2 The Application bar is new in the CS4 applications. It combines the menu bar with control buttons that allow you to perform tasks such as arranging multiple documents or changing the workspace view. You can also find a search box on the Application bar that you can use to get help in most applications. By default, all panels are docked at their locations; that is, they are attached so they do not move as you work with them. You can undock the Control panel to move it out into the application window by dragging the gripper bar at the left side of the panel. When it is not docked, a panel is said to be floating. To redock the Control panel at the top or bottom of the screen, move it toward the dock location until you see a heavy horizontal blue bar, then release the mouse button. The panel is once again docked. In addition to moving the Tools panel to any location on the screen, you can customize it by adjusting the display from a single column of tools to a double column by clicking the double right pointing arrows at the top of the panel. 2

Navigate to the location where you want to save the file, type a file name and select a format type if necessary, and then click the Save button. After you click the Save button, some applications, such as Illustrator and Photoshop, display a further dialog box that allows you to specify additional settings. 3

4 The workspace switcher is something you will want to point out to students. This allows them to reset the workspace back to one of the default settings if they have lost a panel or another student had been using the computer before them. An application window with a specific arrangement of panels is called a workspace. A quick tip: Double click on the Zoom tool in the Tools panel to display the document at 100%. 4

6 Bridge shows thumbnail images for all files including Illustrator. Bridge is the only way you can view thumbnail images for Illustrator without opening Illustrator and looking in the Preview Pane. 6

8 Most of Photoshop s painting, drawing, and text tools apply the foreground color. The Gradient tool by default blends the foreground and background colors. It s important to select the desired foreground and/or background color before using a tool that applies one of those colors. 8

9 The RGB model is best used for images that will appear on computer monitors, mobile devices, or in video or film productions. Spot colors are most useful for one or two color illustrations, or when a specific color is required, such as a corporation s signature color. Spot colors are always designated as global colors. In the earliest days of the World Wide Web, the so called Web safe color palette was developed, containing colors that would display the same way in all Web browsers. Although monitor and Web browser technology has advanced to the point that it is no longer necessary to adhere strictly to the Web safe palette when preparing illustrations for onscreen viewing, Illustrator will give you a visual cue if a color you have mixed is not one of the 216 Web safe colors. (NOTE TO TEACHER: examples of these cues can be seen in the second and fourth screen shot on the slide. The cue is shown below the fill and stroke boxes.) 9

10 Color Modes are also used in Photoshop. Introducing them now will make working in Photoshop easier. 10

11 To create a custom gradient select a gradient stop, you can apply color to it using any of the following methods: Create the desired color using the sliders in the Color panel. (If you begin with a default black and white gradient, you must change the color model from Grayscale to CMYK to display the color sliders in the Color panel.) Drag the current color from the Color panel to the stop. Hold down Alt and click a swatch in the Swatches panel, or drag the swatch on top of a gradient stop. 11

13 You can double click the fill layer to change the color of the shape. 13

14 After you enter text, you must commit the change to finish the insertion. Use the Commit button on the options bar or select another tool to commit the change. 14

15 Use the Link layers button to link selected layers so that the content of the linked layers can be moved or modified at the same time. Click the Add a layer style button to select special effects for objects on the selected layer. These effects are similar to the Illustrator Stylize effects, and the button looks the same as the Add New Effect button on the Illustrator Appearance panel. Use the Add layer mask button to create a mask that will obscure everything on a layer but the shape of the masking object. Use the Create new fill or adjustment layer button to insert a layer you can use to apply a fill or adjust the image in the layer below. 15

17 It is also possible to change the order of the objects in a specific layer. Drag the item to its new location in the layer list, or use the Arrange commands in the work area to send an item backward or forward; the position adjusts in the layer list as it changes in the work area. 17

18 You can also hide all layers except the selected layer using the Hide Others option on the Layers panel menu. To quickly lock more than one layer, drag the pointer down the edit box column. 18

20 To make simple rectangular or elliptical selections, use the Rectangular Marquee or Elliptical Marquee tool. The Lasso selection tools are useful when you need to select an irregular shape. You have three Lasso tools to choose from: the Lasso tool, the Polygonal Lasso tool, and the Magnetic Lasso tool. Use the Lasso tool to make a selection with a totally freeform shape. Drag with the tool around the area you want to select as if you were drawing with a pencil. When you release the mouse button, Photoshop automatically closes the loop to finish the selection. Use the Polygonal Lasso tool to make a freeform selection of line segments and angles (points). Click the image each time you want to change direction, and double click to complete the selection. The Magnetic Lasso tool enables you to make a selection that follows the contours of an object. The tool works best when the color of the area you want to select contrasts well with the background area. 20

21 To apply a fill to a selection, use the Edit > Fill command to open the Fill dialog box. You can choose from a list of fill options, such as the foreground or background color, a color from the Color picker, or a pattern. You can also select a blending mode and opacity for the fill. 21

22 Review the buttons on the Magic Wand options bar (identified below from left to right). Click the New selection button to create a new selection with the selected tool. If an area is already selected, your new selection replaces the existing selection. Click the Add to selection button to add pixels to the current selection. Click the Subtract from selection button to remove an area from the current selection. Click the Intersect with selection button to select an area included in both a prior selection and a new area you select. 22

23 There are a number of advantages to using an adjustment layer. You can minimize the damage that occurs in an image when a number of adjustments are made to it. Multiple adjustments can cause loss of image data and subsequent degradation of the image. If you don t like the adjustments you make to the layer, you can simply delete the layer and your original image is still intact. You can modify appearance on a number of layers at one time, because an adjustment layer impacts all layers below it. 23

24 Color Balance Adjustments Shadows are the darkest areas of an image. Highlights are areas where the light is strongest. Midtones are areas with tone values between those of highlights and shadows. Correct Levels For a photo that s overexposed (too bright or washed out), the black areas in the histogram will be bunched toward the right (highlight) side. Drag the left (shadow) slider to the right to help correct this situation. When the black areas of the histogram are bunched to the left, the photo is underexposed (too dark), and dragging the highlight or midtone slider to the left can help. 24

27 The Create New Snapshot button is to the left of the trash can on the bottom of the panel and the Snapshot appears at the top of the panel. You then can use the History Brush on the Toolbox to paint from that snapshot. 27

33 Other tools on the Pen tool hidden toolbar, and options on the Control panel when a single anchor point is selected, can be used to modify any path: Use the Add Anchor Point to add an anchor point anywhere on a path. Use the Delete Anchor Point tool or the Remove selected anchor points button on the Control panel to delete any selected anchor point on a path. Use the Convert Anchor Point tool or the Convert selected anchor points to corner option on the Control panel to convert a smooth point to a corner point. 33

37 It is possible to apply more than one effect to an object to create even more unusual and interesting appearances, but you can apply only one at a time using the Effect Gallery. The order in which you add the effects can make a great difference to the appearance. 37

38 Mask An overlay that protects one area of an image so that modifications can be made to another area of the image. Quick mask A mask created when viewing any selection in Quick Mask mode. Quick Mask mode A display mode that makes it easy to add to or subtract from a selection to create a mask. 38

39 Clipping mask A mask that uses pixels on one layer to define a mask on the layer above. Note: painting with a Black paintbrush creates a hole in the picture and painting with a White paintbrush fixes the picture. Shades of gray create a transparent effect and allow an underlying image to bleed through the image. 39
