Hogan President, Global Buyers Group, LLC On behalf of Miva Technologies, Gmbh Abstract: Line width and spacing is getting tighter, layer count is going higher, registration is problems are growing. Miva Technologies has developed a series of low cost direct imaging and photoplotting technologies. An overview of how to cost justify direct imaging and/or photoplotting with specific references to new lower cost approaches by Miva Technologies.

2 Change: A constant condition in the circuit fabrication industry The Asia Effect: Lower cost, more available Asian PCBs have placed greater pressures on PCB manufacturers to increase technology levels, move toward lower production quantities per job, and prototyping. Evolving Technology: Finer line width and spacing, higher layer counts and greater registration challenges. Cost Pressure: Inefficiencies in production, sunk costs for tooling, non-value added production steps must be eliminated to remain to remain cost competitive.

3 Production to Prototype Imaging related tooling and associated labor costs are minimal for production scale quantities (>500 pc) or even customer jobs that repeat where phototools are reused. As lot sizes drop into near proto-type volumes the tooling costs including labor and operational time loss becomes a significant cost driver. Good cost accounting for set up and tooling is critical to remaining profitable as the market shifts.

4 Direct Imaging: Primary Drivers Tooling Cost: Phototool production, maintenance and set up. Auto-scaling panel by panel: Direct imaging systems can scale the outer-layer image for each panel. Registration: Direct imaging has superior side to side registration. Operational efficiency: No set up of phototools, artwork punching, operator registration yields Resolution: Direct Imaging can provide up to 32k dpi imaging capability.

18 xdi:theory of Operation Light Engine Light Source: Pulsed LED Emitter Array DMD: Motion coordinated light modulation technology to define the image based on position. Precision Optics: Projects and scales image to provide a precision projected image at selected resolution.

19 xdi: Theory of Operation AB Registration Cores (no holes): Accuracy: 0.3 mil (7.5 μm) Optical Punch Method: Provides simultaneous marking of AB prior to panel loading for an accurate AB reference without edge referencing. Machine Vision: System s imaging camera acquires targets upon imaging AB and allows for calibration factors for improved AB registration. Panels or cores (holes): System acquires hole locations using machine vision and scales on the fly.

Registration: xdi panels have considerably better side A to side B performance. Scaling: The need to scale the outlayer imaging to meet the as built conditions of the panel.
