April Memorial Avenue, Suite 213, Thunder Bay, Ontario, P7B 4A3 h p://thunderbayquilters.org/ The Executive will work together as a team to support and encourage new quilters, challenge and draw upon experienced quilters and provide warmth and comfort to those in need. As your Executive Committee, we are designing some things to meet the above goal. SUBMISSION DEADLINE Items for Quilters Quill should be submitted by the Monday of two weeks before the Guild Meeting. Please or call Joanne Kavanagh mailto: kavanagh@tbaytel.net April 18, 2016 Welcome Acceptance of Agenda Acceptance of Minutes Business arising from minutes Executive Committee Reports New Business Break Show and Tell Programme Door Prizes / Adjournment Next Meeting - May 16, 2016 As I look out the window and see the snow falling I am feeling a little down, I was really hoping for an early Spring but I should know better living in the Northwest and I chose to live in the Thunder Bay area so I shouldn t complain. I had a wonderful Easter as my daughter and son-in-law came which always makes the holidays great. The programming at our last meeting was very interesting and I know I learn something new almost every month. Luci and Norma are doing a great job, they are continuing with the colour theory. This month we will be having our meeting in the Fellowship Hall, we will be sitting at tables as requested by Luci and Norma. We need a new programme person in June so please think about taking this position, it can be two or three people sharing the position like Luci and Norma have done, this position makes our meetings interesting and fun. It has been brought to my attention that comfort quilts are not to be shown during Show
and Tell, they are to be displayed in the area designated for them. This was a decision made by the membership a few years ago as Show and Tell was taking too long. Over the next few months you will notice some changes in our newsletter The Quill. We have been receiving some complaints about the format and how uninspiring it is. The Quill has been formatted this way as we just had to print too many copies which is quite expensive just doing the black and white. There was a motion made and passed at the Executive Meeting to allow Joanne to make changes to the format and to update the newsletter. Now that we will be only printing two copies for the Library starting in September she will be able to add colour. I have been communicating with Joanne Kavanagh, she has a lot of great ideas but she would also like input from the Executive and the Membership about what we would like to see in the Quill as it is our newsletter. Joanne is very experienced in doing newsletters as she does one for another group she belongs to. Here are some of her ideas. At the end of the day the newsletter should reflect who we are, what we enjoy doing and keep the membership informed of upcoming events, as well as report on recent events (with pictures) for the folks that couldn t make it to the event. The newsletter could contain issues and items of interest to the members; Recipes for popular foods from potlucks and Bees Significant events such as births, deaths, weddings (or whatever) in Members lives items of interest such as Tens ways to improve your Quilting, found by searching the internet Joanne hopes this will spark some discussion and imagination. We are no longer bound by what we can afford to print. This leaves the door wide open for many forms of submissions. All information members want to submit must be in no later than the day after the Executive meeting and most submissions should be in two weeks before the Quill is posted. 3 This is the display that is in the Library at Lakehead University. Volunteers who had fun putting this display together are Norma Wynn, Ellen and Jacque Lang, Cathy Ridley and Sharon Melville POSSIBILITIES GROUP The remaining meetings are Apr 26, and May 31, meeting at 7pm in Rm 2001, Superior C.V.I. Christina I have introduced a little incentive to read the financial reports posted each month in the Quill newsletter. On either the Balance Sheet or the Income Statement there will be a clue hidden. Your job is to read these reports and find that clue. Once you find it, write the account description and dollar amount on a small paper and place it in the jar on the executive table BEFORE THE MEETING STARTS. When it is my turn to give my report I will pick a name and that person will get a little treat. Have fun! Ellen This is a reminder that the library will be closed for the June meeting. Please return any books you have signed out at the May meeting. Thanks. Marg Marks h p://thunderbayquilters.org/ 3
PRE-MEETING DEMOS Cindy will be doing some demo's on various applique techniques before the meeting, starting around 6:15. I will show you how to do invisible applique by machine and some tricks for Heat & Bond applique for getting sharp points when zig zagging the edges. I used the invisible applique on the hexi trivet (one of the April projects) instead of hand appliqueing. I thought everyone knew how to use your machine to emulate hand applique but apparently not. If time permits I will also talk about other finishing ideas for making your quilts the best - breaking some bad habits. IDEAS FOR THE GUILD BOOTH FOR THE 2017 SHOW April is basket & other kitchen ideas. But I'll still have kits from previous months available (last month's birds make really cute Christmas ornaments). Adrienne made the one hour basket - she said it took about an hour and a half for the first one. You could make these in any size. I'll have her sample at the meeting that was made in the size the pattern is for. I fell in love with hexis after taking the class with Cathy Ridley and Karen Boote. I made a variation of Cathy's hexi trivet. Once the hexi flower is made the rest is really fast. Make them in any colour including Christmas. Lastly I'll show you 2 different napkin baskets. Other ideas for hexis: make the flower and turn it into a coaster - that's what I did with the two I made in class. I'll have my sample at the meeting. For those of you who knit or crochet: everyone loves the knitted/crocheted cotton dish clothes. Also the nylon scrubbies. Leila Pettigrew has made some scrubbies that are nylon on one side and cotton on the other - best of both worlds. I love mine. Any of these would be great to sell in our booth as well. May pattern: bibs June patterns: mug rugs for all seasons and occasions I was asked if we could do a sewing bee for some of these products. I'm going to ask Christina to check into booking Superior HS for a Saturday or Sunday before the May long weekend if there is enough interest. Then maybe again next spring. There are several patterns Cathy Ridley and I have that we can't have Joanne reprint due to copyright but we will do a sewing day and have people make them. One is a really nice tool caddy - the one Cathy had at the hexi class. Note to those who get printed copies of the Quill. The patterns are not printed with the Quill since printing colour gets expensive. So please ask a friend with a computer to print off the pattern for you if you'd like to make the project. Chairperson Cindy Cockell We have elections coming up as we always do in June. We require a President, Vice-President and Programme. Now President is someone who likes to oversee all the committees and plan executive meetings, Vice-President organizes and searches out people and ideas for our various classes and Programme shares exciting new ideas, techniques and people who inspire, such as; the outer space quilter that Louise and Sheila found for us. Please seek out an executive if you yourself would like to run or if you have any suggestions. Sincerely Norma 4
The Quilt Bee held in March certainly was productive. We continue to get beautiful quilt tops and finished quilts turned in. We've taken some photos and posted them on Instagram with the Hashtag #ThunderBayQuiltersGuild and #TBQG. (Instagram is a photo sharing App. Hashtags are phrases that start with the symbol # and are used to group photos within the App.). I've also sent some photos to Cathy for the website. A reminder to let us know when you hand in either a finished top, a partially finished kit, or a completed quilt so that we can mark you off the list. Thank you to all of you for participating. If you are looking for more projects, please let us know and we will bring kits to the meetings. As we write this, we are looking forward to a fun finishing bee on April 9. We will provide a summary of that event at the April meeting. Thank you to everyone who has been preparing for the finishing bee. Hopefully this will become a regular event as well. We are tentatively booked for the first weekend in March 2017 for next year's bee. We are already thinking of new patterns and ways to use up the stash of fabrics we have. We are great full for any donation of fabric. Thank you to those of you who have provided a donation of "de-stashed" fabric over the past year. It has helped the members to make beautiful quilts. Adrienne and Nellie At the March meeting, 9 comfort quilts and 42 12½ inch squares were collected. Guild members who turned in a square prior to the finishing Bee (scheduled for April 9th) will have their name entered into the special prize draw (to be awarded in May). Hopefully you have had fun with this project. Jackie Black has creatively planned projects for the Hinge method and I look forward to seeing the quilts. If you have suggestions for recipient locations, please provide the Comfort Quilt Committee a contact and location information (so the size and needs can be determined). The focus should be on sites where the quilts will remain and be used multiple times. Thanks for your support. The Comfort Quilt Committee members meet when there are a number of quilts and decide on the distribution. Records are kept on where the quilts go and a summary will be provided at the year-end. Pat (on behalf of the Committee) Recommended Quilt Sizes Neo Natal 36 x 36 Crib 34 to 36 x 36 Wheel Chair 36 x 48 Nap Quilt 40 x Hospice/Bed 63 to 65" x 80 5
I will have a sign-up sheet for anyone interested in participating in a Fidgit quilt bee in the spring. This is a fun new way to clear out all those old large buttons, zippers, ribbon, scraps of textured material, little stuffies, old pockets, all those things you hung on to thinking you could make use of sometime in the future, now is your chance. Anything safe enough for a two year old can be used to create a one of a kind Fidgit quilt. Use your imagination and the sky is the limit. Nothing smaller than a placemat and nothing larger than a crib quilt are the sizes. You start with a piece of material and go from there. We only have four signed up and we need a few more to make this happen. The sign-up sheet for the Fidgit bee will be on the same table as the sign-up sheet for the guild meeting. Hope to see you there. Meghann It is almost a year to our next Quilt Show!! The dates are Apr 28, 29 and April 30th. We hope you will be able to display some of the beautiful "Show & Tell" quilts for the show, (or maybe borrow them back if they have been gifted). There is such talent within our Guild, right from the novice to the most experienced, and even more interesting is the diversity in the quilts shown, from traditional, to modern, and everything inbetween. Our first Quilt Show meeting was held on January 13, 2016, and the following guild members have volunteered for the following positions: Ellen Lang - Treasurer/Registration/De-Registration Committee/and Vendor Committee Cindy Cockell -Quilt Booth Merchandise Chair Adrienne Lopes - Quilt Challenge and Catering Chair Nellie Jaremey- Banquet Chair Laura Cooke - Volunteer Committee Chair Christina Wakefield - Guest Quilter Search Chair Mary Catharine Kennedy - Display Committee Chair Jeannette Dann - Demo Committee Chair Marg Marks - Printing Committee Chair Linda Santorelli - Registration Committee Sharon Melville - Memory Quilt/Registration Committee Aila Metsa - Booth Curtains/Bursary CQA/Rosette CQA/Loon Quilt/New Purchases Maureen Mauro - Volunteer The position for the Advertising Committee Chair is still open. All the Chair persons will need help at one time or another, so please feel free to contact them or myself. We need the support of our Guild Members to make the show the success it has been over the past years. We couldn't do it without you!! Aila Metsa 6
Greetings from the Program Committee, The MARCH program - Colour Theory and making colour choices was great fun to prepare and present. We have had very positive feedback from many members and Norma and I thank you for your input. It makes our job much easier to plan and execute knowing that you, the members are enjoying the presentations and using this information to enhance your own quilting experiences. The APRIL program will continue with Part Two of Colour Theory and Colour choices. This month will see a chance in format as we deliver an interactive program designed to engage the membership in a fun, enjoyable and very creative experience. MAY PROGRAM: UFO/MAGAZINE/BOOK Auction Monies raised from this auction will, as usual go towards purchasing new books for the Library. Magazines need to be bundled and tied and if you are donating a UFO project please make sure that all of the parts are included, especially the pattern/instructions. Thanks, we appreciate all of your involvement and donations. Congratulations to Maria Bell, the first member to complete all 10 of her UFO projects and receive the grand prize. Our industrious Maria has started her second list of 10 projects! Remember members that there is still three months remaining to complete your UFO projects and qualify for a prize of your own. Respectfully submitted, Norma Wynn & Luci Andreacchi h p://thunderbayquilters.org/ 7
