If you get: Rating Scale Score Description Very sufficient 6-10 Sufficient 0-5 Insufficient Now that you have assessed your prior knowledge you are surely ready to move on to the next phase of this module. This will include topics to be discussed as you go through the lessons. FIRM UP Your Understanding In this phase, you will learn the basic concepts and principles underlying the process and delivery in sewing pajama top. Lesson 1 Selecting Fabric for a Pajama Top A fabric is a woven, felted or knitted material. There are different fabrics suitable for pajama top. The most appropriate fabrics for pajama top are cotton, silk or rayon. Characteristics of a Fabric Suitable for a Pajama Top 5
Cotton fabrics are appropriate to wear in tropical countries like the Philippines because they are good conductors of heat. Cotton is versatile and durable and needs frequent laundering. When damp, it is easy to iron using high temperature. Linen is appropriate for pajama tops and it is popularly called the summer fiber. Linen like cotton needs frequent laundering. Rayon is very familiar to silk. Both have low elasticity and resiliency and are quite very good conductors of heat. Guides in Selecting Appropriate Fabric for Oneself Crumple the fabric in your hand and hold it for 30 seconds. Then release it for about 30 seconds. Observe and see if it wrinkles easily. See if the fabric is evenly dyed with pleasing colors. The fabric should be clear and not blurred. Check on the quality and cost of the fabric. Always determine the quantity needed to avoid waste of money. Your personality and complexion must be considered in fabric selection. Activity 1 In your notebook, copy the Venn diagram and write the similarities and differences of the characteristics of the fabrics suitable for pajama tops 6
MY/ OUR REFLECTIONS After having performed Activity No. _one (1) Which is on the differences and similarities of fabrics for pajama top The following are our reflections: What went RIGHT are: What went WRONG are: What should be DONE: Teacher s Comment/ Suggestions: Points to Remember Different fabrics have different characteristics. Your complexion must be considered for fabric selection. 7
Lesson 2 - Body Measurements Success in garment construction depends on accurate measurements. Before pattern drafting, body measurements should be taken to determine the correct pattern to be used. When taking body measurement place a tape measure or cord around the waist. The accuracy of the body measurements depends on the exact waistline location, Shirt length - taken from the nape down the center back to the desired length. Shoulder - taken from one shoulder point to the other. Bust/Breast - taken around the body with the tape measure passing over the fullest part of the shoulder blade at the back and over to the apex. 8
Upper arm girth - taken around the fullest part of the arm in line with the armpit. Lower arm girth or Sleeve width - taken around the arm two to three inches below the armpit. Sleeve length - taken from the shoulder tip point down to the desired sleeve length. Neck measure taken around the neckline. Activity 2 Look for someone to be measured. With your tape measure, take the needed body measurements in drafting patterns of a pajama top. 9

Lesson 4 Preparing the Fabric One important step in sewing is fabric preparation. To preserve the good fit of the garment the fabric grain should be prepared well before cutting. Parts of the Woven Fabric It is important to know the parts of fabrics because this helps in cutting, sewing and handling them. The lengthwise yarn of the fabric is called warp and the crosswise yarn is woof. Selvage is the finished edge. The cutting edge of the fabric is the raw or unfinished edge.. When the fabric is folded diagonally, the result is a true bias. Instructions in Preparing the Fabric a. Straightening the fabric end and fabric grain. The fabric that is slightly off- grain is straightened by pulling the opposite ends of the fabric until the crosswise grain is straight. b. Soaking. After the selvages and grain of the fabric have been straightened, soak the fabric in water for 30 to 60 minutes, then hang to dry. To maintain the grain of the fabric, do not wring it for it will wrinkle. If wrinkled or creased, press fabric carefully along the crosswise grain. c. Pressing. Pin the fabric edges together if it does not lie flat when folded or corners are not square. Steam press from the cut edges and work towards the fold. While still hot, smoothen the fabric with your hands. 13
Activity 4 A. In your notebook answer the following. 1. How do you straighten the fabric that is lightly off-grain? 2. Why is soaking important in the preparation of the fabric? B. Prepare your fabric following the instructions in preparing the fabric. Points to Remember.Fabrics prepared for cutting should have threads running straight from selvage to selvage. Lesson 5 laying Out of Patterns, Cutting and Marking It is always important to follow the rules in laying out patterns in the fabric to ensure accuracy. Directions in Laying Out Pattern Pieces 1. Fold the fabric with the right side together and the wrong side up. 2. Do not cut the fabric until all pattern pieces are in place this is done by arranging and rearranging the pattern pieces to make the best arrangement. 3. Make a temporary pattern lay-out, especially if the clothe is too small. 4. Layout the big pattern pieces first. 5. Place the patterns near one another. Fit the pattern as in a jigsaw puzzle. 14
Techniques in Pinning Pattern Pieces on the Fabric 1. Fabric should be kept flat on the table when pinning. The fabric should not be lifted from the table or place the left hand under it. This may cause the fabric to shift under the pattern and get out of shape when cut. 2. Place pins perpendicular to the edge of the pattern. 3. Place pins about 1.5cm. from the edge, because the shears will be damaged and have jagged edges and when this cuts through the pins. 4. Pin the fabric with an interval of 13cm. Too many pins on the cloth tend to wrinkle it. The pattern will not slip out of place when it is cut if more pins are placed along curved edges. Guidelines in Cutting Garment Pieces 1. Place the fabric and the pattern flat on the table. Keep your left hand on the part that you are cutting to prevent the fabric from slipping or pulling out of shape. 2. Place the left hand on the pattern and cut with long, even strokes. Use short strokes in curved areas. Use the point of the shears when cutting corners or short distances. Cut the fabric from the wide to narrow areas of each pattern piece. 3. Walk around the table as you cut the fabric. Do not pull the cloth near you as the fabric may slip or stretch out of shape. 4. After cutting each part, place it aside but do not remove the pins and pattern to keep this ready for marking. 5. Keep all scraps of cloth for future use. Step in Transferring Marks On the Fabric Transfer your pattern marks to the fabric by using tailor s chalk and dressmaker s carbon paper with the help of a tracing wheel. Observe the following steps: 1. Transfer marks on the wrong side of the cloth. 2. Mark straight lines, using a ruler. Run the tracing wheel or tailor s chalk steadily and firmly along the edge of the ruler only once. 3. To determine the point, mark the tips of the dart with short cross lines. 4. Slant the handle of the tracing wheel slightly inward toward the center of the curves to mark these easily. 15
Activity 5 In your notebook, answer the following questions. 1. How are the patterns placed on the fabric? 2. How are markings transferred to the other side of the fabric? 3. How do you cut curved lines? Points to Remember To ensure good fit of a dress, the correct way of laying out patterns on the fabric should be followed. Lesson 6- Sewing a Pajama Top (with short sleeves and sports collar) How would you like to sew your own sleep wear? Sewing a pajama top is easy to make. Pajama top could either be collarless or with collar, sleeveless or with sleeves (short or long). The following procedures discuss the steps in constructing a pajama top Assembling the Front and Back Part of a Pajama Top 1. Stay stitch the neckline and armholes 2. Edge stitch the raw edges. 3. Join shoulder seams. 4. Close the side seams. Attaching the Collar 1. Fold the collar with the right side in. 2. Stich the ends from the fold line toward the raw collar edges. 3. Trim, turn, and press. 4. Clip almost to the stayline at about ½ inch (1.3cm) interval. 5. Place the right side of the under collar against the right side of the garment. 6. Stitch around the entire neckline seam. Stitch through both collars as well as through the garment facing. 7. Turn facing to the underside press front collar. Hem it to the stitching line across the back of the collar with slanting, hemming stitches. 16
Assembling and Attaching the Sleeves 1. Stay stitch the armhole. Edge stitch the under edge of the sleeves. 2. Close the underarm seam. 3. Fasten the end of the stitching line. 4. Turn right side out, and then hold the right sleeve to the right armhole. 5. Distribute fullness and pin between these points. 6. Baste and stitch. 7. Remove basting.
