Ingram Road, Gillingham, Kent, ME7 1SJ Tel Newsletter Week Ending: 03/11/2017 About our artists Dear Parents, as you are aware since the beginning of this academic year all of our classes have been named after famous artists. The reason for this is to raise awareness of different forms of art and to understand a little about the incredible artwork they have created. Research studies measuring creative thinking, critical thinking, problem solving and reasoning all find these functions increase and improve when arts education is added to the curriculum. Please find below a sample of work the children have completed about their class artist and a little information about the artist that the children have learnt when beginning to study them. The children will continue their artist work throughout the year. We are also endeavouring over the next 18 months to gain the Artsmark (gold of course), for Saxon Way. If we have any parents who are budding artists and would like to support the development of art in school, please sign up for our volunteer team and share your skills for the benefit of the children. Nursery- Rousseau Nursery have taken the name Rousseau, after the famous artist Henri Julien Felix Rousseau. Rousseau was a self-taught genius whose works are of high artistic quality. Rousseau claimed that his teacher for his art work was nature and whilst he received some support and advice from two established academic painters, enjoyed painting and taught himself the skills of art. Nursery learnt that their name sake had thought about what he wanted to be good at because of what he liked doing. We painted tigers for our class display with everyone talking about what they liked to do. FS2- Monet Claude Monet is a famous French Impressionist painter. He is most well-known for his paintings of his gardens and lily ponds in Giverny. The children learned different art techniques to paint like him and we wrote about what we had learned about him. Sophia wrote that Monet painted lily pads and a bridge. Jobie wrote that Monet painted his garden., and Xian wrote that Monet painted flowers and water.

FS2- Kandinsky Wassily Kandinsky was a very well-known abstract artist. Kandinsky used gorgeous colours and he painted pure design, concentrating on colour and design. He felt the colours and design had meaning in themselves which is a very important concept in introducing Kandinsky for children. Concentric Circles is one of Kandinsky s most recognizable work and we wanted to create our own art work. We used a few different sized round objects to create the effect. Bowen wrote I am painting circles, because I want to be like Kandinksy! Samir wrote The famous Kandinsky! He painted colourful circles! Sapphire said I am actually learning how to paint. I am still learning! Riley said I like to cover it! Like a blanket. We were so enthusiastic and interested in painting Kandinsky circles that we even decided to make our own Kandinsky tree in our classroom. Year 1- Cezanne Our class is named after the famous painter Paul Cezanne. Cezanne favoured painting landscapes and fruit, so we recreated some of his work by using oil pastels to draw our favourite fruits. Year 1- Dali In Year 1 Dali we have been looking at the artist that our class is named after. We looked at many different paintings and as a class decided to recreate one of his most famous pieces of art Ship with Butterfly Sails. Year 2- Matisse Henri Matisse was a French artist. He was born in 1689 and died at the age of 85. Matisse used cut-out shapes, pure colours and strong patterns in his pictures. Art pictures that are made by cutting out specific shapes and sticking them onto paper or a board are called montages. We worked as a class to make a strip of wall paper in the style on Henri Matisse.

Year 2- Picasso Our class is called Picasso Class after the famous artist. He went to a special artist school. It was a famous school. He was born over 100 years ago. He painted people using cubism. By Alfie We are called Picasso Class and his first name was Pablo. His school was a famous school. He was born in Spain over 100 years ago. His faces are cubism. He uses blue colours for sad and bright colours for happy. By Leon Year 3 Rembrandt We are named after Rembrandt van Rijn. Rembrandt had a way of capturing a person's personality and emotion on the canvas. In some of his paintings it feels as if the person in the painting is looking directly at you. In his later years he became more confident. He also used light and shadow to create a mood. We took inspiration from this and created portraits without pencils, using only a rubber to pick out the key features of the faces we were trying to capture. The most famous painting by Rembrandt is the Night Watch. It was a large portrait (over 14 feet long and nearly 12 feet tall) of Captain Banning Cocq and seventeen of his militiamen. Year 3- DaVinci Da Vinci class have been learning about the life and works of Leonardo da Vinci, the renaissance artist. We have created fact files, portraits inspired by the Mona Lisa and put ourselves as the Vitruvian man.

Year 4 Van Gogh Year 4 have chosen (Vincent) van Gogh as their class name. They have examined his work and have discovered how his painting style changed over time. Initially his drawings and paintings were very dark and often quite gloomy to look at but he was so enthused by the colour that he saw around him and by the paintings produced by other current artists that he began to use more vibrant colours to produce the many famous paintings that he better known for today. Van Gogh has inspired us to believe that we all have control over what we do and that it is possible to change and take risks. Year 5-Khadija (July30, June 14, 2017) A Poem about our artist by Jayden Walker When she smiled the room lit up, She was young and poor, Famous for her art. Friends loved her, with all their heart. It was her time to shine, But she wasn t fine. Khadija died in a fire. How could you have died? You were only twenty five. Year 6- O Keefe (November 15, March 6, 1986) Georgia O'Keeffe was an American Artist. She was one of the first women artists to become well known and she helped pave the way for other women artists. She was one of America's most important modern artists and her works are well known and loved. She is most famous for her drawings and paintings of flowers from a close-up range.

100% ATTENDANCE INCENTIVES This academic year we will be looking at alternative ways of celebrating 100% attendance and excellent punctuality. Children who have achieved 100% attendance for Term 1 will each receive a skipping rope to encourage them to get outdoors and keep fit. A colouring sheet will be given out to all children for Term 2. For every day that your child attends school on time, they are to colour in the relevant box. If at the end of term all the boxes are coloured in, the sheets should be handed back in to school so that prizes can be awarded. SKIPPING WORKSHOP We will be holding a free Skipping Workshop in school on Thursday 23rd November for Years 1 6, which will be about motivating children to achieve whilst encouraging them to exercise. Blueberries will be offered to children afterwards to encourage Healthy Eating. SCHOOL ENTRANCES On our CCTV cameras we have noticed cars using the driveway to drop children off at school in the morning. The signs clearly state that this is a no drop off zone. Please do not park or stop on the yellow lines outside of the school. This needs to be kept clear for emergency vehicles at all times. Thanks for your understanding. 6 POPPY APPEAL 2017 The Royal British Legion is asking the nation to Rethink Remembrance by recognising the sacrifices made by the Armed Forces community, past and present. By wearing a poppy, you aren t just remembering the fallen: you re supporting a new generation of veterans and Service personnel that need our support. We are now selling poppies for 20p each, or you can buy other merchandise, details and prices are below. Children can make purchases during the first morning break from the school office, or at lunchtimes. Please ensure that children keep wrist slap bands in their bags for home time. CHILDREN IN NEED 2017 We will be celebrating Children In Need on Friday 17 th November. This will be a non-uniform day and children will be required to wear spots. If children want to create their own spotty outfit there will be prizes throughout the day for the best home-made outfit. There will be a donation of 1 if children wish to take part in the non-uniform day. The staff will also be fundraising by taking part in the Great Saxon Way Bake Off for Children In Need, with all cakes being sold after school outside reception. If children or parents wish to donate cakes to the fundraising bake sale we would be very appreciative as we want to make this a successful Children In Need fundraiser.

Bonfire Night Safety As we approach Guy Fawkes night Medway Council & Kent Fire and Rescue would very much like to help you stay safe from the potential dangers of fireworks and bonfires. We want everyone to really enjoy themselves during what should be a great night. The only way that will happen however, is if everyone stays safe. It s no fun when the illegal fireworks you ve bought blow up in your face, it s no fun sitting in hospital, it s no fun being scarred for life and it s no fun if your family and friends are injured. If you must buy your own fireworks, only do so from reputable dealers, otherwise it could end in tragedy. Follow the Firework Code and the advice on each firework. The most common injuries are to hands, wrists and eyes and are often caused by sparklers. Sparklers should be held at arm s length and away from other people. Never give sparklers to children under 5 years of age and have a bucket of water handy to put the used sparklers in. Top tips for staying safe: 1. Only buy fireworks marked BS 7114 from reputable suppliers. 2. Keep fireworks in a closed box. 3. Follow the instructions on each firework carefully. 4. An adult should light them at arm s length using a suitable taper. 5. Everyone stand well back the minimum distance will be on the firework 6. Never go back to a lit firework. 7. Never put fireworks in your pocket. 8. Never throw fireworks. 9. Light sparklers one at a time and wear gloves. There is information on public firework displays, illegal fireworks and the firework code on the Medway council website; If we work together we can hopefully reduce the number of injuries and incidents and help everyone enjoy a safe Guy Fawkes Night.
