1 The Common Thread Chronicle J A N U A R Y S P E C I A L P O I N T S O F I N - T E R E S T : Next Meeting January 9, 6:30pm Location Parker Adventist Hospital Inspiration A C H E C K L I S T : Nametag Show and Tell Tote Bag Supplies January Meeting - New meeting night Change in the New Year! January 9 will be the next meeting date of Common Thread Quilt Club at the Parker Adventist Hospital. We will be in the Inspiration A conference room all year, with the exception of February s meeting which will convene in Pine A & B. Club meetings will be held the 2nd Monday of each month at 6:30 PM, with access to the room beginning at 6:00 PM. You re welcome to meet with part of the group for dinner ( s sent out each month by Judi). Or have dinner or a snack at the hospital cafeteria prior to the meeting. Our January meeting will kick off with an introduction to the 2017 Journal Project. There will be a short demo or informational time to go along with the various project themes during the year. Then we will be working that night on tote bags as a thank you to the hospital for letting the club use meeting room for the year at no charge. So we really do need to keep the totes coming! Instruction sheets will be provided, as well as some upholstery and home décor fabric scraps and a couple of ironing stations. You can help that night by sewing, cutting fabric or ironing. Even if you forget your supplies, we can use your help! Suggested items to bring that night -- bring what you might use: Upholstery and/or home décor weight fabric Webbing for straps Iron Ironing board or mat Sewing machine Extension cord Rotary mat and cutter, plus ruler General sewing supplies: scissors, pins, thread, seam ripper

2 Common Threads Upcoming Programs This year, our meetings will be held at the Parker Adventist Hospital on the 2nd Monday of each month at 6:30 PM. January Journal Project Kickoff and Demo Hospital Tote Bag Sew Night February 2017 Caohagen Island Quilts, Dana Jones Raffle Basket Drawing March 2017 Add-a-Quarter New Quilts Trunk Show, Carolyn McCormick First Journal Project Reveal Second Journal Project Announcement Winter Weather Updates In Colorado there is always the chance of severe or winter weather which would be dangerous or difficult to maneuver on the night of a scheduled CTQC meeting. We will send out an blast ahead of time if there is a clear weather warning in the area (particularly severe ice or snowfall). Ginny will also poast a note on the website regarding any change or meeting status. January 2017 Web Wanderings - by Ethel Swartley A Quilting Life: Quilter and author Sherri McConnell keeps a blog called A Quilting Life, where she shows her bright quilts that use simple shapes that would be easy to duplicate with jellyrolls or charm packs. The paid advertising on her page can be somewhat annoying, but Sherri does offer tutorials and patterns for many quick, simple quilts, and she offers practical advice for everything from organizing your scraps to setting quilting goals. Since she seems to be able to manage updating her blog at least twice a week, I think I could use some of her organizing skills, so I plan to spend more time in 2017 poking around to see what else Sherri has to offer. 3 International Quilt Study Center & Museum Quilt of the Month January 2012 Michael James Daybook: 8 September IQSC , gift of Michael and Judith James Michael James' 'Daybook' series, nineteen quilts completed between September 2006 and September 2007, was created within the boundaries of two selfimposed restrictions: a template for the format (a "two-over-one-over-three architecture of rectangular forms, more or less proportional," as James describes it) and the requirement that once he began working on the quilt top, he would not leave his studio until it was completed. At times, the pieces came together quickly in a matter of one or two hours, other times it took him an entire studio day of manipulation to achieve a fully resolved quilt top. Constructed from digitally-printed fabrics designed by James using layered images from his extensive travels around the world, the 'Daybook' series represents a form of journalling. James says, "the individual results can be taken as reflections of my mood or my emotional/intellectual impulses as I composed the surface arrangement. In this sense each of these works is an entry in a Daybook --tied to a specific date and serving as a record of my relationship to my sources and my medium on the given day." The themes James explores in the 'Daybook' series include the tension between the natural and built environments. In 'Daybook: 8 September 2006,' James makes specific reference in the top panels to human constructions and activities, leaving us asking questions like, "Where precisely is 809 Washington Street and what was the artist doing there?" In the lower portions, the "microenvironments" James enjoys investigating are less specific, perhaps drawn from the amorphous forms of organic material like leaves and slender tree trunks or the layers of visual information that accrete on urban surfaces, like paint splatters on a brick wall or mud thrown from car tires onto the sidewalk. This quilt is included in the exhibition A Tribute to Ardis James. Michael Francis James (born 30 June 1949) is an American artist, educator, author, and lecturer. He is best known as a leader of the art quilt movement that began in the 1970s and is currently the Chair and Ardis James Professor of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.
