2 Abstracted Norfolk Contemporary Art Society Mannington Hall Summer 2017 COVER Control Panel III Photograph and print 42x60cm Reality, on passing into art, is inevitably abstracted from itself; themes, colours and compositions are no more than an abstraction of a previous thought, an intention or an emotion. An artwork places us in a room abstracted from the world, the world from which the work has emerged. My purpose was to combine artists of different trends in a moment of maturity; pieces that the public already know sharing space with others less well known, unexpected, some almost underground, however remote they might look. And to invite reflection. Dr Helena Golanó Reality, on passing into art, is inevitably Norfolk Contemporary Art Society (ncas), founded in 1956, is a charitable association that promotes the interests of contemporary art in Norfolk. Amongst a variety of activities, which include a regular series of lectures, organised visits and exhibitions, the society also welcomes opportunities to work in partnership with other organisations. This exhibition, curated by ncas member, Helena Golanó, is an opportunity for the society to collaborate with Lord and Lady Walpole who are generously providing facilities within the grounds of Mannington Hall. The exhibition brings together five artists Martin Battye,, Rose Davies, Bridget Heriz and Rupert Mallin in Abstracted. Further details, regarding this exhibition, are available from For information about ncas visit Title unknown Size 32x26cm Martin Battye For a while my paintings have been underpinned by a dominant concern for colour, it s working and it s interactions. Often a disrupted geometry is the vehicle to carry the wobbling structure which may be a metaphor or represent an equivalence to perception and experience lived behind the flatness of two dimensional screens. Smart phones and tablets, computers and TVs, even windscreens, all serve to cut us off from primary sensation. Title unknown Size 27x24cm Size 120x100cm
3 Sheding Wood and metal construct 16x16cm Srian III Carbon steel 140x60x40cm BELOW Grata Bronze on steel plinth 143x51x29cm Recently, bringing collage out of my sketchbooks and into the limelight allowed me to rekindle a long-held interest in abstraction. Play and composition are very important in my work. I toy with layout; meticulously placing paper elements that I cut randomly from magazines, along with other collected ephemera and painted papers. In this way, I am celebrating the ordinary, with judicious arrangement. I realise focussing on conceptual formalities is affording me an enormous sense of freedom, from which comes great joy. Rose H Davies My sculptures are based on responses to feelings and thoughts around religion, oppression and restriction by communication, through the physicality of power and weight with the cold force of steel and bronze. Two of the pieces are figurative and personal and can be interpreted by the viewer in a variety of ways. The weight and density of the bronze evokes darkness, a darkness open by the negative space of light, an expression of freedom and hope. Control Panel I Photograph and print 42x60cm Settlement III Hand block print, acrylic ink 30x42cm
4 Inanna (Sumerian Queen of Heaven) Wood and metal rod, x14x11cm Head Variety of woods, x35x22cm Collection Print collage on paper 39x31cm Bridget Heriz Bridget Heriz trained at Goldsmiths College and Ravensbourne College of Art and Design, after which she returned to Suffolk to work at Clock House Fine Art Studios. She moved to Great Yarmouth in A sculptor who has used a variety of methods and materials, both traditional and contemporary, to develop a highly individual approach to figurative sculpture that is earthy and spirited. Her work has been described as elemental, with vision and subjects that are perhaps timeless. The Furies (Erinyes) Bronze (ed.1/6), 2001 Alecto (The Pursuer) striding 42x42x23cm Megaera (The Envious One) running 41x27x20cm Tisiphone (The Avenger) leaping 39.5x43x37cm Rupert Mallin I work with found objects in my work, both as materials and as tools in painting, printing and collage. With a background in poetry, I enjoy the collisions between the concrete and the imagined, where completed works are punctuation marks in an evolving process of abstract expression. Thanks also to the curator, Helena Golanó, for her vision and expertise and to Selwyn Taylor and Rachel Allan for the design and production of the catalogue.
