Tokyo, Japan Contat author: María Rioja, rioja@oan.es Abstrat VLBI is unique, among the spae geodeti tehniques, in its ontribution to defining and maintaining the International Celestial Referene Frame, providing preise measurements of oordinates of extragalati radiosoures. The quest for inreasing auray of VLBI geodeti produts has lead to a deeper revision of all aspets that might introdue errors in the analysis. The departure of the observed soures from perfet, stable, ompat and ahromati elestial targets falls within this ategory. This paper is onerned with the impat of unaounted frequeny-dependent position shifts of soure ores in the analysis of dual-band S/X VLBI geodesy observations, and proposes a new method to measure them. The multi-frequeny phase transfer tehnique developed and demonstrated by Middelberg et al. (2005) inreases the high frequeny oherene times of VLBI observations, using the observations at a lower frequeny. Our proposed Soure/frequeny phase referening method endows it with astrometri appliations by adding a strategy to estimate the ionospheri ontributions. Here we report on the first suessful appliation to measure the ore shift of the quasar A at S and X-bands, and validate the results by omparison with those from standard phase referening tehniques. In this partiular ase, and in general in the m-wavelength regime, both methods are equivalent. Moreover the proposed method opens a new horizon with targets and fields suitable for high preision astrometri studies with VLBI, espeially at high frequenies where severe limitations imposed by the rapid flutuations in the troposphere prevent the use of standard phase referening tehniques. 1. Introdution Geodeti VLBI observations with a network of antennas at the Earth are affeted by the propagation medium, mainly the ionosphere and the troposphere. It is a basi pratie in geodesy to alibrate the ionospheri ontribution with simultaneous observations at S/X-bands (2.2GHz/8.4GHz, respetively). The ionospheri-free delay observables at X-band (τx ) are estimated from a ombination of observed delays (τ x, τ s ) at both bands: τx = ν2 x ν.τ x 2 x ν2 s ν2 s ν.τ x 2 s ν2 s and used to estimate the geodeti parameters. This approah works under the ritial assumption that the brightness distributions for eah soure are idential and are o-loated at both frequenies. In soures for whih the VLBI ore position is frequeny dependent the exat expression must inlude a 24-hour sinusoidal extra term whose amplitude depends on the magnitude of the shift of the position of the soure ore (ore shift): + ν2 s ν 2 x ν2 s τ geo sx 0.08 τgeo sx 1
2 where τ geo sx = D. θ sx, and θ sx orresponds to the ore shift between S and X-bands. The non-inlusion of this extra term introdues errors in the estimated ionosphere-free observables, and hene on the astrometri/geodeti produts from the analysis. For soures with non-varying (i.e. stable) ore shift θ sx, the unaounted extra term will propagate into an offset from the true X-band position, of magnitude (θ sx 0.08) in the diretion away from the S-band position [8]. Instead, unstable ore shifts an propagate also into unertainties in the estimated Earth orientation parameters (Engelhardt, these proeedings) in the multi-epoh geodeti analysis. Setion 2 is onerned with the origin, magnitude and geodeti impat of ore shifts; Setion 3 disusses the methods to measure them and Setion 4 presents the results of our proposed method. 2. Core shifts do exist Changes in the observed ore positions at different frequenies have been measured in several soures, for example, A [4],[9], 4C39.25 [1], 3C395 [2] and [7]. We propose to lassify the ore shifts in two groups depending on their origin: Astronomial ore shifts result from opaity effets in the jet. The unresolved ore of a ompat extragalati radio soure is believed to mark the loation where the optial depth to synhrotron self absorption 1. This position hanges with observing frequeny as R ore ν 1/kr, where k r depends on physial onditions in the jet. Core position shifts between S and X-bands of up to 1.5 milli-arseond (mas) are predited in [3]. Instrumental ore shifts result from onvolving the soure struture with different resolutions at different frequenies, ausing ore shifts of up to half the beam size at the lower frequeny. While the existene of soure ore shifts annot be predited, there are some lues whih alert one to them. Larger astronomial ore shifts are expeted for flat spetrum soures, where the power index k r 1; instrumental ore shifts an be expeted if the soure struture at the higher frequeny falls within a small fration of the beam size at the lower frequeny. Regardless of its nature, both ore shifts have an idential effet on the analysis of S/X geodesy data. Table 1 lists the propagation of plausible unaounted stable ore shifts into the analysis produts. 3 S band beam Figure 1. Hybrid map of A at S-band (left), and at X-band (right). The S-band beam superimposed on the X-band map illustrates the ase of struture blending effets from insuffiient resolution at lower frequenies, and therefore instrumental ore shifts. 3. Ways to measure frequeny-dependent ore shifts Using losure phase relations in the image proessing of VLBI data results in lak of absolute positional information in the hybrid maps. A rigorous alignment of maps at different frequenies, to measure frequeny-dependent shifts of the ore position, requires absolute astrometry observations, or standard phase-referening to a nearby (ahromati) radio soure. If astrometri observations are not feasible, a simpler but more impreise proedure for extended soures is to use an optially thin omponent to align maps at different frequenies, and lose epohs, and then estimate the hange in the position of the ore. Reently, Middelberg et al. [5, 6] proposed a new astrometri method that uses fast frequeny swithing observations of the target soure and relies on the transfer of alibration from the lower to the higher frequeny, after saling by the frequeny ratio. Their implementation proved to be a suessful strategy to alibrate the rapid flutuations of the troposphere, and hene extended the oherene time, in VLBA observations at 86 GHz, using interleaved sans at 15 GHz. This allowed the detetion of a very weak, 100 mjy soure. It also served to unveil the non-integer frequeny ratio problem in the appliation of this method. On the other hand, the unaounted dispersive ionospheri ontamination, whih was non-negligible even at these high frequenies, prevented them from making a proper astrometri measurement of the ore shift. We present an extension of this method, a so-alled Soure/frequeny phase referening whih omplements the fast frequeny swithing observing strategy with soure swithing, in order to alibrate the remaining dispersive ontaminating ontributions to the observables. Setion 4 desribes the first suessful astrometri measurement of a ore shift with this method, and Appendix A ontains a brief disussion of the basis of the method. 3
4 4. Soure/frequeny phase-referening Conventional VLBI at high frequenies is severely onstrained by the short oherene times imposed by the rapid flutuations in the troposphere. The non-dispersive nature of the tropospheri propagation makes it possible to use lower frequeny observations to alibrate higher, providing the swithing interval between frequenies mathes the temporal struture of the tropospheri flutuations (i.e. oherene time) at the lower frequeny. This is the basis of the multi-frequeny phase transfer tehnique developed and demonstrated by Middelberg et al. [5, 6]. Our Soure/frequeny phase referening method adds a soure swithing observing strategy, in addition to the fast frequeny swithing, to alibrate the dispersive ontributions in the phase transfer strategy. The nodding between soures has to math the temporal and spatial strutures of ionospheri propagation, and other non-dispersive terms, suh as instrumental based ontributions. A omplete desription of the method is given in Appendix A. We have suessfully applied this method to the astrometri analysis of dual-band S/X VLBA observations of the pair of quasars A and B, 33 apart, and measured the ore shift in the quasar A. The alibration transfer between frequenies involves multiplying the phases by the frequeny ratio. The alibration transfer between soures is done as in standard phase referening. The result is a Soure/frequeny phase referened map, shown in figure 2, whose offset from the enter is a diret measure of the ombined ore shifts in the two soures between the two frequenies. The interpretation in terms of individual ontributions from eah soure, assuming that shifts in the ore position in eah soure would our along the jet axis diretions, is simplified by the quasi-orthogonal strutures in this pair. The lose alignment of the ore shift offset with the A quasar soure axis suggests a dominant ontribution arising from this quasar; moreover, the quantitative agreement between the magnitude of the offset and the separation between the ore and seond omponent in the map of quasar A at X-band suggests the instrumental dominant nature of the offset. The results from a previous standard phase referening analysis [9] are in omplete agreement with those presented here, validating this new approah. 5. Conlusions Unaounted ore shifts in the analysis of dual frequeny VLBI geodesy observations propagate into offsets from the true X-band positions for the ICRF. We estimate deviations up to 200 µas and 50 µas, respetively, for S/X and X/K observations, assuming temporally stable ore shifts. Moreover, unstable ore shifts an also orrupt the estimated Earth orientation parameters. We have suessfully applied the Soure/frequeny phase referening method to the analysis of dual band S/X VLBA observations of the pair of quasars A and B, and measured a ore shift in quasar A of a. 800 µas. Our result is equivalent to, within the errors, to those obtained using standard phase referening tehniques [9]. As far as we know this is the first ase of suessful astrometri appliation of this multi-frequeny phase transfer method. In this ase the simultaneous observations of both frequenies and soures allowed solutions despite the non-integer ratio of the observed frequenies. While this new strategy does not present any advantage with respet to traditional tehniques in the m-wavelength regime, it does hold a big potential at high frequenies, whih are out of the range of onventional phase-referening. In partiular, we foresee a big impat when applied to observations of moleular line emission, where it 4

This is an argument in favor of instrumental ore shift. may provide bona fide astrometri alignment of emission arising from different transitions and help to eluidate the ontroversy between the proposed pumping mehanism for masers in evolved stars. Appendix A. The basis of the new method This setion outlines the basis of this astrometri method Soure/frequeny phase referening aimed to measure ore shifts in radio soures. Its appliation involves observations of the target and a nearby soure (in the formulae, A and B) at the two frequenies of interest (here x and s). At the post-proessing, the amplitude alibration is done using traditional tehniques, for all observations; a pure self-alibration analysis is used to solve for the phase, delay and rate of eah low frequeny (s) target soure (A) observations. Following the standard nomenlature, the phase values φ s A are shown as a ompound of geometri, tropospheri, ionospheri and instrumental terms - assuming that strutural ontributions φ s A,str have been omputed using the hybrid maps, and removed: φ s A = φs A,geo + φs A,tro + φs A,ion + φs A,inst + 2πns A, with ns A integer These values are saled by the frequeny ratio, R, and used to alibrate the high frequeny observations. The resultant high frequeny referened phases to the low frequeny are: φ x A R.φs A = φx A,str + (φx A,geo R.φs A,geo ) + (φx A,tro R.φs A,tro ) + (φx A,ion R.φs A,ion ) + (φ x A,inst R.φs A,inst ) + 2π(nx A R.ns A ) (1) This alibration strategy results in perfet anellation of non-dispersive tropospheri terms: (φ x A,tro R.φs A,tro ) = 0, but not for the dispersive ionosphere: (φx A,ion R.φs A,ion ) = (R 1 R )φs A,ion 5
6 Taking this into aount in Equation (1) above results in: φ x A R.φs A = φx A,str + 2πν D. θ A,sx + (R 1 R )φs A,ion + (φx A,inst R.φs A,inst ) + 2π(nx A R.ns A ) (2) where 2πν D. θ A,sx = (φ x A,geo R.φs A,geo ), and θ A,sx is the ore shift in A between s and x. Similarly, the analysis of the observations of a nearby alibrator, B, after removing strutural terms, φ x B,str and φ s B,str at both frequenies, results in: φ x B R.φs B = 2πν D. θ B,sx + (R 1 R )φs B,ion + (φx B,inst R.φs B,inst ) + 2π(nx B R.ns B ) (3) whih are transfered for further alibration of A soure observations. The resultant Soure/frequeny referened phases, ombining (2) and (3), are: (φ x A R.φs A ) (φx B R.φs B ) = φx A,str +2πν D.( θ A,sx θ B,sx) +(R 1 R )(φs A,ion φs B,ion )+(φx A,inst R.φs A,inst ) (φ x B,inst R.φs B,inst ) + 2π[(nx A R.ns A ) (nx B R.ns B )] A areful planning of the observations, namely swithing between suffiiently nearby soures with a duty yle whih mathes the ionospheri/instrumental time-sale variations, would result in negligible differential ionospheri error and instrumental orruption, that is: (R 1 R )(φs A,ion φs B,ion ) 0 (φ x A,inst R.φs A,inst ) (φx B,inst R.φs B,inst ) 0 whih results in an expression for the Soure/frequeny referened phases for the target soure free of ionospheri/instrumental orruption: (φ x A R.φs A ) (φx B R.φs B ) = φx A,str +2πν D.( θ A,sx θ B,sx) +2πn, with n integer if R integer (or n s A = ns B ) And finally, the alibrated omplex visibilities from the target observations are inverted to yield a synthesis image of A at x-band, where the offset from the enter is an estimate of the ombined ore shifts in A and B between s and x-bands.
