4 Prehistoric Art The earliest works of art were in the Paleolithic Age. In 1940 in France, some young boys went into a cave looking for their dog. They followed their dog to a remote chamber of the cave where they discovered beautiful works of cave art. Early man used the curves and shape of the cave walls to create realistic looking animals. This is similar to seeing animal shapes in the clouds, only being able to color them in. An excellent project for children is to allow them to use sandpaper or shingles and crayons or oil pastels and create a cave painting. It will be wonderful to see the animals take shape. Use branches or twigs and beat the ends into brushes. Blueberries or other natural bemes can also be used as paint.
5 Introduction Teaching: History Through Art is a good idea for a group or family activity. As you make the projects suggested with the works of art, you will have great props to show and give a presentation on history. In various statistics, it has been shown that children learn more when they actually give a presentation of their knowledge to others --- active learning. This is a great opportunity for them to instruct and have memorable projects depicting historic events. Photographs can be taken of the projects, and a book can be made of great moments in history up to the Renaissance. The time line in the back of the book should be filled in by students giving them a better understanding of history. Other famous events not in this book can be added to the time line, and students can think of their own projects that tie in with the event or famous person. There is a fascinating study I want to recommend to go along with this book. It is Diana Waring s What in the World s Going on Here- A Jude0 Christian Primer of World History. Children can research and discover more facts about each lesson, with the ultimate goal of presenting history in a fascinating way. 6 Petrogl yphs and Hieroglyphics A symbol is something that represents something else. In ancient history, the earliest forms of writing were petrogl yph and hieroglyphics. Early civilizations used pictures to tell a story or communicate something on cave or stone walls. In archaeology, a petroglyph is a carving or line drawing on rock, especially made by a prehistoric people. Hieroglyphics are pictures or symbols representing words used by the Egyptians and other ancient peoples used in place of alphabet letters. In early American classrooms, a rebus was very popular. What is a rebus? It is a puzzle using pictures that taught independent thinking, logic and reason. A good idea is to first look at these samples of ancient writing. Can you guess what these symbols mean? There are some symbols that scientist are not even sure of the meaning today. Write a page in hieroglyphics and then go to a friend and let them translate what you have written
