1 SUMMER PROGRAM 2018 Course title: Couture Craftsmanship Meeting Times and Days: June 25 July 6, 2018/ Monday - Friday, 9am to 5 pm Instructor: Géraldine Goddat, Claire Jochum COURSE DESCRIPTION This course provides students with hands-on skill building involved in the different steps of a couture project: pattern drafting, sewing, tailoring and embellishment. You will have the opportunity to design and produce a unique garment and learn all the major stepping stones in the process of making a skirt: draft the pattern and produce a toile (trial) version of a skirt, select the fabric and embellishments for the final garment, sew and embellish the fabric (embroidery, surface treatment, etc.), and tailor the fitted garment. Recommended for students who want to improve their technical skills for garment making and craftsmanship, this course is designed as a series of intensive workshops in the different fields. LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of the course, a student should be able to: Build a cohesive garment project and develop technical sowing and textiles skills. Analysis of appropriate textile surface treatments and embellishment techniques. Construction of a strong, personal, innovating garment. Carry out textile research and swatching adapted to a specific garment. Basic understanding on process of 3D form, 3D thinking, draping with fabric on the stand. Basic understanding of the process of creating a garment from idea to 3D form. COURSE REQUIREMENTS Prerequisites: Basic sewing machine techniques

2 ASSESSMENT Students will be assessed on the following criteria: Class and critique participation & preparedness 20% Attendance 20% In-class and homework assignments 40% Research book 20% Grades for in-class projects, home projects and sketchbook will be assigned based on individual progress, understanding/completion of the assignments, technical execution and creativity Students will be given a grade based on the following descriptions: A = Work of exceptional quality which goes beyond the stated goals of the course A- = Work of very high quality B+ = Work of high quality B = Very good work B- = Good work C+= Above average work C = Average work, passable C- = Passing but below average D = Below average indicating that the student did not fully understand or complete assignment F = Failure, no effort shown, no credit received ATTENDANCE You are expected to fully participate in every session to be sure not to miss important information, which will lead to the successful completion of the course. Substantial absences are factored into grades. Please note the following: 2 late arrivals (more than 15 minutes) or early departures= one full absence Half a day out of class = one full absence 2 absences = considered excessive absence for a course 3 absences are grounds for failure in the course

3 SCHOOL POLICIES 1. Plagiarism is a serious offense and will not be tolerated. All research, text, and image sources must be cited using Chicago (Turabian) style. See your instructor or the Student Handbook if you are unclear about what constitutes plagiarism. 2. You are required to attend and participate in class critiques and other presentations. Be respectful of your fellow classmates. 3. No phones, devices for listening to music, or other electronics are allowed in class, unless otherwise specified by the instructor. 4. No ing, web surfing, or instant messaging, etc. is allowed during class time, unless otherwise specified by the instructor. 5. Classrooms are community space. Please leave them clean and tidy. 6. All Paris College of Art buildings are NON SMOKING, including balconies and the courtyard. You must go outside in the street to smoke. Students found smoking on PCA premises will be fined. MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES For textile embellishment and research (about 30 euros): Scissors, pencil, eraser, ruler 1 embroidery loop (cercle à broder from Fil 2000, Bonheur des Dames) + embroidery needle for basic embroidery yarn + 1 thin needle for beading (aiguille fine pour perlage) Felting needles medium size and foam (aiguilles moyennes et mousse pour feutrage from Pain d Epices) Basic baking paper from supermarket Various materials according to chosen embellishment project: back fabric, beads, yarns, needle etc... (discussed in class) For 3D design : Japanese ruler Plastic French Curve Scissors for fabric/ Scissors for paper Pins ( extra thin ), needles ( extra thin ), black cotton thread chalk or chalk pencil color basting thread ( fil de bati )
