1 PRESS RELEASE SINGAPORE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Singapore AUCTION SPRING SALE OF SINGAPOREAN ART AND MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ASIAN ART ON 21 MAY 2016 Cheong Soo Pieng, Composition, 1972, mixed media on board, estimate: SGD 120, ,000 Singapore, 6 May Auction is pleased to announce its 2016 Spring Sale of Singaporean Art and Modern and Contemporary Asian Art will take place on 21 May 2016, 7.30pm at the Grand Hyatt Singapore. This season s sale comprises a total of 125 lots by artists from Singapore, Malaysia, China, Indonesia, Vietnam and many more. Altogether, these artworks on sale are expected to fetch an approximate value of SGD million. There will also be the exhibition of selected artworks for public viewing from May at MoCA@Loewen. As 33 Auction s continued commitment to promote the local art, the 2016 Spring Sale will prominently feature a dedicated section with 46 works from celebrated local Singaporean artists, including Cheong Soo Pieng, Chen Wen Hsi, Chua Mia Tee, Tay Bak Koi, Lim Tze Peng and Ng Eng Teng. LOCAL SINGAPORE ARTISTS IN FOCUS Many key figures from the local art scene are represented in our Spring Sale 2016 and the main highlights are rare art pieces seldom seen from Cheong Soo Pieng and Ng Eng Teng. Using mediums which are not usually part of their normal repertoire, this would present a rare opportunity for art collectors to acquire these unique pieces by such important Singaporean artists. Placing emphasis on historically important artists, our Spring Sale prominently features 9 Cultural Medallion winners. Page 1

2 In Composition, Cheong Soo Pieng set himself the challenge of expanding his scope of visual composition by using mixed media on board. Incorporating a circular motif, this abstract metal relief represents forms as Cheong s creative agents and creates an aesthetic sentiment that is both refreshing and familiar at the same time. With Cheong s stature as the most influential painter of the Nanyang art movement, this work can be considered a departure from his normal style and is also a prime example of his versatility and enthusiasm in breaking new grounds with his art. Ng Eng Teng, Portrait of Lady in Blue Dress, , oil on canvas, estimate: SGD 20,000-26,000 Known primarily as a sculptor, Ng Eng Teng brings his artful eye and instinctive sense of interpretation to a medium that he rarely works with, but is equally proficient at oil on canvas. In Portrait of Lady in Blue Dress, Ng presents a woman with a direct gaze into the viewer, with an almost indifferent yet slightly sorrowful air to her presence. It is almost as if Ng is extending an invitation to solitary contemplation and inner reflection. One of the rarer oil pieces by Ng, this painting would be a good addition for art lovers and collectors who wish to expand beyond collecting Ng s sculptures. Tay Bak Koi, Till The Cows Come Home, 1996, oil on canvas, estimate: SGD 40,000-60,000 Till The Cows Come Home illustrates the power of Tay Bak Koi s signature stylized buffaloes as a centrepiece for this artwork, leaving no doubt about Tay s skill in blending fantasy with realism in his paintings. Measuring by cm, this work is also the largest of his buffaloes painting to come to the market in recent time. Applying cool hues for most of the buffaloes, Tay strikes the audience with one lone buffalo of a bold red colour, as if staying true to his rebellious streak. His finesse in giving texture to the buffaloes skin also adds to the dynamic movement of the herd. With this painting, collectors of Tay s art will continue to be enthralled by the lyrical life of buffaloes. Page 2 of 5

3 INDONESIAN MASTERS IN THE LIMELIGHT In our Spring Sale 2016, we also put the spotlight on the Indonesian Masters like Affandi, Hendra Gunawan and Basoeki Abdullah. Put together, these three maestros have had major contributions to the development of modern Indonesian art and left an indelible impact on Indonesia s young artists, their artistic culture and practice, as well as art education. Affandi, Boats by the Seaside, 1984, oil on canvas, estimate: SGD 120, ,000 From fishing boats to the life-giving sun, from village cockfights to poignant self-portraits, Affandi was determined to capture the quintessence of Indonesian life in his paintings. In Boats by the Seaside, Affandi has shown us his inner vision of the bliss of boating life and the simple joy of being out at the seaside. Visually stimulating the viewers with his sense of colours, bold lines and shapes, this painting effuses the joyous and uplifting mood Affandi would have experienced while creating this art piece. Hendra Gunawan, Guerrilla Hero (Pahlawan Gerilja), 1949, oil on canvas, estimate: SGD 40,000-60,000 Hendra Gunawan firmly believed in the political revolution in Indonesia and joined in the political fight with his painting talents. He founded the Pelukis Front (Frontline Painters) in 1945 and actively painted on the frontlines of battles. Hendra Gunawan painted Guerrilla Hero in the same era of the Yogyakarta Battle, an important milestone in Indonesia s history thus highlighting the historical significance of the present work. It reflects a tense battle scene with a guerrilla fighter holding a grenade, waiting for the right moment to make his move. By framing closely on the guerrilla soldier s pose and expression, Gunawan heightens the sense of drama for the viewer, keeping them in suspense over the fate of the soldier and the grenade. Exuding sensuality and fresh youth, The Beauty of Indonesia has Basoeki s artistic stamp all over it. Applying a soft colour palette and an alluring pose to the model, Basoeki has indeed produced the epitome of Indonesian beauty. WALASSE TING: FLOWER THIEF For our Spring Sale 2016, 33 Auction is also proud to present 7 artworks by the illustrious Chinese artist, Walasse Ting, including one rare acrylic on canvas. As a nomad artist, Ting was constantly motivated by beauty and virtue, emotions and the lust for life. Hence, he nicknamed himself The Flower Thief. Solidifying his style with Abstract Expressionism, Ting found critical acclaim with his award of Guggenheim Fellowship for Drawing and has had his artworks collected by Metropolitan Museum of Art, Tate Modern, Guggenheim Museum, Musée Guimet and the Shanghai Art Museum. With Kristel in Bedroom, Walasse Ting makes full use of the canvas s huge space to create a visual feast for the eyes. The colour splatter draws the audience in, while Kristel further seduces with her rich red hair and passionate light in her eyes. This rare acrylic on canvas evidently shows Ting s brilliance in portraying sensuality with undertones of languorous yearning and will appeal to those who identify with Ting s vision of the feminine allure.
