1 Sunglass Selfi Illustration Mobile App Illustration with Adobe Capture & Adobe Draw In this hands on creative lab you will illustrate a self portrait using an ipad Pro. The ipad and an Apple Pencil will be provided for you to draw with. The project begins with a photo of you taken when you arrive at the session. You will learn how to use Adobe Capture, Adobe Draw and Creative Cloud Libraries. At the end of the session you will leave with a fully vector art illustration of yourself and a JPEG file that you can use for your social media profile. Add image layer and place portrait 2. Trace portrait with black lines 3. Fill shapes with colors 4. Create a patterned background 5. Add highlights and shadows to illustration 6. Send Illustration to Adobe Illustrator on a laptop 7. Save as illustration as a PDF and a JPEG. Copy files to a thumb drive to take home. 1 of 10

2 Adobe Capture First Screen 1. Select SHAPES tab 2. Tap + Second Screen 1. Aim ipad camera at the provided decorative paper 2. Adjust slider for detail 3. Tap large green button to capture image a b c Notes: (a) - Find images. (b) - Reverse camera. (c) - Inverse art Tap on screen for live preview/shape preview 2 of 10

3 Third Screen 1. Tap Next Fifth Screen 1. Tap SAVE SHAPE Notes: You may edit the shape with deselect, erase or crop, but it probably won t be necessary. a b Forth Screen 1. Tap Next Notes: (a) - Give the shape a descriptive name. (b) - You can chose a CC Library to save the shape too. For this workshop save the shape to the default My Library. Notes: Don t turn on smoothing. It will slow down the process and it isn t necessary. 3 of 10

4 Adobe Draw Get Started 1. Tap on large + to create new project 2. Chose square format Place Portrait Image 1. Create an Image Layer by tapping on the plus, and then tapping on Image Layer. Tap On my ipad to find your portrait. 4 of 10

5 2. Use a 2 finger pinch gesture to scale image. Fill the entire canvas with image. Tap Done to commit transform. 4. Tap on the Image Layer to bring up the layer options. Set the opacity to 50%. Tap transform if you want to reposition the image. Draw Outlines 1. Tap on the Basic Round brush (1st) to bring up the brush settings. Tap size and slide up or down to adjust. Set size between Tap and hold the image layer to activate it, then move the image layer below the draw layer. The layers should look like this. 5. Tap the Draw Layer to make it active. The active layer is highlighted in orange. 2. Tap on color to bring up color picker. Adjust luminosity to 100% black. 5 of 10

6 3. Trace the contours of the sunglasses, face, chin, hair, shoulders and shirt. Avoid drawing in too much detail. 5. Zoom out on your illustration to view the outlining progress. Fill outlined shapes with color 1. Double tap on the image layer to turn the visibility back on. Make sure the draw layer stays active with the orange border. 2. Tap on the second brush to bring up the brush options. Tap-hold to bring up the color picker. Drag the color picker over the image to pick a flesh color. Pick a lighter tone. 3. The brush opacity should be set to 100%. The brush style, size and settings are irrelevant for the coloring process. 4. Make sure to draw enclosed shapes. Zoom in for more control. Use the eraser to clean up lines like this. 6. Hide the image layer visibility by double tapping on it. Make sure all of the important features are outlined with enclosed shapes, even the shoulders and torso that go off of the canvas. 6 of 10

7 4. Tap-hold inside of outlined shapes to fill with the selected color. The brush settings and brush size are irrelevant for this process. Zoom in close to fill small areas with color. 6. Continue filling the shapes with colors until all of the shapes are filled. 7. Double tap on the image layer to hide the visibility. Check the progress of the illustration and make sure all of the shapes are filled. 2. Chose any brush. Select a bright color for the background. Make sure the opacity is set to 100%. Tap-hold on the new draw layer to fill the shape with color. Tap the X to close the square shape. 5. Pick a different color by tapping on the color chip to bring up the color wheel. Create a background 1. Create a new draw layer between the image layer and the current draw layer. Tap on the Shape menu and select the square shape by tapping on it. Scale the shape with a two finger gesture to fill the canvas. 3. Add another draw layer above the solid color background layer. 4. Go back to the Shapes menu and tap on the My Library tab to find the custom shape you created with Capture. (see page 3) 7 of 10

8 5. Make sure the new draw layer is active. Scale the shape pattern to fill the canvas. 6. Select a brush color to compliment the background color. 7. Double tap to fill the shape with color. Tap the X to close the shape. 9. Experiment with different blend modes and transparency to find a look you like. The previews give a good idea of how each Blend Mode will look. I set mine to Opacity 51% and Blend Mode Multiply. Add shading 1. Add a new layer and move it to the top layer priority. Change the blend mode of the new layer from Normal to Overlay. 8. Adjust the blend mode of the shape layer by tapping on the layer to bring up the layer options. Tap on Normal to bring up other blend mode options. 2. Select the Basic Flat Brush (3rd from top) and adjust the settings. Start with a brush size of 30 and adjust as needed. Set the opacity between Start with a white color. 8 of 10

9 3. Hide the three middle draw layers by double tapping on them. Make sure the top layer is active. Use the image as a guide to draw highlights. The brightness builds as you draw multiple times over the same area. 5. Pick a dark brown color and follow the same steps to add dark tones. Draw on the same layer as the highlights. Areas will become darker as you draw over them several times. 6. Switch to the Basic Taper Brush (2nd from the top). Add hair highlights and low lights following the same technique and settings as in step Turn on the visibility of the colored portrait layer to check the results. 7. Add another layer on the top of the stacking order. Change the blend mode to Multiply. Use this layer to create more shape, or add darker shadows. 9 of 10

10 8. Use either the Basic Taper or Basic Flat brush. Sample the flesh tone color and paint over flesh areas to create subtle blended shading. Sample a dark brown color to paint darker shadow areas. Send to Adobe Illustrator 10. Tap on the Share menu and chose Adobe Desktop Apps. 12. Illustrator launches and opens the illustration by way of the Creative Cloud. All of the layers are retained. 9. The illustration is almost done. Double tap the hidden background layers to reveal them and view your finished illustration. 11. Tap on Illustrator CC to send the Draw file to Illustrator on the laptop. 13. Go to File>Save As... Chose Adobe PDF Illustrator default setting preset. The PDF can be further edited in Illustrator at a later time. 14. Go to File>Export>Export For Screens. Set the scale to 0.5x and the format to JPG of 10
