a total of 2 people earned their General Class license, and a total of 3 people earned their Amateur Extra license. One of the people earning their General Class license actually earned the Technician Class license just before taking the General Class examination, and one of the people earning their Amateur Extra license actually earned the General Class license just before taking the Amateur Extra examination. A lot of people gave themselves a Christmas present: a new or upgraded Amateur Radio license. Amateur Radio license testing underway at the Great Northwest Library on December 22, 2018 with the Volunteer Examiners (VEs) in the foreground and the candidates in the background The Red VE Team (left) handling Technician tests at the beginning and the Blue VE Team (right) handling all other tests at the beginning 6

RF Cabling On December 15, 2018, a team of five members from SARC lead by Joe Bruno, W5AUQ, and Rosendo Guzman, N5YGB, went to SAMSAT to do radio frequencey cabling, Category 5 cabling for the rotor for SARC s trailer mounted beam antenna, and the installation of a new dual band VHF/UHF antenna being donated by Rosendo, N5YGB. Harold Fleischer, AE5AS, Martin Herrera, N5WSU, and Rich Roudebush, N4DCA, were a part of the team. The end result, eight hours later, was a grounded RF cable between the SARC R5 Antenna and the SAMSAT ICOM 781, a grounded RF cable between the donated dual band VHF/UHF antenna, which was put up, the SAMSAT radio shack, Category 5 cabling in place for the rotor, and a RF cable for a SAMSAT receiver on airfield frequencies placed in the conduit, but not finished or connected (no SAMSAT antenna). Joe, W5AUQ, Rosendo, N5YGB, and Rich, N4DCA, went back on Dec 22, 2018 to put RJ45 connectors on the Category 5 cable after checking the pinout on the rotor control cable. Testing of the SARC trailer mounted beam antenna is planned by January 19, On Air The completion of the RF Cabling enabled SARC to actually test SAMSAT s ICOM 781, SARC R5 Antenna, and RF cabling end-to-end. The SARC team on site successfully transmitted and received radio communications. Hence, SARC and SAMSAT are on the air. In addition to the on-the-air Centennial Commemoration events, SARC members will be permitted and encouraged to use the radio shack at SAMSAT. If VHF/UHF operation is desired, the SARC member will need to bring a VHF/UHF radio to connect to the dual band VHF/UHF antenna. The RF cable is in place. Training at SAMSAT SAMSAT proposed a license for $0 to set the terms and conditions for use of their premises for license training. After coordination with David Finell, N7LRY, Chairperons, Educationa nd Training Committee, this was found to be acceptable for recommendation to the Board of Directors. The President and Chairman of the Board of Direcotrs for SARC completed signing it on December 22, It has been sent to SAMSAT for them to sign and then copy SARC. SARC believes that this will be a good facility. While on the west side, it is actually more centralized then other locations used in the last few years. The objective is one class per quarter in MOU In principle, SARC and SAMSAT have agreed to the execution of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between themeslvers. SAMSAT s first bullet point list was given to SARC on September 29, SARC returned a much more detailed draft counter position MOU on September 30, It has gone into a queue for SAMSAT s pro bono legal support on which to work. SAMSAT s highest priority is a legal document with the Port of San Antonio about the occupation of a much larger building next year. At this time, it is projected that the MOU will be completted sometime in The license for training covers one major use of SAMSAT s facilities for training. Verbal agreements, to be replaced eventually by the MOU, cover the use of SAMSAT for radio operations, especially SARC s on-the-air Centennial Commemoration events. 7

SARC Amateur Radio Club Table Sales List SARC has several donated items and excess items in its Field Day inventory that will be offered for sale at the Centennial Radio Fiesta 2019 on January 12, 2019 at the Club Sales Table. Generally, the marked price is the estimated value with ebay being a prime source for the value. Richard Elder, WB5ACN, was successful in selling many items last year, and SARC hopes that he sells out this year. If you are interested in an item on this list and wish to acquire it before Centennial Radio Fiesta 2019, contact Richard Elder, WB5ACN. If you have equipment that you would like to sell at the Club Sales Table for a 10% commission to SARC, you should bring your equipment before 9:00 a. m. on Saturday, January 12, 2019, with a listing similar to the one in this article for SARC equipment to guide Richard WB5ACN in making deals in line with your wishes.
