1 GRADE 2 CURRICULUM COMPANION - STANDARDS PANOPLY SCHOOL DAYS 2015 ~ STUDENT ART TENT Description of Panoply Experience: Students will visit Panoply s Student Art Tent to see and analyze artwork from local schools. While visiting the Student Art Tent, students will participate in an observational scavenger hunt where they will analyze and collect information about the art they observe. Alabama College and Career Ready English Language Arts Standards supported by this experience: ELA RF.2.3: Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. W.2.22: Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply reasons that support that opinion, use linking words (e.g., because, and, also) to connect opinion and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or section. SL.3.4: Tell a story or recount an experience with appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details, speaking audibly in coherent sentences. L.2.4e: Use glossaries and beginning dictionaries, both print and digital, to determine or clarify the meaning of words and phrases. L.2.5a: Identify real-life connections between words and their use (e.g., describe foods that are spicy or juicy). Alabama College and Career Ready Math Standards supported by this experience: CCSS.Math.Content.2.MD.10: Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a data set with up to four categories. Solve simple put-together, takeapart, and compare problems using information presented in the bar graph. Alabama State Department of Education Course of Study in Visual Arts Education supported by this experience: Explain similarities and differences in works of art, including color schemes, symmetrical balance, and geometric and organic shapes. Describe the media technique used in a specific work of art. Relate moods, feelings, and emotions generated by a work of art to life experiences. 2 GRADE 2 CURRICULUM COMPANION - ACTIVITIES PANOPLY SCHOOL DAYS 2015 ~ STUDENT ART TENT ACTIVITY ONE (BEFORE VISITING PANOPLY SCHOOL DAYS) ART VOCABULARY Description of Panoply Experience: Students will visit Panoply s Student Art Tent to see and analyze artwork from local schools. While visiting the Student Art Tent, students will participate in an observational scavenger hunt where they will analyze and collect information about the art they observe. Description of Activity: Students will learn art related vocabulary words in order to better understand and evaluate what they observe in the Student Art Tent. When to do this Activity: Within a day or two BEFORE attending Panoply School Days. Objective: Students will learn art related vocabulary words and do a matching activity. Materials: Vocabulary Page*, Matching Activity Worksheet*, pencils (1 each per student) Procedure: 1. Distribute Vocabulary Page and review with students. Read the vocabulary words aloud with students by asking students to take turns reading each one aloud. Discuss any words with which they may need additional help. 2. Distribute the Matching Activity Worksheet and ask students to complete the worksheet. 3. While visiting the Student Art Tent, students will participate in an observational scavenger hunt where they will analyze and collect information about the art they observe. Description of Activity: Students will compare works of art that they observe at the Panoply Student Art Tent. When to do this Activity: Within a day or two BEFORE attending Panoply School Days. Objective: Students will learn how to analyze different works of art relating to colors, shapes, and emotions. Materials: Exploring Art Worksheets* and pencils Procedure: 1. Distribute Exploring Art Worksheets 2. Ask students to compare the works of art on the page (they can break into groups to talk about the art; or they can write words describing what they see) 3. Ask the following questions: a. How are the pieces of art different from each other? Observe things such as landscapes and people, what they are wearing, the expression on their faces. b. What do you think the artist used to create each of the pieces (example: paint, pencil, charcoal, etc.)? c. What shapes do you see in the art? How do the colors in each piece compare to each other? d. Can you tell what the artist was feeling when he/she created the artwork? What do you feel when you see it? e. Do you think this art would feel smooth or rough? What is the texture? 4. While visiting the Student Art Tent, students will participate in an observational scavenger hunt where they will analyze and collect information about the art they observe. Description of Activity: Students will collect data regarding what they see in the Student Art Tent. When to do this Activity: DURING your visit to the Panoply Student Art Tent at Panoply School Days. Objective: Students will observe the art and categorize what they see. Materials: Data Collection Worksheets*, pencil (1 per student) Procedure: 1. Distribute the Data Collection Worksheets to students. You can choose to assign one worksheet to a pair of students so they can work together. You can also assign one question on one worksheet to one or two students so they are not collecting the same data. 2. Ask students to walk through the tent and count how many pieces of art they observe for their assigned characteristic. 3. While visiting the Student Art Tent, students will participate in an observational scavenger hunt where they will analyze and collect information about the art they observe. Description of Activity: Students will select their favorite work of art in the Student Art Tent. When to do this Activity: DURING your visit to the Panoply Student Art Tent at Panoply School Days. Objective: Students will observe and select their favorite work of art in the Student Art Tent. Materials: Camera (teacher s), Favorite Art Worksheet* (1/2 page size) and pencil (1 per student) Procedure: 1. Visit the Student Art Tent. 2. Ask students to pick their favorite piece of art. If possible, take a picture of the art and the student with the art. 3. Ask students to write down why this is their favorite piece of art. If they need assistance ask them to think about their emotions, the colors, or the shapes in the art that they like. Does it remind them of something? Why do they like this piece of art? 4. While visiting the Student Art Tent, students will participate in an observational scavenger hunt where they will analyze and collect information about the art they observe. Description of Activity: Students will analyze and categorize the data they collected from the Student Art Tent When to do this Activity: AFTER your visit to the Student Art Tent at Panoply School Days. Objective: Students will create bar graphs to categorize and compare the types of art observed in the Student Art Tent. Materials: Data Collection Worksheets from Activity Three, Bar Graph Worksheets*, crayons of different colors Procedure: 1. Distribute Bar Graph Worksheet and crayons to each student. 2. As a class, go through each piece of data collected and ask students to color their charts at the appropriate places to categorize what they have found. 3. While visiting the Student Art Tent, students will participate in an observational scavenger hunt where they will analyze and collect information about the art they observe. Description of Activity: Students will compare works of art that they observed at the Panoply Student Art Tent. When to do this Activity: AFTER your visit to the Student Art Tent at Panoply School Days. Objective: Students will write a paragraph to describe their favorite work of art from the Student Art Tent. Materials: Pictures and Favorite Art Worksheet from Activity Four of each student s favorite piece of art, lined paper, pencil. Procedure: 1. Ask students to take a look at their chosen favorite work of art in the Student Art Tent and think about what the artist was feeling, what did the artist use to create it, what type of art is it, what colors are used. 2. Students should use their notes from the day of the visit to help them remember why they chose that piece of art. 3. Students should write a paragraph about their favorite work of art. 4. While visiting the Student Art Tent, students will participate in an observational scavenger hunt where they will analyze and collect information about the art they observe. Description of Activity: Students will create their own artwork and present what they created. When to do this Activity: AFTER your visit to the Student Art Tent at Panoply School Days. Objective: Students will use their own creativity and inspiration from the Student Art Tent in creating works of art and will talk about their art to the class. Materials: Paper, crayons, markers, paint, scissors (any art supplies) Procedure: 1. Ask students to create their own work of art. Remind them to think about colors, shapes, emotions as they create their artwork. 2. Ask students to present their artwork to the class, or in smaller groups. Portrait A work of art created to show a person or group of people, usually focusing on the face. Landscape A drawing or painting that shows outdoor scenery such as trees, lakes, mountains and fields. Life Scene A work of art showing action or an activity by people. Still -Life A work of art showing an arrangement of objects that cannot move on their own, such as fruit or flowers. Abstract - A style of art that does not look realistic. Usually has bright colors, lines and shapes. Work of Art A creative product of the imagination. Artist A person who creates a work of art.
