1 OBJECTIVES OF THE CLOTHING PROJECT 1. Help youth gain basic clothing information and skills in planning their wardrobes. 2. Increase knowledge and improve skills in clothing construction. 3. Provide opportunities to develop self-confidence and leadership ability. 4. Develop skills in problem-solving and decision-making as related to clothing construction and wardrobe planning. 2 LEVEL 1 (9- to 11-year-olds) Things to Learn Things to Do Wardrobe Planning and Inventory 1. Inventory. 2. Storage. 3. Planning for purchases. Sewing Equipment 1. Selection, use and care of a sewing box and sewing equipment. 2. Selection, use and care of pressing tools. 3. Use and care of the sewing machine. Getting Started 1. How to use shears, ruler, needle and thimble. Make an inventory of your present wardrobe. Use the form suggested in Unit 1. Sort your clothes by season, use, type or color. Organize storage in closet and drawer space. List items of clothing needed to complete your wardrobe. Select a basic color for your ward robe. Recycle clothing apparel. Select/make a sewing box. Visit a store to select hand sewing tools. Learn how to use shears, thimble, tracing wheel and paper. Collect measuring tools. Learn the metric system. Demonstrate of measuring tapes, rulers, the use etc. Demonstrate the difference between ironing and pressing. Learn safety rules in using electrical equipment. Give an illustrated talk on the parts of the sewing machine. Demonstrate how to thread the upper machine and bobbin case. Practice use of seam guide; turning corners, starting and stopping. Demonstrate oiling and cleaning a sewing machine. Select a sewing project that will require cutting straight lines (examples--pillow cover, pot holder). Make a poster showing both the metric system and the fractional inch system. \
3 Things to Learn Things to Do 2. How to do basic hand sewing skills. 3. Guidelines for good workmanship. D. Pattern Selection 1. How to take measurements. 2. How to buy a pattern. E. Textiles and Fabric Selection 1. Fiber content. 2. Fabric construction. 3. Fabric finishes. Cut samples of 4" x 6" from fabric. Use them to practice hand basting and backstitching. Select a sewing project that will have a hem in it and require sewing on fasteners. Demonsrate how to thread a needle, tie knots and make small uniform-size stitches. Make a poster showing the guides for good workmanship in Manual I. Demonstrate good working habits at the sewing machine to other 4-H members. Make a wall chart showing safety procedures to use when sewing. Use 4" x 6" swatches of different types of fabrics showing suitable seam finishes. Demonstrate how to take body measurements. Fill in measurement chart and select pattern size from charts in the pattern catalog. Select a sewing project that uses a pattern and will require you to learn some of the techniques in the Sewing Vocabulary.* *This step may be repeated several times. Be sure to have your 4-H leader and parent help in your selection process. Keep a record of fabric label information. Plan a display of textile fibers-- natural and man made. Give an illustrated talk on fabric labeling. Do a bulletin board showing the meaning of grainline, warp, filling, bias and selvage. Go to a store to select pattern, fabric and sewing notions.

How to do a trial and permanent placement. 3. Cutting procedures. 4. Marking techniques. G. Sewing Vocabulary (See Unit I) H. Steps in Sewing Mark the back of the pattern envelope so you know how much fabric to buy. Pretreat washable fabrics at home before using in a project. Select the layout to use for your pattern size and fabric width. Demonstrate to the club how to place fabric according to the layout and how to do a trial placement. Show correct methods of pinning and cutting to someone else. Practice the procedure in the manual for pinning and cutting. Demonstrate the use of dressmaker carbon and a tracing wheel. Plan a bulletin board showing pattern ( marking symbols. Keep a record of the techniques that you learn. Use fabric samples to practice basting, clean finishing, clipping, darts, and ease stitching. Demonstrate how to measure a hem. Plan a poster showing how and where to stay-stitch. Practice all the techniques and skills listed in the vocabulary. It will take several sewing projects to do this. Follow this plan with each sewing project. Look at the list of suggested projects for flat construction in Unit I. Make posters showing project ideas and identify the skills to be learned.

Selection, use and care of sewing equipment. 2. Selection, use and care of pressing equipment. 3. Use and care of the sewing machine. Review Unit I on making a Wardrobe Inventory. With your parents help, set up a clothing allowance. Review Unit I on selection, use and care of sewing equipment. Select/make a pressing cloth. Learn how to use a dressmaker's (tailor's) ham and one other piece of pressing equipment. Learn how to press different types of fabrics and construction details. Learn how to select machine needles and sewing thread for a construction project. Learn how to judge a well-stitched seam. Learn how to determine if the tension and pressure are correct for the fabric type. Learn how to clean and oil a sewing machine. Demonstrate how to adjust and care for a sewing machine. Pattern Selection 1. How to take measurements. 2. How to measure a pattern. 3. How to make basic pattern alterations. Review Unit I on taking body measurements. Retake your body measurements, using Measurement Chart in Project II. Select a pattern that will broaden your sewing knowledge and skills. Learn how to measure the pattern and compare them to your measurements. Learn how to make length and width alterations.

Demonstrate how to "grain perfect" a woven fabric. Learn how to shrink wool. Learn how to prepare a knit fabric for cutting. Learn how to lay out a pattern using the napped direction. Demonstrate how to lay out a pattern on napped fabrics. Learn how to cut, interface and construct a waistband. Learn how to cut out and apply a waistband without a pattern. Learn how to apply a facing with a zipper closure. Learn how to relieve bulkage. Learn how to understitch facing. F. Sewing Vocabulary Keep a record of the techniques that you learn. Make a display of various types of fabrics with suitable seam finishes.

Keep a financial record of how much each project cost, including your losses. Using the manual's checkpoints on quality construction, evaluate the quality of a ready-to-wear garment.
