1 Museum of Fine Arts, Houston Field Trip Worksheet Essay Arts 1301 / Art Appreciation Name: Spring 2015 / Instructor: J. Campbell Visit the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston near Hermann Park and the Medical Center. For directions, maps, parking information, hours of operation go to Plan for a minimum minute visit. The purpose of this fieldtrip is to allow you to view original works of art up close and to train you to examine details with a critical eye. Check the online syllabus for the fieldtrip and subsequent due date. The original worksheet along with your short essay, images and self portrait must be submitted at the start of the class period as noted on the Bookmark. No Late Submissions (Hard Copy Only) No Drop Box No submissions. Each component of this worksheet must be completed and submitted on time to receive credit. Extra credit does not substitute for this graded component. Special Exhibition: Europe Permanent Collection Law Building Upper Level Visit this special exhibition and select two works of art that capture your curiosity that may be perplexing or inexplicable at first glance. Antiquities: Greek / Roman / Near East / Egyptian Beck Building Lower & Upper Levels Visit this arrangement of multiple galleries and select two works of art that focus on the human, hybrid or animal figures. Permanent Exhibition: European Galleries (16 th- 20 th Centuries) Beck Building Upper Level Visit this arrangement of multiple galleries and select two works of art that represent specific genres. Sculpture Garden: Self Portrait with Masterwork General Admission to the MFAH is free to students with assignments and a valid student id card Tuesdays through Sundays. 5 Art Work # 6 from the European Galleries Choose a work of art that represent a religious narrative or a formal portrait. audio tour or doing any background research Attach a photo (if permitted) or a sketch. Art Work # 7 > Self Portrait with Masterwork Compose an unusual self portrait with one or many of the sculptures in the Noguchi Sculpture Garden across the street from the Law Building. Attach 3 different images and decide the 1 of the 3 that is most aesthetically pleasing. The images may be in black and white or colour. Important Note: Please do not touch or climb on the sculptures.
6 Summary Statement This concise essay should focus on three works of art that were most memorable from your visit to the MFAH. Compose a thoughtful or thought provoking insight into your museum visit. Use proper grammar, spelling, transitions and compose your response in paragraph format. The Summary Statement should include an introduction, body and conclusion. You may note your impressions of the space and placement of the artworks, the reason you were drawn in to examine each work of art as well as your deductions on the significance or meaning of each work of art. Consider whether or not the works of art you have chosen contain narrative merit pertinent to the social, political or religious events linked to their creation. Note any significant body language, gaze, use of colour, compositional balance or any other cues that may hint at the deeper meaning of each work of art. This response should be in your own voice, authentic to your initial response whether positive, negative or indifferent. The statement should solely express your opinions, deductions, observations or criticisms. Rev 1/18/15
