1 Snipping Tool Overview The Snipping Tool provides a way to capture images from your display screen and imbed them in documents you develop. This is especially useful in Histopathology lab, since it allows you to take notes in OneNote which contain annotated images from Aperio ImageScope slides. It is important to understand there are two different versions of the screen capture features available to users of Windows and Office The one that is embedded in OneNote is referred to there as the Clipping Tool. It represents a subset of the functionality of the full function Snipping Tool, which is an application you launch from the start menu. The OneNote clipping tool is accessed using <Windows key + S>. By default, each snip image you create this way lands on its own page in Microsoft OneNote. From there you can paste it into any Office document. Since the clipping tool is part of OneNote, this program needs to run at least once for the Clipping Tool to work properly. In addition, you can customize the Clipping Tool to place the screen image on the clipboard only. Before you dig into the Clipping Tool or Snipping Tool, you may first want to review the screen printing basics of Windows. Below is an example of what you get when you press the <Print Screen> button, which on some devices requires the combination <Fn + PrtSc>. The entire content of the display screen becomes an image. It goes to the clipboard, which you can then paste it into a file, a Word document for example. Yet on that same display view, if you press <Fn + ALT + PrtSc> or <Ctrl + Alt + PrintScrn>, then whatever window has the focus will be copied to the clipboard, not the entire screen contents as above. In this case, you get an image of just the active window. University of Kansas Medical Center 1

This direct method allows you to select the pasted image with a right click, which brings up a submenu from which you can adjust the size, as follows: It is worth noting that you can adjust the size of an image pasted into Microsoft Word (like this document) in two important ways. 1. This implicit method uses the margins of the document to establish the default upper limit for a pasted image. In this case, a 1.5 left margin and a 2 right margin on an 8 ½ wide page gives you a 5 size limit. Clippings you paste here will be automatically reduced to a 5 width unless they are smaller than 5 inches, in which case they will paste at 100% of their original (pixel) size. 3 This shows the image size detail screen where you enter an exact size/scale. Or, even smaller, like this (Shown at 50%). This is where the Snipping Tool comes in handy. Still, it is good to remember that <ALT + PrtScn> gives you a very fast screen shot of an entire window. To begin with the Clipping Tool, first run OneNote. Click the START button>> Type one in the search window or scroll to OneNote>> pick MS Office OneNote from the list. The first time OneNote starts you will see this untitled page. Yet there are times when what you really want to capture is only part of the screen like this (shown at 100%). University of Kansas Medical Center 3

4 Launch the OneNote Clipping Tool by pressing <Window Key + S>. Your screen is blanked out & you see something like this. Note: Paste the image from the clipboard anywhere you like. From here, you select a portion of the screen by dragging a rectangle with your pen (or mouse). The Snipping Tool copies your selection to the clipboard and shows the image in a new page in the Unfiled Notes section of OneNote. University of Kansas Medical Center 4

5 Note: Popup boxes provide additional information. To change the default location for clippings, click on File in OneNote and choose Options. Note: The default setting causes OneNote to launch with the image (clipping) in a new page. University of Kansas Medical Center 5

6 Choose Send to OneNote on the next screen This avoids launching a new incidence of OneNote and a new notes page with each clipping you make. Select the dropdown menu on the next screen for Screen Clippings for more control over the clipping tool configuration. University of Kansas Medical Center 6

7 Up to this point in this document the information provided describes the Clipping Tool. From this point forward you will find a description of its big brother, the Snipping Tool, an application which stands separate from OneNote in Vista. When you Press F1 for Help from the above screen, you get a tutorial. Launch Snipping Tool from the Start menu: press <START> then type snip and select Snipping Tool Program. Note: You see this window over the blanked out screen. You should notice there are four types of Snips as listed above. You can explore these further on your own. 8 Your goal should be to make one of these (with annotations): Notice the submenu (click the dropdown arrow) lets you select the type of snip to make. To complete the job, you will need the markup screen shown below. University of Kansas Medical Center 8

10 Here is the Snipping Tool application and its Options menu. You can drag the Snipping tool to the Quick Launch Toolbar for easy access. Open the Start menu and type Snip to find the program. Left click and hold while dragging the program name to the Quick Launch Toolbar. University of Kansas Medical Center 10

11 FAQ for Snipping Tool: In what format can I save snips? You can save a snip as an HTML, PNG, GIF, or JPEG file. After you capture a snip, you can save it by clicking the Save Snip button in the mark-up window. Why does a URL appear below my snip when I save it? A URL appears when you capture a snip from a browser window and save it as an HTML file. To turn off this option: Click to open Snipping Tool. Click Options. In the Snipping Tool Options dialog box, clear they Include URL below snips (HTML only) check box. Can I change the color of the ink that's used to capture snips? Yes. Here is how to do it: Click to open Snipping Tool. Click Options. In the Snipping Tool Options dialog box, click the Ink color box, and then select a color from the menu. Can I remove the ink that's used to capture snips? Yes. Here is how to do it: Click to open Snipping Tool. Click Options. In the Snipping Tool Options dialog box, clear the Show selection ink after snips are captured check box. To paste a snip into an message, specify HTML as the message format in your program. Why snips are automatically copied to the Clipboard? Creating snips automatically creates copies to the Clipboard so that you can quickly capture a snip and paste it into a program, without needing to click the Copy button in the mark-up window. To turn off this option: Click to open Snipping Tool See page 6 of this document. In the Snipping Tool Options dialog box, clear the Always copy snips to the Clipboard check box. Can I capture a snip of a menu, such as a shortcut menu or the Start menu? Yes. Here is how to do it: Click to open Snipping Tool Press ESC, and then open the menu that you want to capture. Press CTRL+PRINT SCREEN. Select the type of snip you want, and then capture the menu.
