2 Qui si fa quel che si sa e si sa quel che si fa. Demetz Here we do what we know and we know what we do.

3 For centuries marble stone or bronze castings have been used to create timeless masterpieces of art, such as Michelangelo Buonarotti s Pietá during the Renaissance or the ecclesiastical art by Gianlorenzo Bernini during the Baroque period later on. These materials are one of the most durable forms of art created by man. The Demetz Art Studio has perfected its own long tradition in using these fine materials to create beautiful statues for outdoor placement. Years ago Mr. Ivo Demetz created another very durable, yet cost effective material for outdoor statues or monuments: fiberglass and polyester resin. It can be found throughout our standard collection, but can also be used to create custom statues, based upon your request. Kindly contact your local church goods dealer for more information about these beautiful materials that will last forever and will amaze you in its beauty time after time. copyright Demetz Art Studio All rights reserved 3

4 The Demetz Art Studio uses only the best quality marble from the quarries of Tuscany ITALY: bianco puro or bianco di Carrara. In 1517 Michelangelo found the cava di Seravezza on the mountain Altissimo (1.589 m). From here he took big blocks to create the front panels for the Church of S. Lorenzo in Florence. This type of marble is practically impervious to the elements. 4

5 MARBLE SCULPTURES Custom drawn sketch Moquette = bozzetto Model in scale on the solid marble block We at Demetz Art Studio create fine marble works from a model in scale or a maquette (bozzetto). To carve directly the marble without a model in scale may be cheaper in cost, but the final result is that often the figure is not correctly in proportion and is badly done. copyright Demetz Art Studio All rights reserved 5

6 MARBLE SCULPTURES The stone carving tools used nowadays have not changed much from Michelangelo s time. First the rough stone is hammered with a pitching hammer, then sculpted with special pointing tools and files. 6

12 BRONZE OUTDOOR SCULPTURES Bronze castings are probably the most durable art form in existence. Bronze is an excellent material for outdoor use, because it weathers well and ages gracefully. The ancient Romans followed the Greeks in the tradition of casting larger bronze statues by using the so called lost wax technique. Since then, bronze has become and remained an important medium used for fine art. 12

16 LIFE-SIZE STATIONS OF THE CROSS For the New Jubilee the Demetz Art Studio started to create a life-size set of Stations of the Cross, commissioned by Cardinal Aponte for a new shrine in San Juan, Puerto Rico. USA. This unique project reproduces all fourteen Stations of the Cross with life-size figures (6 ft = 1,8 m), all cast in bronze using the lost wax process, which means that no model and no mould is kept. This makes this set of Stations a truly unique monument to Christianity. Our artists spent two years working on these life-size models. Each full size clay model was photographed for the client s approval before work started on the casting process. Cardinal Aponte himself came to inspect the first four Stations and was full of praise for the artists at the Demetz Art Studio. Every six months four Stations of the Cross were shipped to Puerto Rico by ocean freight. The Stations line up the Via Dolorosa to the Sanctuary which has been blessed by Pope John Paul II. 16

20 BRONZE OUTDOOR SCULPTURES Bronze casting involves many steps and takes several months to complete properly. A clay original full size sculpture is made. This is used to form a wax figure, a perfect copy of the original. 20

21 The melted bronze is poured through an opening in the cast and spreads through the interior, filling the spaces left by the wax. The bronze then cools and solidifies taking its final shape. Mod. 100/63 for NY, USA copyright Demetz Art Studio All rights reserved 21

26 FIBERGLASS OUTDOOR SCULPTURES 26 It was 1957 when Mr. Ivo Demetz saw some fiberglass artistic works in London and then at the Liverpool Cathedral which has cast fiberglass doors. Back home with his staff he started testing this new medium and after a few years decided to use it in his studio. Nowadays we have a one-floor workshop of sq m or 16,600 sq ft, located just outside Milan (Italy), in which our staff is able to make fiberglass statues in any requested size.

27 To make a fiberglass statue there must be a model from which a mould can be made. The model can be a standard figure such as the Pietà of Michelangelo, or a custom made figure such as the 12 ft - 6 meter Risen Christ - Mod. 280/29. copyright Demetz Art Studio All rights reserved 27
