3 Shaftesbury Camera Club NOVEMBER 2015 Newsletter Web members area: username = camera, password = thursday We open this newsletter with sad news. Norman Good, a very active and long standing member of the former Shaftesbury Art Centre Camera Group, and latterly a very supportive member of our newly established Shaftesbury Camera Club passed away last week. Norman has shared his wonderful images over many years. We send thoughts and condolences to his wife Isabel and family at their loss as well as to Bill and Elspeth for the loss of a great brother-in-law. There will be a funeral service for Norman at 12 noon on Thursday 12 th November 2015 at St James Church, Shaftesbury Our first round for the Shuffell Trophy Competition was Open and judged by Paul Thackeray who was extremely perceptive, awarding marks to a wide range of subjects. The top scoring prints were KA Green s Shadow Play and Val Saxby s Dog. The PDI winners were Mike Harding with Look into my Eyes and Sunset Old Pier Swanage, Val Saxby with Fly Past and KA Green with Hot Gossip. Many words of encouragement and some constructive criticism, he gave excellent descriptions with help for the author - an excellent evening. Log in to our website for full results For our In house Critique evening, we discussed ways of improving and selecting images which turned out to be very helpful with a lot of good advice shared. A successful evening rounded off by Val showing us images of what the Salons expect and accept and answering various queries. Hopefully she inspired more members to submit images to Salons. The Bradford Abbas Shield competition (away) with the subject Umbrellas was judged by Michael Birbeck, and was between Sherborne Bradford Abbas, (hosts), Wincanton, Yeovil, South Petherton and ourselves. Meeting Dates 2015 Thurs 12th November Ladies v Gents PDI Competition Judge: Colin Gogerty A fun Competition that hopefully all will enter, everyone will have at least one image chosen Although last year we were surprised to win the Shield, we knew this year would be harder with this tricky subject. Mike marked down images where the umbrella was not the main subject and we only managed four 18 s in the evening. Full results are on the website. Well done to Yeovil who won and thanks to all our members who contributed PDIs and Prints so we could assemble our entry. October was rounded off with a third meeting preceded by Brian leading a short and very useful workshop for five members on producing Audio-Visual sequences. We then welcomed ****** Thurs 26th November Audio Visual Evening Presentations of up to 5minutes. Please bring yours on a memory stick. The best will be judged by the audience

4 Guest Speaker Huw Alban with his talk The Emotional Landscape. Huw s philosophy and mind set is influenced by emotion a key to his insight. He is a very unusual photographer a photographic impressionist, technical perfection is secondary to him. His desire to stop, pause and look at an image; creating images that people stop and look and engage in finally producing an emotional reaction. Photography is what you feel and not what you see quoted Gosling. Huw demonstrated his feelings and moods beautifully using light. When judging competitions he comments on what he likes and not what is the laid down rules. He is drawn to monochrome because it is an enabler to enhance the mood, he believes colour is a distraction. Keep all your bad images, one can only learn from them. A thought provoking evening making the audience think, Huw s images conveyed the mood before he even spoke about them. Reminders to Members: WCPF Annual Digital Competition will be at Exeter again in February. We did much better than we expected last year so would like a strong entry. We need entries by the end of November so we can compile our entry before the Christmas deadline. We relied on the club s back catalogue last year so need lots of new images to choose from. We need a total of 18 images, with no more than 4 per photographer. Do upload up to 6 images via the website. Number of nature images is unrestricted this year and will use the PAGB definition for nature images. The DPIC 2016 terms and conditions can be found via the website Competitions: Set Subject for the third round, in February, of the Shuffell Trophy is Open but in Monochrome eg black and white, sepia etc. Annual Subscriptions We hope you have all paid your subscriptions now and look forward to settling in to an exciting new year. Only members may enter competitions. Workshops: The new season gives us an opportunity to organise these according to members needs, so please tell us what you want covered. We can do either short one-to-one sessions or larger groups so please tell us! Website: Please log in (details in this newsletter header) to the website for all our latest news and links to events elsewhere. 5 Shaftesbury Camera Club DECEMBER 2015 Newsletter Web members area: username = camera, password = thursday Merry Christmas to you all with Peace, Joy and Happiness in the New Year The Ladies and Gents PDI competition was judged by Colin Gogerty who had a very difficult time trying to separate the two sides! At half time the men had the edge but some excellent 10 s from the ladies in the second half left the men trailing by ONE mark. The final scores were Ladies 204 and Gents 203 with four 10 s apiece. There was no bribery or movement of monies! There were some good quality and high scoring images which Colin marked with humour and insight. He felt several would benefit from cropping and suggested returning to an image again to see if more cropping would help. Thank you Colin, we appreciate your comments of help, criticism and compliments. Our Audio Visual evening which was organised and projected with our new Optima projector by Brian Tarling was very successful with 12 members participating and producing very varied AVs. The soundtracks varied from music through speech to fireworks. The audience voted for their favourite and the winner was Val Saxby with a beautiful presentation of the wildlife in Bushy Park, second was a new member Gareth Ayre with Autumn with colourful local scenes (welcome Gareth, we look forward to seeing more of your work). 9 Shaftesbury Camera Club FEBRUARY 2016 Newsletter Web members area: username = camera, password = thursday We were treated to three excellent speakers in January. The first was Bertie Gregory, a young (22) aspiring professional wildlife photographer, film-maker and presenter. Bertie led us from his childhood passion for rivers and obsession with underwater photography through the 2020 Vision project on Urban Life for Wildlife which showcased his work on the Peregrine Falcon. After graduating in Zoology Bertie landed a job with National Geographic assisting Steve Winter in South Africa filming leopards using a drone. He then showed us work from some recent photographic projects: scuba diving in the Red Sea; Rock paintings in Columbia; urban leopards in Bombay; and the magic of the Sri Lankan jungle. His latest project for National Geographic was a return to the west coast of Vancouver Island following the Black Bear and Coastal Wolves. A happy, amusing and rich journey in a rubber dinghy where he produced some fantastic aerial photography using a drone, proving that the key to good wildlife photography is the time one spends getting to know the habitat and character of the animals. Bertie produced a wonderfully animated talk which kept us fascinated and certainly on the edge of our seats. His scariest moment was going through customs!! Our second guest, Eva Worobiec enlightened us with her talk Working in Themes. She and her photographer husband have travelled extensively photographing images on a theme. She showed American Diners, Motels and old cinemas at various stages of decay and by zooming in close, catching interesting angles and detail. Meeting Dates 2016 Thurs 11th February The Shuffell Trophy 3rd round Subject: Open in Monochrome Judge Graham Ireland DEADLINE for entries Sunday 7th February *********** Wed 24th February Boscombe Camera Club An away competition where we hope revenge will be sweet: we lost by 3 marks last time! *********** Thurs 25th February Guest speaker, Mike Weeks. An evening of portrait photography. Please bring your cameras. All lighting and relevant equipment provided. Another of her themes was Coastal structures, with lighthouses, piers with inconsequential posts producing great images. Eva also showed us landscapes from Spain. She is a little scared of taking portraits but enjoys street photography, questioning the accepted rules and angles, preferring to depend on intuition. Many of her photographs - or parts of them - have been sold very successfully through agencies for book covers. Eva gave us some new thoughts and ideas for our photography together with some good tips and composition. We thoroughly enjoyed her excellent images. Our final speaker was Dr Bob Gibbons FRPS on Perils and Pleasures of Nature Photography. He has been described as one of Britain s best naturalists, leading tours all over the world and having written numerous books on natural history and photography. Bob presented a brilliant and amusing evening with many useful ideas and was not shy of showing us some amusing mistakes. He uses a wide angle lens for most of his work and usually a tripod. He explained his techniques for controlling light with diffusers, backlighting flowers and trees and painting with light. His Flower images were exquisite, both as close ups and with the natural beauty of flowers enhancing landscapes. His bird and insect photography showed the importance of being at the right place at the right time. His travels were very exciting and were presented with much amusement and aplomb. Thank you for your expertise and an enjoyable, informative evening.

Mike brought a lot of equipment to demonstrate his techniques for portrait lighting and to impart his vast knowledge on diffusing sources of light, changing angles of light on the subject, feathering techniques, using brollies etc. This was all very technical but once you have the basics, it is great! 90% of the work is gaining a rapport with the subject, which for us was Serena - a very patient and persevering model who accepted all our cameras invading her space. 13 Shaftesbury Camera Club APRIL 2016 Newsletter Web members area: username = camera, password = thursday Our external competition was our first against Salisbury CC, a rather more established club than ourselves. The agreed rules were the usual maximum of two images per photographer but Salisbury actually limited themselves to one each across both classes, i.e. 24 individual members! We couldn t achieve this but did manage 15 different photographers. We are very grateful to our Judge for the evening, Mike Weeks who stood in at very short notice (and we wish Rob B a speedy recovery). In fact, we had seen Mike just two weeks earlier when he gave us a practical evening demonstrating his lighting skills as a professional event photographer. His judging was refreshing and humorous with good critiques although one or two images defeated him, having not been Photoshopped! After the Prints section, the scores were well balanced but Salisbury pulled into a clear lead in the PDIs to win by a comfortable 3.5 points. Salisbury have already invited us to a return match next season. Many thanks to both Mike and Salisbury for an entertaining and worthwhile evening. Club members Karen A Green and Mike Harding were the inhouse speakers at our second March meeting. Karen spoke about her travels to out of the way places by herself with minimal camera equipment but a bag full of stuff to keep herself fit. Her motto is if you don t ask you won t get and she rarely gets a refusal. She showed images going back to her Kodak Gold days and others from her recent trip to Morocco. It ****** was amusing to see Morrisons carrier bags in the Sahara which Camera Club EXHIBITION she took full of children s clothes to give away. at After the break Mike described his journey from developing his Shaftesbury Museum own black and white film in the stair well and taking a lovely From study of his first son with his parents, through a period of Sat 30 th April Fri 6 th May photographing aircraft, to landscapes, seascapes, waterfalls and, most recently, painting with light. This was all illustrated with some stunning prints. We really appreciate Karen and Mike giving us an excellent evening. On March 17 th 6 of our Prints were entered for the Newbury Challenge Plate, this competition for 8 clubs was judged by Roy Lambeth and we came an honourable 8 th, one mark behind Newbury. He is best known for his images of the Antarctic in the book of the BBC series Life in the Freezer. His images have also been published in National Geographic, Geo, BBC Wildlife and many more. Winner of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year in 2007 and an Hon. Fellow of the RPS. Shaftesbury Camera Club Exhibition at Gold Hill Museum Sat April 30 th to Fri May 6 th 2016 This year we will be only showing prints which will mean that we do not have to man the room all the time. The exhibition will be a week long. It is up to each Member as to which of his/her work is to be exhibited. Every Member who submits work will be represented (last year we were able to hang all the prints submitted). Members can enter up to 6 mounted prints although the number displayed will depend on the space. Please your print titles by Thursday April 14th with your phone number, numbered in the order you wish them selected i.e. your favourite as 1 and the one you least bothered about as the last number. Bring your actual mounted prints on April 14 th club night or, if that is impossible, get them to Helen by Sunday April 24th. Unfortunately bringing them to Star Night on 28 th doesn t give us enough time to prepare for hanging on the 29 th. Please ensure all packaging including cellophane sleeves & carrier bags are named!!! We will return the prints on May 12 th which is the PDI and Print of the year competition so any that are entered into that competition can be cycled! 15 Shaftesbury Camera Club MAY 2016 Newsletter Web members area: username = camera, password = thursday Shaftesbury Camera Club enjoyed a very lively session with An evening at the Salons led by Brian Tarling. Brian conducted a brilliant evening with members taking a very active part in discussing and commenting on the images. These were from recent Salons for both our enjoyment and critique. On the whole, members agreed with the Salon awards but with some worthwhile criticism and a few alternative views. This was a programme change, but thoroughly enjoyed - thank you very much Brian for guiding and educating us about judging. Our STAR NIGHT Wild: Life and Landscape with Ben Osborn produced an audience full of photographic enthusiasts, both members and public. Ben took us through the whys and wherefores of his early career, originally as a research biologist! Ben disagreed with overhandling of birds and discovered science was not for him but it did give him a love of wildlife. The BBC asked if he would photograph Life in a Freezer South Georgia. Of course he accepted - David Attenborough was also the catch! So posing with penguins and ice shelves was the order of the day. Ben welcomed and accepted the digital audio/visual merging age with great excitement. And his Antarctic images of amazing light on ice were very graphic. The Himalayas were photographed from the air during wildlife surveys in Ladakh. Then off in a helicopter to Northern Botswana filming elephants and to Savuti filming lions hunting elephants using a stabilised camera on the helicopter from a distance, with no disturbance for the animals on the ground. Next heading north to Greenland living in a tent filming for the photography tour company Light and Land with Charlie Meeting Dates 2016 Camera Club EXHIBITION at Gold Hill Museum Sat 30 th April Fri 6 th May ****** Thurs. 12 th May Print and PDI Image of the Year Competition Subject: Open Judge: Roy Lambeth Deadline Sunday 8th ****** Thurs. 26 th May AGM Followed by prize giving. Bring your favourite prints to discuss over a drink and nibbles Waite. Followed by filming the mild landscape of the Orkneys, a wonderful archaeological area with standing stones infused with history. Ben loves colour, texture and shapes with visits off to his favourite areas in Western Scotland, only accessible by boat. Ben prefers to explore and communicate with nature and its surrounds rather than photograph classical images. He ended a wonderful evening with images close to his home in Shropshire where his village has managed to purchase and preserve a woodland. We enjoyed your presentation Ben and thank you. Our Annual Photographic Exhibition is now on at Shaftesbury s GOLD HILL MUSEUM till Friday 6 th May. We welcome photographers, tourists and local residents. Our last Competition of the season is on 12 th May and is the Print and PDI of the Year. Members may enter a maximum of 2 prints and 2 PDIs and the deadline is Sunday 8 th May. Images can be ones used in other competitions this year or entirely new images. Upload as usual via the website.

16 The results of the Shuffell Trophy, the Print and PDI of the Year, and the award for the public s favourite image in the exhibition, will all be presented at our AGM on May 26 th. To increase the photographic element of the evening, members are invited to bring along one or two favourite prints. They can be old or new, previously used or never used in competition and any size, mounted or unmounted. Your favourite prints are not necessarily those that have done well in competition, but those (for whatever reason) that give you personal enjoyment or bring back a memory. The business part of the meeting will be commendably brief but we would welcome one or two new committee members: the job is not onerous and new ideas are always welcome. Slightly younger legs and backs wouldn t go amiss but that is not a prerequisite! Nomination lists are on the notice board or speak to a committee member. Charity Picture Frame Sale at 22d Wincombe Business Park in aid of HOPES and HOMES for CHILDREN Fri 6 th Sat 7 th May pm. Clearance Sale with at least 33% going to the charity Richard Squires a photographer of 20 years and chairman of Liskeard Camera Club offers a holiday retreat at his smallholding near Bodmin Moor for likeminded photographers who wish to enjoy the Cornish countryside, landscape and coastline. Daily rate of 40 per night: contact Richard or Julia on / , Coombe, South Hill, Callington. Cornwall PL17 7LT. This came via our website and we thought might be of interest: we have a flyer but no personal knowledge. Shaftesbury Westminster Hospital is still looking for a display of framed Prints in the Hospital. If anyone is interested in displaying their work or even wishing to sell, please contact Babs We have been offered a window of two months from 4th July to 29 th August. p.s. Brian Tarling can lend display frames for your images. Following our Exhibition at Gold Hill Museum we would love member s feed back and ideas on how we can get more members entering their work, what we can do to improve the exhibition, what went wrong (apart from the prints falling down!), what went right and anything else that occurs to you while it is fresh in our memories. Please David, Bill, Helen or info@shaftesburycameraclub.org.uk with your thoughts. Looking ahead in 2016/17 We look forward to welcoming members past and new for our seventh year on Thursday 22nd September, We hope you all have a wonderful summer and enjoy furthering your photographic skills. Our web nearly always has required information, but if anyone has any queries, do please ask. info@shaftesburycameraclub.org.uk Member of Western Counties Photographic Federation + Affiliated to Photographic Alliance of Great Britain
