1 Lab for Working with Adobe Photoshop Try the tasks listed with one of the sample images supplied (You will find them in the Course Materials section of Blackboard as the file sample_images.zip. You will need WinZip to unzip it). You can use the corresponding tutorials posted as help for the lab. Adobe Photoshop documentation (can be invoked by pressing the key F1) will also help you. Remember the submission conditions: Place the files created in this lab in the corresponding assignment on the Assignment section of Blackboard, after you have placed them in your MSUWEB site (See end of lab) Start here: Open Adobe Photoshop CS6 {Use something like Start -> Programs -> Adobe Design and Web Premium CS6-> Adobe Photoshop CS6 (executable file)} 1. Creating a New Image: This part tells you how to create an image in the Adobe Photoshop. Click the menu File ->New Type a name for the image, and set the width and height in pixels. There are some preset sizes which sets the image in the standard format. Specify the resolution for the image. Select an option for the contents of the background layer or first layer of the image: For the default background color, there are three options: White, Background Color and transparent. The default background color is the white color. Also you can choose any other color from the color palette. Transparent to make the first layer transparent, with no color values. The resulting document will have a single, transparent layer as its contents. These modes are given for the Background color option: 1) Bitmap opens the image in Black color format. 2) Grayscale mode opens the image in gray color format. 3) RGB Color opens the image in that color format which you chose as a background color. 4) CMYK Color also opens the image in that color format which you chose as a background color. 5) Lab Color opens the image in that color format which you chose as a background color. Then click on OK. It will create a new image.

2 Open the image: This part tells you how to open an already existing image in the Adobe Photoshop. Click the menu File ->Open A dialog Box will be opened. Specify the file name or its complete path and then click on Open option. 2. Changing the image size and resolution in Adobe Photoshop: As per the given steps to open an already existing image, open an image. Then, Choose Image->Image Size. Under Document Size, enter new values for the height and width. If desired, choose a new unit of measurement. Note that for Width, the Columns option uses the width and gutter sizes specified in the Units & Rulers preferences. For Resolution, enter a new value. If desired, choose a new unit of measurement. To maintain the current proportions of image width to image height, select Constrain Proportions. This option automatically updates the width as you change the height, and vice versa. To change only the print dimensions or only the resolution and adjust the total number of pixels in the image proportionately, make sure that Resample Image is selected. Deselect Resample Image, to change the print dimensions and resolution without changing the total number of pixels in the image. 3. To view the print size on-screen: Choose View > Print Size. You can do this in the other way as: Select the hand tool or zoom tool, and click Print Size in the options bar. 4. Magnifying images: The hand tool, the zoom tools, the Zoom commands, and the Navigator palette let you view different areas of an image at different magnifications. zoom in: Choose View > Zoom In Then click on the image area to magnify it. You can also do it in other way as: Select the zoom tool from the tools. Select the option and click the area on the image you want to magnify. Each click magnifies the image zoom out: Choose View > Zoom Out

3 Then click on the image area to reduce it. You can also do it in other way as: Select the zoom tool from the tools. Select the option and click the area on the image you want to reduce. Each click reduces the image To display an image at 100%: Double-click the zoom tool. Choose View > Actual Pixels To change the view to fit the screen: Double-click the hand tool. Choose View > Fit on Screen. These options scale both the zoom level and the window size to fit the available screen space. 5. To rotate or flip an entire image: Choose Image > Rotate Canvas Then choose one of the following commands from the submenu: to rotate the image by a half-turn CW to rotate the image clockwise by a quarter-turn CCW to rotate the image counterclockwise by a quarter-turn. - Arbitrary to rotate the image by the angle you specify. If you choose this option, enter an angle between and in the angle text box, and then select CW or CCW to rotate clockwise or counterclockwise. Click OK. -Flip Canvas Horizontal to flip the image horizontally, along the vertical axis. -Flip Canvas Vertical to flip the image vertically, along the horizontal axis. 6. Converting between color modes: When you choose a different color mode for an image, you permanently change the color values in the image. Before converting images, it's best to do the following: Do as much editing as possible in the image's original mode. Save a backup copy before converting. Be sure to save a copy of your image that includes all layers in order to edit the original version of the image after the conversion. The interaction of colors between layer blending modes will change when the mode changes. To convert an image to another mode:

4 Choose Image > Mode and the mode you want from the submenu. Modes not available for the active image appear dimmed in the menu. To convert a grayscale or RGB image to indexed color: 1. Choose Image > Mode > Indexed Color. For grayscale images, the conversion happens automatically. For RGB images, the Indexed Color dialog box appears. 2. Select Preview the Indexed Color dialog box to display a preview of the changes. 3. Specify conversion options To edit colors in the color table: 1. Open the indexed-color image. 2. Choose Image > Mode > Color Table. 3. Click or drag in the table to choose the color or range of colors you want to change. 4. Choose a color and click OK. If you are changing a range of colors, Photoshop creates a gradient in the color table between the starting and ending colors. The first color you choose in the Color Picker is the beginning color for the range. When you click OK, the Color Picker reappears so that you can choose the last color in the range. The colors you selected in the Color Picker are placed in the range you selected in the Color Table dialog box. 5. Click OK in the Color Table dialog box to apply the new colors to the indexed-color image. To assign transparency to a single color: 1. Choose Image > Mode > Color Table. 2. Select the eyedropper, and click the desired color in the table or in the image. The sampled color is replaced with transparency in the image. 7. Using the Color Range command: The Color Range command selects a specified color or color subset within an existing selection or an entire image. To refine an existing selection, use the Color Range command repeatedly to select a subset of colors. For example, to select the green areas in a cyan selection, select Cyans in the Color Range dialog box, and click OK. Then reopen the Color Range dialog box, and select Greens. To select a color range using sampled colors: 1. Choose Select > Color Range. 2. For Select, choose the Sampled Colors tool. 3. Select one of the display options: Selections to preview only the selection as you build it.

5 Image to preview the entire image. For example, you might want to sample from a part of the image that isn't on-screen. 4. Position the pointer over the image or preview area, and click to sample the colors you want included. 5. Adjust the range of colors using the Fuzziness slider or by entering a value. To decrease the range of colors selected, decrease the value. The Fuzziness option partially selects pixels by controlling the degree to which related colors are included in the selection (whereas the Tolerance option for the magic wand and paint bucket options increases the range of colors that are fully selected). 6. Adjust the selection: To add colors, select the plus eyedropper, and click in the preview area or image. To remove colors, select the minus eyedropper, and click in the preview area or image. 7. To preview the selection in the image window, choose an option for Selection Preview: None to display no preview in the image window. Grayscale to display the selection as it would appear in a grayscale channel. Black Matte to display the selection in color against a black background. White Matte to display the selection in color against a white background. Quick Mask to display the selection using the current quick mask settings. 8.To revert to the original selection, hold down Alt, and click Reset. To save and load color range settings: Use the Save and Load buttons in the Color Range dialog box to save and reuse the current settings. What to do in this lab: Use the original image that you choose at the beginning of this lab. Save it with the name Original. Work with this original, and perform several of the tasks mentioned in this lab. Your grade will be affected, among other things, by the number of tasks you perform in the original image. Save the modified image with the name Workdone, both in psd format and a format that can be used in your webpage. Create an html file, which includes both images, with the appropriate names, and save the file with the name Both_images on your MSUWEB folder. These images should be seen directly on the page that opens the html file. Open the index.html file from your MSUWEB folder, the one you created in the previous lab, and include a new reference to the Both_images file. Save back the new index file on your MSUWEB folder. Upload the psd file to Blackboard.

6 Try out your website to be sure that everything can be accessed from the index file, i.e. from your home page.
