Clear Dry Ink adds creative effects that bring your prints to life and get your messages noticed. What is Clear Dry Ink? When your customers look to you to add impact to their printed materials, Clear Dry Ink is the perfect choice. It not only adds eye-appeal, Clear Dry Ink adds real value to your designs, and offers another creative way to help your customers deliver their message. With Clear Dry Ink as the fifth station you can create dazzling effects on your Xerox Color 800/1000 Presses. Clear Dry Ink delivers vibrant, highdefinition image quality and a wide color gamut that makes images come to life. And the best part it doesn t take a lot of time or effort to achieve dazzling results for your customers. You can demonstrate the effects of Clear Dry Ink by using a general workflow at the digital front end (DFE). It s that easy. Once you understand the techniques for applying Clear Dry Ink and follow the steps to apply it in this guide, you are ready to start designing! What can Clear Dry Ink do for you? With Clear Dry Ink, you can maximize your design flexibility for just about any type of promotional piece. Clear Dry Ink helps you be a true consultant with your customers to suggest applications that can maximize the impact of their message. Add Clear Dry Ink as a spot treatment over an image or text to create a tactile dimension that catches the eye, creates an emotion and spurs action. As a watermark, Clear Dry Ink is a great security feature that disappears when the document is copied. Clear watermarks can also be a powerful yet subtle design element to elegantly help you make your point. When you flood an entire page with Clear Dry Ink, it adds a dramatic, soft offset-like sealant for those pieces that are prone to wear from handling. Show your customers the clear difference Photos that pop off the page Key messages or variable text that get noticed Highlight photos, logos and graphics to create dimension Simulate the richness of pearlescent or metallic tones Apply watermarks to add artistic effects or document security Enhance the print quality of textured stocks... To learn more about designing and printing with Clear Dry Ink, got to: Guide to Designing with Clear Dry Ink 3

Select one key area or several to create the visual impact you are looking for. Clear Dry Ink also enhances varied textures on a single printed surface to give the printed piece a more high-end, polished look. Spot over a photograph Add Clear Dry Ink to certain areas of a photo to reach out and grab the reader s attention, or designate Clear Dry Ink to highlight just a few of its features. Clear Dry Ink can also add a texture over a photo, giving the illusion of dimension.... Tip: Apply spot Clear Dry Ink to emphasize interesting areas of an image. Cover the entire image to give it a soft and even appearance. 4 Guide to Designing with Clear Dry Ink

It only takes a spot of Clear Dry Ink to draw attention. Spot over text It s not just imagery that can fly off the page. Apply Clear Dry Ink to one word or several Clear Dry Ink draws attention to your messages. Start by finding the focal point of your piece. It can be a heading or variable text or any combination. Clear Dry Ink makes text inescapable for the reader. Spot over a solid color By adding Clear Dry Ink over a solid color, you can increase the depth and overall sheen of that color, making it lift off the page. This effect works best when Clear Dry Ink is applied over lighter colors to create subtle, interesting patterns and to show off graphics. clear dryink... Tip: To maximize the effect, apply Clear Dry Ink at 100% and place it over and/or next to light colors. Guide to Designing with Clear Dry Ink 5

Flood your page with Clear Dry Ink to add a soft and even finish to your piece. Let Clear Dry Ink flood the entire page to add a soft and even finish to your entire piece, giving it an offset-like appearance. Clear Dry Ink provides an even sheen that adds depth to photos and a smooth, consistent look across an image. Flooding can also help to protect your applications from damage due to frequent handling, almost adding a layer of sealant, especially helpful for direct mail and other pieces that are susceptible to wear. Flood-coating with Clear Dry Ink... also enables you to evenly print on textured papers for better digital image quality. Note: For demonstration purposes, we applied Clear Dry Ink over the left side only. Guide to Designing with Clear Dry Ink 7

Metallic effect When you design in PANTONE metallic colors simulated in CMYK and add a layer of Clear Dry Ink, your printed pieces offer a rich, metallic sheen. The metallic effect can also add elegance to your text. Tinted varnish effect Create a subtle varnish effect by adding a light tint to a design and then apply a spot of Clear Dry Ink over it. The tinted effect can be its own design element, or when applied over text and images, you create extra attention-getting power. With the Clear Dry Ink capabilities of the Xerox Color 800/1000 Presses and eye-catching spot treatment, you have another creative tool to help customers see their promotional materials succeed. 8 Guide to Designing with Clear Dry Ink

Just a spot of Clear Dry Ink adds a tactile dimension that catches the eye, creates an emotion and spurs action. Watermarks Watermarks created using Clear Dry Ink bring new value to your printed pieces. These subtle, authenticating marks can provide notice for copyrighted materials or discourage copying of coupons or tickets. Watermarks are seen but since Clear Dry Ink has no pigment, they cannot be copied or scanned. Repeat a watermark across the entire page as part of an interesting but soft-spoken background design element. Watermarks can also quietly reinforce your message or evoke a mood. Guide to Designing with Clear Dry Ink 9

easy! Setting Up Your InDesign File 1. Add a new layer in the layers pallet and name it. (Example A) 2. Move the clear layer to the top in the layers pallet. (Example B) 3. Add a new color in the swatches pallet and name it Clear. (Example C) Important: Clear is the default name in some DFEs. You must use the same swatch name across all applications you use. The swatch name is case sensitive. 4. Designate the Color Type as Spot. 5. Set the Color Mode to CMYK: 0/100/0/0. You can choose any of the 4 process colors and set it to 100%. You are now ready to assign the color Clear to fills and strokes of text and shapes. Applying Clear Dry Ink It s easy to apply Clear Dry Ink to text and graphics created in InDesign or pasted from Adobe Illustrator to print as a watermark or over photographs, text and graphics containing color. 1. Draw a shape in InDesign or copy and paste a graphic from Illustrator into your InDesign document. 2. Designate the fill and/or line to be Clear. 3. Move all clear elements to the clear layer. 4. Choose overprint if overlapping other images. Select Window > Attributes > Overprint Fill and/or Stroke. (Example D) Tinted effects A tinted effect is created by layering two identical objects on top of each other. The objects on the top layer will print with Clear Dry Ink allowing the color from the object below to show through. 1. Paste or create a vector graphic and fill it with a light color or tint. 2. Copy your graphic and paste in place on the clear layer. 3. Apply the color Clear. 4. Chose Window > Attributes > Overprint Fill and/or Stroke. (Example D) Applying Clear Dry Ink to raster effects Raster effects such as soft edges or gradient fills created in Photoshop can be designated to print with Clear Dry Ink by adding a spot channel in Photoshop. 12 C L E A R D R Y I N K easy! Clear Dry Ink has the power to dazzle and draw attention to your designs two essential ingredients for successful promotional materials. When your customers are looking for new ways to get their products or services noticed, suggest Clear Dry Ink for unforgettable printed results. Many of the effects in this guide can easily be achieved using a general workflow with your Xerox Color 800/1000 Presses at the digital front end (DFE). In fact, you can add dramatic effects with Clear Dry Ink without having to modify your customer s files. To learn more about designing and printing with Clear Dry Ink, go to: Summary Add a spot color for Clear Dry Ink and name it correctly. The clear layer needs to be the topmost layer in your file. For best results, apply Clear Dry Ink at 100% and apply it over or next to light colors. All elements designated with Clear Dry Ink need to be located on the clear layer at the top of all other elements. Make sure the designated name for Clear Dry Ink is the same across all programs used. Names are case sensitive. Print on matte or dull coated papers for best results. Covering an entire image with Clear Dry Ink will even out the sheen and enhance the depth across the image. Check your PDF file in Acrobat Pro Print Preview before sending it to the print provider. Specify overprint if the clear element is overlapping other elements on your page. Add a spot channel in Photoshop when creating raster effects.
