2 CHAIRMAN S CHAT The New Year has hit the ground running. Every year it seems to run faster and faster. As I write this the first month has already passed by and we are well into the second. For me, personally, it has been a busy first month with a business trip to India. I attended a conference in Mumbai. The conference was very interesting and productive but, more importantly, the photography was amazing! It is not the kind of place you would recommend to everybody for a holiday. There is rubbish everywhere and a rather unpleasant odour hangs in the air. But it is a land of contrasts, untold wealth lives side by side with unspeakable poverty. Dark, dirty colours contrast with rich bright fabrics. I love photographing people and there are plenty of opportunities to do that kind of photography. There are interesting faces there, lots of them. The middle aged to elderly women were particularly interesting, but they were very reluctant to have their photographs taken. The children, on the other hand, wanted their photographs taken and would follow me around until I took their picture. That wasn t a problem really except when you were really wanting to take more interesting images! The living conditions in some areas made for excellent photojournalism type images and in those same areas were the most interesting people to photograph. I never got much further than about a kilometre from my hotel, and I never had more than about 6 hours of photography, but I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. I often wonder, if I wasn t a photographer, would I venture into those areas of decay and poverty. They are not pretty. But I did come away very satisfied that I had experienced real India, not tourist India. I was also happy with my pics! I would like to urge all members to come to the club meetings regularly. It seems that other pressures have forced members to scale down on photography. Sometimes we need to escape from our busy lives to do something we enjoy. This may take a bit of an effort but it is worth it. There can be nothing better than being creative with our cameras or even just sitting back and appreciating good images. Look forward to seeing you soon. Colin Page 2 of 16
