1 The Featured Artist: Depy Adams Depy is a North Carolina native with a BFA and M Ed from the art department of UNC- Greensboro. She s lived and painted in Amsterdam, Netherlands and then in Tucson AZ before moving to Albuquerque NM in The Southwest has been an inspiration for her and its scenery continues to be a subject of many of her plein air and studio paintings. She also enjoys painting still life and figurative work. Her paintings are representational and involve places, things, and people from her personal experiences. She works in oils, pastels, transparent watercolors and gouache and determines the medium which best conveys the mood she wants to impart to each painting. She chooses the softness of pastel, the strong visible brushwork of oils, or the crispness of watercolor and gouache to determine which will give the look she wants to convey to the viewer. She is careful to retain freshness and clarity of form no matter which choice is used. V O L U M E 1 3, I S S U E 6 RGAA MEETING Saturday, June 16th 10:00 AM (Presbyterian Moon & Academy) J U N E, Demonstrator: Michelle Chrisman Michelle Chrisman, noted Taos artist and teacher, will be our guest for the June RGAA meeting. She will be demonstrating with oils and palette knife. In her own words: "I just got back from a week long workshop in Scottsdale with Camille Przewodek on colorist outdoor light theory - and it has had a huge impact on my work. I am excited to share this with other painters!" She has entitled her talk as: Capturing the Effect of Outdoor Light with Spectrum Color - A Whole New World Beyond Value Painting!" Diane Walton Reitz had been awarded the Merit Award and has work published in "The Richeson 75 International" Small Works 2012 Book of Art Work, published by the Richeson School of Art and Gallery. Also, she was awarded the First Place Award by the New Mexico Orchid Guild, at the recent Orchid Ole' Exhibition at the Albuquerque Bio Park " Orchids Ole' 2012, for her painting entitled "Ancient Dance." Jeff Potter was awarded second place in DRAWING for his pastel painting "Mount Cochetopa Storm" in the 27th annual Texas & Neighbors Regional Exhibition in Irving, TX. ALSO He had two pastel paintings accepted in the 10th "Gateway to Imagination" national juried exhibition in Farmington, NM and won second place for his painting Powell Point and the Blues. The show runs through July 14 at the Farmington Museum. 2 Page 2 The PALETTE Rio Grande Art Association ART SEE/ ART SPEAK Stone Age people communicated by means of body language - gestures, facial expressions, movements of their bodies, and etc., when they could see and converse with one another. The problem was whenever they were too far away to see one another, they could no longer communicate. Another troublesome thing was when it was dark or at night, any distance wiped out body language. There had to be a speaker and a listener present at the same time for thought to be passed. It was about then the wise ones in a stone age tribe discovered that painting pictures and making special images eliminated the need for message sender and message receiver to be present in the same place at the same time for thoughts to be transmitted. Mark makers worked such magic that these prehistoric images still are viewed with awe today and often you hear these artists are said to have been blessed with talent or gifted. Today in the modern world, the artist and viewer of the art being at the same place at the same time has long vanished; but there is still something magical about both the painter who communicates his thoughts, energy, and mood onto the canvas, and the viewer who feels those same emotions in a vicarious way when looking at the painting. Often TV viewers or movie patrons react in this same fashion. It all goes back to body language and our human feelings. Size is one of the first ways the artist can communicate because the size of the painting requires the viewer to stay at a certain distance from the work. For example a 5 x 7 inch painting requires the viewer to move close enough to see what is depicted; whereas an artist who paints a 55 x 72 inch painting tells the viewer to step back so that the viewer's eyes can see the whole painting at one glance. This is from the viewer's side. From the artist's side a tiny painting means the artist wants the viewer to move in as close as possible so the viewer can be awe struck at the artist's skill at meticulous detail. With huge paintings the artist is telling the viewer to admire his vast skill and impressiveness of the subject depicted. The next thing the artist tells the viewer to do is to compare sizes of things to one another are the sizes normal, or are the proportions a bit off. Feet of peasants often are larger than normal... a dancer's legs a bit too long, and the necks of noble lords & ladies thinner and longer than commoners. The artist is communicating loud and clear. What do dominant directions, types of lines, colors and values tell you? Artists use your eyes to look and your mind's eye to help you express your thoughts to viewers. Viewers... shapes, space, colors lines and values effect you! Think about art elements and their effect on you and then the duplication of objects seen in nature. 3 Rio Grande Art Association The PALETTE Page 3 RGAA June 3 rd 2012 Board Meeting Minutes submitted by Diane Buster Present: Fred Yost, Depy Adams, Toni Lay, Toni Black, Rex Barron, Ann Peterson, Cecelia McRoberts, Diane Buster and guest Hank Schuyler. reminder has gone out to membership regarding Johnsons Gallery show opportunity. Encantada Update: Some volunteer positions still need to be filled, but there is still time. Call for artists websites will be investigated and utilized. Middle of June reminders will go out for prizes. We have received already award guarantees from the pastel and plein air painters societies and the New Mexico Art League. Last year s show brought $1300 in entry fees. Goal this year is $2000. Hank Schuyler presentation and discussion: Hank s background is in branding and marketing research. For a nonprofit organization like RGAA, revisiting our mission statement is a way to evaluate our current situation. Hank Schuyler would be happy to help design a survey of current and past members of how RGAA is meeting its goals to serve membership. Two categories of questions would include questions that identify who our members are which then prompted questions about how RGAA is or is not addressing their needs. Another area Hank could help us in is with idea generation. This session s generated goals and ideas would be available for future Boards and the ongoing process of meeting the needs of our membership. Discussion: How do we build on Frieda s and MJ s work to record our institutional history? How do we best help the treasurer s position to meet tax record requirements and pass on bookkeeping requirements? Would we benefit by acquiring a computer and installing software like QuickBooks? How do we create a better pool of volunteers for the organization? What kind of incentives or rewards might work to thank volunteers? Do we need to create an overlap of board member elections for example having the vice-president become the next year s president? How do we utilize our website to best advantage? Should we have a RGAA address for surveys etc.? Would a password protected portion of the website help to conduct business. Actions Taken: To promote volunteers to hold offices, the Board passed a motion to provide one year s free membership to those volunteering to hold the offices of President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer to take effect starting in To assess our current successes and failures, the Board passed a motion to conduct an online survey of members and past members in September contingent on having a dedicated RGAA address. The survey will be in a PDF format. Next Board meeting to continue the above discussion is June 27 th at Depy Adam s home.

4 Page 4 The PALETTE Rio Grande Art Association RGAA SHOWING AT JOHNSONS OF MADRID GALLERIES 2843 HIGHWAY 14 MADRID, NEW MEXICO July 7TH THROUGH July 29th GAL- LERY OWNERS, DIANA AND MEL JOHNSON OPENING RECEPTION: SATURDAY, July 7th, 3:00-5:00 (Johnsons requests refreshments for the opening, so there will probably be a sign-up) RGAA has arranged with Johnsons of Madrid for a one month non-juried show of members work. Members can show a maximum of three framed or gallery wrapped paintings. Each artist s work will be grouped and hung vertically with 56 as the eye level midpoint of the display. The fee for hanging of a $1 an inch is based on the longest horizontal measurement of your framed or gallery wrapped work plus three inches. For example, if your largest horizontal measurement is 33, cost would be figured on (33+3 or 36 ). Your cost for hanging would be $36. Johnsons charges a 50/50% commission. If a work sells, Johnsons will mail you 50% of the selling price plus the hanging fee. For example if your fee was $36 and your painting was $500, you would receive a check for 50%, $250 plus the $36, or $286. Members will be responsible for delivering and picking up work. Below is information you ll need if you re interested in showing. Intention to show: Members need to contact Diane Buster at diane_buster_1@msn.com by June 16th with their intention to show work. Include the following in that 1. Contact Information: Your name, address, mailing address, phone number(s) 2. Number of paintings and label information for each painting, (maximum three) List the following for each painting Example label Title of Painting Eagles Nest Artist Name as you want it on label Diane Buster Dimensions Medium 24x24 oil Price $1, Confirmation of payment: The amount of the check and check number made out to Johnsons of Madrid. Fees for hanging will be due to Ann Peterson by June 16th. Make checks to Johnsons of Madrid and mail to Ann Peterson, 3942 Villa Way SE, Rio Rancho *Note: June 16th is our monthly meeting and all information can be given to Diane and Ann at the meeting. Delivery and Pick-up Members showing are responsible for their own delivery and pick-up. Paintings need to be delivered to Johnsons between Tuesday and Wednesday, July3rd and 4th. Hanging will be Thursday, July 5th. Paintings need to be picked-up between Tuesday and Wednesday, July 31st and August 1st. *Note: Johnsons is closed Mondays. Call the gallery if you need to deliver or pick up on Monday. Be sure to send invitations to friends and to potential buyers to attend!
