2 + INVENTORY Today we re taking inventory. You ll examine the location of existing digital photos as well as the main sources of future photos. But first, let s dig into the why.

3 Want to hide from your photos? You re here because something isn t quite working with your photos - and maybe you even want to hide from your photo library because it leaves you feeling frustrated and overwhelmed. A high-level inventory can immediately release much of the weight of photo clutter and chaos.

4 Get relief today! Taking inventory can help you turn disorganization into stacks and bins and compartments without lifting a finger. You ll be able to take that first deep breath of relief today.

5 Your photo inventory is an aerial map of your memories This feeling of ease comes from gaining the bird s eye view on your photos. Creating a high-level photo inventory will give you an aerial map of your memories. When you create this map, whether in words or as a diagram, you can begin to see connections between each map location and paths out of the weeds.

6 dayone Takeaway The first step to feeling MORE IN CONTROL of your photo library is to know WHAT YOU HAVE. In other words, the first step to feeling more in control of your photo library is to know what you have. You ll notice that the words in pink all caps here correspond to the blanks in your workbook. This will be the case throughout the presentations. Now let s get to today s assignment.

Most of your assignments will have two parts. For today I ll have you first create a list of every current location of digital photos. Remember we are talking about digital photos only for the purposes of this class and here we are thinking about existing, already-taken photos. Where are they? Next you ll create a list of every photo-taking device currently in service within your family. We have more cameras than ever these days, so it s important to look at all the incoming sources of images. Often we focus on our own photos and then photos taken my family members gum up the works. Together, these two lists will give you a starting place. Now, how about some examples?

You can include major sub-divisions, but don t worry about listing every folder. We ll get to that. We do, however, want to take note of any photo-taking devices that are currently being used as storage because the photos have not yet been removed. For the cameras, you want to list each device that s currently being used. You can ignore cameras that are tucked away in a closet, but do include any device that has captured an image in the last 3 months. For some that may include non-traditional cameras such as on a child s gaming device or a computer s web cam, if you want to save those images.

First we have a scrapbooker who is tech savvy, uses an Apple computer, takes lots of photos, and had trouble managing photos not taken by her. Our other example is a non-scrapbooker who is nervous about technology, uses a PC computer, takes photos in spurts, and wants to share her photos and videos more easily with friends. The first example is me and the second is my mom. Between the two of us we represent a range of experience levels and devices.

I have photos on two computers as well as on Flickr for sharing purposes. I have a good handle on the location of images I take, but not on my husband s photos - both older scans and new images. We have three cameras in service, though my daughter has been asking for a camera of her own. I will want to be able to integrate it into my plan quickly, so I will list that with a question mark so it s not forgotten.

Before we went through the Photo Crush exercises, her photos were spread across her laptop, phone, and ipad. She also backs up her photos and orders prints from Shutterfly. She has two cameras, though these days she s almost exclusively using her iphone. Each day I ll share both of our responses to the assignment so you can get a sense of where I m leading you. But, of course, please don t hesitate to ask questions in the Facebook group!
