2 Introduction Light pollution caused by some outdoor lighting, is a major concern for a growing number of cities, states, environmental organizations, and even the Federal Government. The primary concerns are glare, light trespass, and light pollution in the upper hemisphere commonly referred to as "sky glow". Sky glow is the haze or "glow" surrounding cities or heavily populated areas. It is the result of uncontrolled and reflected light being directed into the sky and illuminating dust or other atmospheric particles. Astronomers, certain organizations, and private citizens argue that the increasing sky glow is reducing their ability to view the night skies. Outdoor lighting, when improperly specified and applied, can be a significant factor in increasing the amount of light pollution and sky glow. Most people agree that preserving the darkness of the night sky is a worthy goal. However, safety, security, maintenance costs, the efficient use of energy, and architecture are also important when considering outdoor lighting. The ideal situation is one where all the factors can be considered and balanced to achieve good results in all areas. The Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) has established classifications for outdoor lighting fixtures that can help designers and specifiers consider the amount of light that is wasted into the night sky. These classifications are: Full Cutoff, Cutoff, Semi-Cutoff and Non-Cutoff. The percentage of lamp lumens allowed into the upper hemisphere ranges from 0% with a Full Cutoff rating to unrestricted with a Non-cutoff rating. However, light also reacts with the reflective properties in its surroundings that contribute to light pollution. Therefore, it is not necessarily correct to choose a luminaire based on IES cutoff classification alone. The idea that a Full Cutoff luminaire is always the best choice for preserving the night sky, or that it is the most "Dark Sky Friendly" fixture, is simply not true. When factors such as pole spacing, the total number of poles required, and the typical ground reflectance are considered, the most "Dark Sky Friendly" fixtures often times turn out to be well designed Cutoff or Semi-Cutoff luminaires. At Amerlux Exterior, we manufacture a variety of luminaires in each classification, and many different architectural styles. This brochure highlights only the luminaires that achieve Semi-Cutoff or greater. The important thing to remember is that many factors go into choosing the right fixture for the specific job. Our skilled sales representatives are ready to help you decide which luminaire meets all the criteria that are important to you, the project, and the community Shank Road Pearland, Texas Fax:

5 Although IES cutoff classifications give some indication of how "dark sky friendly" a fixture is, it doesn't tell the whole story. As illustrated in Weighing the Options (page 4), the IES Cutoff Classification does not consider environmental reflectance or overall efficiency of the luminaire, which could lead to adding more poles to meet minimum lighting requirements. Additionally, safety, uniformity, and the ability to adequately illuminate vertical surfaces are not covered by the IES Cutoff classification. Items like these require that the designer look at many factors related to the specific fixture and the project as a whole. The chart below illustrates several key points relevant in the discussion of balancing Dark Sky Friendly fixtures with other criteria for a project. The UWLR (Upward Wasted Light Ratio) is the actual amount of light that is wasted above the 90 degree plane from the luminaire as a whole, not just the percentage of the lamp. Notice that while all Full-Cutoff Luminaires will have a UWLR of 0%, the Cutoff classification has a wide range. Some are very close to 0% (.0663) while another could approach 15% and still be classified as Cutoff. Also while most would want to avoid a large amount of light in the 80 to 90 degree Glare Zone, a higher Maximum Candela Vertical Angle generally means further pole spacing and less energy consumption. The data shown below is just a small sample of all that is available on most fixtures. When careful consideration is given to all important criteria, the suitable pole / luminaire combination can be found. 6 Weighing the Options Full Cutoff Features - Direct light is thrown below the horizontal plane - Efficient target output Actual rendering using AGI32 of theoretical scenario using 12' poles and fixtures of various cutoff classifications. Considerations - Reduced pole spacing, more poles needed to acheive desired output - Increased energy usage and maintenance - May create "hot spots" - Reflected "ground glare" resulting in sky glow - Less uniformity than Cutoff - Low vertical illumination Skyglow Stats. Max: 0.4 Min: 0.1 Avg: 0.25 Skyglow stats. are key illuminance values (measured in footcandles) on a calculation plane located 60ft. above the ground. Cutoff Features - Less than 2.5% lamp lumens above the horizontal plane - Permits wider spacing between poles, resulting in fewer poles and less indirect uplight - Efficient lighting with minimal contribution to light pollution - Limits light tresspass/spillover - Higher vertical illumination than full cutoff Skyglow Stats. Max: 0.3 Min: 0.0 Avg: 0.15 Considerations - Will allow some uplight - May create "hot spots", safety considerations Amerlux Exterior Global Lighting Solutions 5220 Shank Road Pearland, Texas Fax:

7 Semicutoff Features - Less than 5% lamp lumens above the horizontal plane. - Typically mounted at wider spacings, reducing cost in overall power consumption and using fewer poles than other classifications - Higher vertical illuminance for safety, security, and eye comfort - Greater uniformity Skyglow Stats. Max: 0.4 Min: 0.1 Avg: 0.24 Considerations - More uplight than cutoff or full cutoff classifications - Less control of tresspass/spillover than cutoff or full cutoff classifications Non Cutoff Considerations - Glare - Limited or no light control - Highest vertical illumination Skyglow Stats. Max: 0.9 Min: 0.2 Avg: 0.5 Skyglow stats. are key illuminance values (measured in footcandles) on a calculation plane located 60ft. above the ground. 6

8 Semicutoff The is a hydro-formed and brightly polished reflector that utilizes a vertical lamp (base down or base up, depending on the fixture) to achieve a Cutoff or Semi-cutoff classification. The is designed to work with both medium and mogul base sockets. Its' compact size allows it to be an effective system for many smaller fixtures that larger reflectors will not fit in. The optical system provides uniform lighting through a wide range of vertical and horizontal angles, and will not create hot spots directly beneath or surrounding the pole. SLL The SLL is an aluminum reflector that utilizes a vertical lamp with a refractive lens to achieve a Semicutoff classification (Type lll and Type V available). It efficiently minimizes light to the upper hemisphere by reducing wasted light above. The SLL is designed to work with both medium and mogul based sockets. This model is limited to use on the fixture series below: AO28, ARP23, ASR26, D540, D701, D710, D730AO, D730ARP, D750 While maximum vertical candela is at 70 degrees, which allows wide pole spacing, there is very little light approaching the 80 to 90 degree glare zone. The optical system is capable of delivering Type III or V light distribution but actual IES classifications may vary depending on the fixture in which it is installed. Cutoff SLL- The SLL- optical system provides uniform lighting and will not create hot spots directly beneath or surrounding the pole. The SLL- combines the SLL reflector (shown left) with the (above left) to achieve an IES cutoff classification in the available fixtures listed below. It is designed to work with both medium and mogul based sockets. The system utilizes a specular segmented reflector for use with a horizontal lamp to achieve Cutoff classification. There are models designed to work with both medium and mogul base lamps. The use of this reflector is limited to fewer fixtures due to its larger size and lamp position as opposed to the more compact and versatile. The optical system provides uniform lighting through a wide range of vertical and horizontal angles. Maximum vertical candela is between 65 and 70 degrees depending on the reflector. There are models available that can achieve Type II, III, IV, and V horizontal IES classifications in most fixtures. This model is limited to use on the fixture series below: AO28, ARP23, ASR26, D540, D701, D710, D730AO, D730ARP, D750 Typical System Optical Accessory House side shields are available to cutoff all direct light through certain horizontal angles (90 degrees or 180 degrees). House side shields also work together with most optical systems for additional light control. Please consult factory for more information.
