ESP LX Series Controllers Features & Operation Training Christen Funk, Product Manager Rain Bird Commercial Controllers & IQv2.0
Contact Information Christen Funk Commercial Controllers Product Manager Office:
ESP LX Series Controllers Exclusive features provide water, power and labor savings! ESP LXME Traditionally Wired ESP LXD 2 Wire Decoder
Review of market concerns Irrigation run time is too long Rewiring / reprogramming is time consuming Irrigation is running when prohibited Flow alarms falsely trigger during manual watering Broken pipes cost too much During high winds irrigation is cancelled Automatic Program Station Operation Manual Program Start Manual Station Start Test All Stations
Problem: Irrigation run time is too long! Solution: SimulStations Run multiple stations at once. LXME = 5 SimulStations LXD = 8 SimulStations Benefit More efficient water management! NOTE: Normally Closed Master Valves and stations with 2 valves can limit the number of active SimulStations. All 4 controller programs can be programmed to run simultaneously.
SimulStations Example Water source provides 100 GPM. Each zone operates between 35 to 50 GPM Set SimulStations to 2 Irrigation will never exceed the water source maximum Competition Assign stations to groups that run simultaneously Each station in a station group has the same run time No adjustability for individual zone watering needs
Problem: Rewiring / reprogramming is time consuming Solution: Station Priorities Configures the station order Non Irrigation High Medium Low Benefit Most important zones get watered first and no more rewiring / reprogramming NOTE: The Test All Stations will operate the stations sequentially for site walk through and testing.
Station Priorities Example A retail shopping center has customers present from 7am 11pm Set the parking lot stations as low priority Set other stations as high or medium priority Parking lot stations will run after other stations while customers are not present Competition Stations typically run in numerical sequence Operator must carefully consider the sequence when wiring If changes occur, you may need to rewire the whole controller
Problem: Irrigation is running when prohibited Solution: Water Window Programs only run during set times & irrigation is not cancelled outside of the water window Benefit Reduced liability NOTE: The landscape can still be manually watered when a program is paused without cancelling the paused program.
Program Water Windows Example Watering is prohibited from 7am 8pm Set any programs with sprays / rotors to a water window from 8pm 7am If more stations are programmed than can run in 11 hours, those stations will be paused and resume when the window reopens. Competition Only select controllers offer a Watering Window Those that do still run the station, but don t activate the valve You must manually account for any water lost
Problem: Flow alarms occur when using quick coupling valves Solution: MV Water Window Set days/times when maintenance will access the water supply without flow alarms or access to the controller Benefit Reduces maintenance costs, prevents water theft, and makes operation easier NOTE: The MV Water Window can be overlap the regular water window if manual watering is required at night (i.e. baseball fields requiring infield dust control between innings for nighttime league play).
MV Water Window Example Theme park needs to wash down side walks Set the days/times this watering will be allowed Set an additional manual flow rate Competition Only select controllers offer a MV Watering Window Most require the maintenance crew to power down the controller and manually bleed the MV Some suggest to program the controller for an unused station which eliminates the ability to properly detect low flow
Problem: Irrigation run time is too long! Solution: FloManager Maximizes the system efficiency by utilizing all available flow from the source Benefit Saves operating costs and reduces the total irrigation time NOTE: FloManager can be used with or without flow sensing (FloWatch ).
FloManager Example City park has a water source with 200 GPM Each zone operates between 5 75 GPM Enable FloManager and allow it to automatically select stations Competition Feature not offered User must manually configure the system If any programming changes, the entire configuration must be modified
Problem: Broken pipes cost too much money! Solution: FloWatch Recognizes High or Low flow and isolates the problem Benefit Saves money on water, reduces liability, and protects the pump NOTE: The FloWatch real time flow rate is displayed on the controller LCD in the auto dial position. The ESP LXMEF has 1 flow sensor input and the ESP LXD has 5.
FloWatch Example School has vandalism and broken mainlines Enable FloWatch and run a Learn Flow utility Configure the deviation %, settling time, and controller response Competition Some offer SEEF and SELF If so, they cannot be configured to the same level of detail
Problem: During high wind my irrigation is cancelled Solution: Weather Sensors Can be user configured to pause or prevent irrigation Benefit Saves money and protects the water needs of the landscape NOTE: The ESP LXME has 1 weather sensor input. The ESP LXD has 4. Stations can be configured to obey or ignore a weather sensor.
Weather Sensors Example City has high winds When the wind calms down, the landscape still needs watering Configure the sensor and set the stations to obey Competition Offer weather sensor capability but you cannot configure them to prevent or pause irrigation
Automatic Program Operation ESP LX Series Controllers select stations to operate for automatic program operation based on the following criteria: 1 Station Priority Non Irrigation High Medium Low 2 Station Run Time Longest run time to shortest run time (shortens overall watering window when operating multiple stations simultaneously) 3 Station Number 1 2 3, 4 Station Program Assignment 5 Other Criteria that effects which station is selected A B C D Program & Controller Max. SimulStations, FloManager FloZone/POC Max. Flow Rate, Weather Sensor State, Soak Time, Station and FloZone/Mainline Alarms, Program Water Window, Valid Decoder Address (LXD only)
Manual Program Operation ESP LX Series Controllers select stations to operate for manual program operation based on the following criteria: 1 Station Priority Non Irrigation High Medium Low 2 Station Run Time Longest run time to shortest run time (shortens overall watering window when operating multiple stations simultaneously) 3 Station Number 1 2 3, 4 Other Criteria that effects which station is selected Program & Controller Max. SimulStations, FloManager FloZone/POC Max. Flow Rate, Soak Time, Station and FloZone/Mainline Alarms, Valid Decoder Address (LXD only) Note: If multiple manual programs are started they will stack and run in the order the programs were manually started. The Weather Sensor status is ignored for manual operation.
Manual Station Operation ESP LX Series Controllers will operate stations in the following order for manual station operation: 1 Station Number Entry Order If multiple stations are manually started they will stack and run in the order entered. Note: The Weather Sensor status is ignored for manual operation.
Test All Stations Operation ESP LX Series Controllers will operate stations in the following sequence in Test All Stations: 1 Station Number 1 2 3, Note: The controller will run one station at a time in station number order. The Test All Stations run time is adjustable from 1 to 10 minutes. Only stations with run times are included in the Test All Stations operation. The Weather Sensor status is ignored for manual operation.
