2 Creating a Foil Portrait Overview To create a foil portrait, you print the Scodix foil on blank white paper without any CMYK printing, and create a monochromatic portrait with foil. Content 1. Foil Type Examples Taking the Portrait Photograph The following criteria are recommended for the portrait photograph. If an existing photograph meets these criteria, you can use it for the Scodix Foil portrait. Note: Lighting: The photo shooting requires a soft light. Avoid direct sunlight or any contrast light. Background: Light gray is recommended Resolution: High resolutions (minimum 2000 pixels X 3000 pixels) are recommended for better details and sharpness. Things to avoid: Avoid high key pictures with high contrast and white points. Avoid reflections. Non-portrait photographs that meet these criteria can also be used. 3 Preparing the File in Photoshop 1. Open the portrait file in Adobe Photoshop. Different cameras have different layouts for size and resolution of the captured image, so you must pay extra attention to image size and resolution. The following example is set up for sheet size 464 mm X 320 mm. If you have a different sheet size and you want to print the image in different size, adjust as required. 2. Convert the file to grayscale: In the Image menu, select Mode > Grayscale. AN-3031 Rev. 02 Creating a Foil Portrait with Scodix Foil Page 3 of 10

4 3. Setting the image resolution and size: Keep the resolution at 300 dpi. The image size must be smaller than the sheet size (in this example 24 cm x 36 cm). 4. If necessary, change the canvas size to match the sheet size. To add head room, and to print in the center of the sheet, add space in the leading and trailing edges. 5. In image mode, convert the file to Bitmap: In the Image menu, select Mode > Bitmap. AN-3031 Rev. 02 Creating a Foil Portrait with Scodix Foil Page 4 of 10

5 6. In the Bitmap dialog box, set the following parameters: Output: 300 dpi. Method: Halftone Screen Click OK. 7. In the Halftone Screen dialog box, set the following parameters: Frequency: 20 Lines/Inch Angle: 30 degrees Shape: Cross Click OK. 6 After you set the Halftone parameters, if you zoom in, you can see that in darker areas the diagonal lines are thicker, and in lighter areas, the diagonal lines are thinner. The foil will be placed on the darker lines. 8. To add text or logo to the final layout: Note: If you do not need to add text or logo, proceed to step 9 on page 7. a. 7 b. Adding text to the final layout: Add text or logo to the bottom or top of the portrait. 9. Save the file in PDF format: This stage is crucial in achieving the best layout for the Scodix Press. a. In the Save as type: box, select pdf. b. 8 c. In the Compression settings, set the following: In the Options dropdown list, select Do Not Downsample. In the Compression dropdown list, select None. Be sure to save your changes. TIP: Multi-PDF file: You can combine a few PDF files with the same sheet size into one multi-pdf file and send it to the Scodix Press. This provides the impressive effect of printing a multipage PDF file with a different portrait on each page. Printing with Scodix Ultra Press with Foil Requirements The substrate must be a coated paper (we use standard Chromo matte coating). Size should match the printed file. The Foil brand should be from the Scodix Recommended Foil List (RFL). (We tested with Kurz & GMP). The recommended color for the foil portrait is gold or silver. Other colors can also be used. Procedure 1. Load the blank sheets into the Scodix Ultra Feeder, centered in the feeder table. 2. Load the file to the Scodix Press as usual, marking the foil option. Print mode Foil40 is recommended for better details and sharpness. 3. Set the necessary parameters for your foil type and substrate for best foil transfer.
