1 June Meeting - June 2 President s Message Are you getting excited about our quilt show? Or, are you starting to wonder what will I do? It seemed that I had lots of time to work on my show quilt and now, suddenly, time is running out. Guess that means I am poor at time management! I hope that you are working on a quilt or have something ready to enter in our show. LMQG has a reputation for a great show and I m certain that this is going to be our best show ever. We have a number of great vendors lined up to tempt all quilters. Again this year, our boutique will be filled with great gift ideas as well as things that we all need. A big thank you to our show chair, Carolyn Harris, and her committee for all the prep work needed to make this show a success. You will have opportunities to sign up to help on a number of committees at the June meeting and I encourage you to be thinking about where you want to serve. It takes our entire guild to make this show a success plus it is a lot of fun and a way to get to know guild members that you may not know. A reminder that the June meeting will be important for sign-up because we DO NOT HAVE A JULY MEETING. Each year our meeting date is in conflict with Bible School at Eternal Shepherd. They turn their fellowship hall into their classroom so we take the month off. Quilt entries will be due at the August meeting. There will be more information at the June meeting and the entry form and details are available on the web site member s page. If you have questions, contact the entries chairman or Carolyn. All the chairman are also listed on the web. Take a look at quilts you have that might be used in one of our off-site displays. Sue Swan will be providing more information in June and on the web. I believe she will definitely be looking for antique quilts think she said things from the 30 s especially. Finally, if you have a quilt that you would like appraised. Holly Anderson will be at Sue Hunston s home to do appraisals on August 4, which is the day of our meeting. Contact Sue at to set up an appointment. Holly will be doing a program that evening to give everyone a view of what an appraisal entails. Shirley 1

3 June Program Leni Wiener - June 2 My work can best be described as representational fabric collage. Although I am moved by the beauty of nature, I am most inspired by the people around me. A former photographer, my work begins with photographs I take of strangers, unaware of the camera, caught in those unremarkable and familiar moments that pass without notice or reflection. Backgrounds and environments are less important than the expressive body language that tells us so much about these people we have never met. Viewers are invited to bring their own life experience to the story in each art quilt. I use only commercially available cotton fabric, building the complexity of the image with a layering of unexpected patterns. I pay as much attention to the value of the fabrics I choose as their color. The pieces are constructed in raw edge machine appliqué, freeing me from tedious piecing and allowing the fraying and puckering that is the inherent characteristic of fabric. Leni Wiener - Photo Inspired Art Quilts - June 3* Photos to Art Quilts Organizers who wish to allow students to work on a photo of their choice may do so in this two day workshop. Students may choose a pattern from either Photo-inspired Art Quilts or Pictorial Art Quilt Guidebook, or use one of their own photos. The workshop will cover the technique basics, with particular attention paid to each student and the specific needs of their chosen art quilt. *The June Workshop will start at 8:30 so that Leni can make her flight home. Supply list located on page 6. 3

6 Basic Supply List - June Workshop Leni Levenson Wiener leni@leniwiener.com If students will be working on a pattern from my book, Photo-Inspired Art Quilts, they need to me ahead of time to tell me which pattern they want so I can print them and bring them with me. If students are to be given the option of using a photo of their own, they should me the photo well in advance of the class (at least 2 weeks prior to class is preferred) so I can print the pattern. They really need to decide in advance as I will bring the patterns and students will need to have an idea of what fabrics to bring. If we decide to go with either Explorers or Afghan Girl, that will be the pattern I bring for everyone. There is a $15 kit fee which includes the pattern and a gray scale value card; $20 if I must make a specific pattern. Each student should bring: -A sewing machine in good working condition, all needles, threads (including a white and a black bobbin thread and a clear and smoke monofilament) and a darning foot. (Although we will not use the machine until late in the first day and students who prefer to sew their quilt top together at home need not bring the machine with them) -A selection of fabrics they want to use in the art quilt. Students are encouraged to bring lots of options, as we will discuss choices and make changes in class. -Fabric scissors: both large and small are helpful. -Paper scissors -Freezer paper -Straight pins -Fabric Glue and toothpicks -Batting of your choice (a piece large enough for the finished art quilt) -Backing fabric (a piece large enough for the finished art quilt, I use muslin or cotton canvas, any cotton fabric will do) -Mechanical Pencil -Tracing paper Leni will bring each full scale pattern with her. Students MUST let her know ahead of the workshop what image they will be using to make their art quilt. Students may contact me prior to class at: leni@leniwiener.com 6
