HMC Sets New Input IP3 Benchmark for MMIC Converters Hittite Microwave announces a new line of high dynamic range monolithic mixers that achieve up to +36dBm input IP3 for Cellular/PCS/3G infrastructure applications. The high linearity performance of these passive GaAs FET MMIC mixers represents the best available for any integrated circuit of its kind in the RFIC industry. In addition to very high dynamic range, the new UMTS CDMA and GSM based systems are demanding mixers that combine small size, lower cost and low external component count in a product line that will satisfy a wide range of RF/IF frequency plans for up or down conversion. The HMC399MS8, HMC4MS8 and HMC42MS8 meet those requirements by offering; the same standard plastic SMT 8 lead Mini Small Outline Package (MSOP) pin out, inherently lower cost IC construction and specifi cations to meet low or high side LO frequency plans respectively. Hittite has introduced a new web-based PLL Phase Noise Calculator tool written in Java. (continued from page 1) As seen in the Divider Screen shot example below, synthesizer designers may select an HMC product from a pull down menu for each of the pertinent PLL circuit elements (Divider, Phase Frequency Detector, VCO). Hittite recommends the user reference HMC Select HMC Products From Pull-down Menu product data sheets to help determine which part to choose based upon their frequency, phase noise, power output & functional requirements. Key parameters for each of the HMC parts in the pulldown menus have been entered into the PLL Calculator database. The user also has the option to enter their own key parameters by selecting "custom" from the pull down part number lists. Parameters for the Reference Oscillator and Loop Filter are entered by the user. Once all of the PLL circuit elements have been defi ned the user clicks "next" to see both the Reference Oscillator and VCO phase noise. Final adjustments can be made to the respective phase noise performance of each of these elements. Pressing the fi nal "Calculate" button yields the PLL Synthesizer Phase Noise Result screen shot shown at the right. The phase noise of each of the PLL elements is depicted along with the PLL synthesizer phase noise. The tool clearly shows which element contributes to the PLL noise fl oor versus the offset frequency.
