1 Class: FOODS The baked product competitions Fillings, frosting, glazing, pie filling, and meringue whether uncooked or cooked are not permitted to contain cream cheese, whipped cream, unpasteurized milk or eggs/egg whites (pasteurized eggs or eggs cooked to 160 F may be used). Home-canned fruits, vegetables, or meat are NOT permitted in product. Contestants should carefully wash their hands and make sure that their hands do not have any open cuts before preparing foods. Whenever possible baked products should be transported and stored in chilled coolers (41 F). Judges and individuals who will consume products from county and state competitions should be informed that they are at risk for food borne illness since the established policy cannot guarantee that an entry which is a potentially hazardous food has been properly prepared or handled before, during or following the competition. Exhibits will be coordinated by the Extension Homemakers. No pre-entry is required. 2. Must reside in Jennings County or be a member of an Extension Organization in Jennings County (Extension Homemakers, Master Gardener, 4-H Parent, etc.). 3. All exhibits will be judged by entry number. 4. Entries of children to age 12 will be judged separately. 5. Exhibits will be judged on their quality and given a blue, red, or white placing. A Champion and Reserve Champion will be awarded for each *category. A Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion will be awarded for each CLASS. All awards will be given at the discretion of the judges. At check out time, ribbons will be given, if the exhibitor wishes. 6. All exhibits must have been made by the exhibitor, except heirlooms. A club, church, or organization may enter a quilt. Exhibits entered after check-in time will be exhibited, but not judged. 7. Pictures, photography, wall hanging, samplers, etc. must be ready to hang. 8. Exhibitor must select the technique to be judged if mixed media. 9. Heirlooms, 35 yrs. or older will be displayed only, not judged. A story may accompany these exhibits. Heirlooms are for any non-perishable category. 10. Professional exhibits can be entered if noted. A professional is defined anyone who makes more than $500 a year from the type of product being exhibited. 11. If the exhibit does not meet all requirements, the exhibit will be dropped one placing. 12. CLOSED JUDGING All exhibits will receive a scorecard with judge s comments at the time of project release. Awards for 1st and 2nd place will be presented to individuals whose home canned entry is selected the best in the category. A panel of judges will select the top two entries in Fruits, Vegetables, Pickles, and Soft Spreads. Entries must be preserved in Ball Jars and sealed with Ball Lids and Bands specially designed for home canning, or preserved in Kerr Jars sealed with Kerr Lids and Bands specially designed for home canning. In addition, entries in the soft spread category must be prepared using Ball Pectin: Classic, Low or No-Sugar, or Liquid. Proof of pectin purchase in the form of a receipt or product UPC must be submitted with entry.
