07/05/2015 Euromed GNSSII/MEDUSA project, Tunis 12 TREGA, a training through research project The European Commission has signed a Contribution Agreement with the International Centre for Theoretical Physics to carry out the project TRaining on EGNOS-GNSS in Africa (TREGA) aimed to provide technical assistance, capacity building and provision and use of a test/simulation platform for the implementation of GNSS/EGNOS in Sub-Saharan Africa.
07/05/2015 Euromed GNSSII/MEDUSA project, Tunis 13 TREGA objectives To provide training to members of the EGNOS-Africa Joint Programme Office (JPO) candidates on different GNSS and EGNOS technology, service provision and applied legal and regulatory matters. To select, procure and use a simulation/testing platform as a preliminary backbone infrastructure for SBAS services in Sub-Saharan Africa. To train a core number of African professionals to face technical problems related to the conditions of Sub- Saharan Africa, making use of the simulation/testing platform (training through research).
07/05/2015 Euromed GNSSII/MEDUSA project, Tunis 14 TREGA achivements The intensive all-included training was concentrated in two sessions carried out at ICTP in Trieste during 2013 and The first session covered Space projects management and Legal/regulatory Aspects and started 15 July 2013 lasting 3 (three) weeks plus two Seminar days. The second session covered GNSS Systems and Applications and Service Provision, User Support and Promotion of EGNOS use in Africa. It started 21 January 2014, lasting 8 (eight) weeks, including stages of the trainees in European Institutions Performances analysis of a possible SBAS in sub Saharan Africa area (training through research activities)
07/05/2015 Euromed GNSSII/MEDUSA project, Tunis 15 Extensive technical training The Strategy proposed by ICTP and approved by EC and the Programme Steering Committee is being carried out as follows: Two African and an European professionals are receiving an extensive high-level technical training that takes into account the availability of the simulation/testing platform acquired by the Project (training through research) The two African professionals are becoming experts in several aspects of satellite navigation peculiar to the possible operation of a SBAS system in the African low latitude region. The European professional, should subsequently became the technical liaison between the JPO and other European experts. The trainees started their activities in October 2013 with a training on the use of the simulation/testing platform.

07/05/2015 Euromed GNSSII/MEDUSA project, Tunis 18 Summary of the results The results show that the system performances are seasonal dependent; in the solstice months the system performs better than in equinoctial months. The study indicates that a SBAS system can work in sub-saharan Africa region under certain limits. From the results obtained with stringent requirement of APV-I performances (Civil aviation) it is obvious that the system should give better performances for other applications with less stringent requirements like road transportation and agriculture.
07/05/2015 Euromed GNSSII/MEDUSA project, Tunis 19 Lessons learnt The results obtained are focused on the analysis of EGNOS performance in Sub-Saharan Africa in relation to the stringent requirements for use in Civil Aviation and the particular ionospheric conditions of the region. Further analyses are needed to assess Sub-Saharan EGNOS performance in relation to the requirements for uses in other domains such as maritime navigation, road transportation or agriculture. Both Nord and Sub-Saharan Africa SBAS initiatives and related countries would have a mutual benefit from a permanent cooperation and exchange.
07/05/2015 Euromed GNSSII/MEDUSA project, Tunis 20 ICTP vision in relation to the regional cooperation ICTP has a long tradition in promoting and supporting science and technology cooperation in developing countries and particularly in Africa. ICTP is open to all possible ways of collaboration to make a reality the effective use of satellite navigation in the continent. It offers its expertise and knowledge to contribute to such collaboration.
