1 PAGE 1 Totes, handbags and other accessories often need a secure closure. Something more than a hook & eye or snap, yet something that is visually appealing. Consider a flip lock for quick and easy access, style, and security. They are easy to apply and so professional! Just follow the tutorial below to see how this hardware is attached!

2 PAGE 2 What are the parts of a Flip Lock? Before getting started, let s familiarize ourselves with the parts of this lock. A flip lock has 4 parts plus screws. The flip lock mounts to the base or body of your project with the prongs extending through a washer that hides between the lining and the exterior fabric. The eyelet front goes on the front of the flap and is attached to the eyelet back with screws. When in use, the flip lock extends through the eyelet and flips down to close. Voila! A nicely secured bag. Each lock set includes Flip Lock, Eyelet Front, Eyelet Back, Washer and 2 Screws. 3 PAGE 3 Instructions Supplies: Your project Heavy Weight Iron-On Interfacing about 4 square Dritz Flip Lock (#722-38) Tiny Phillips Head Screwdriver Dritz Marking Pencil Sharp Small Scissors Dritz Fray Check Plastic Canvas (optional) BEFORE APPLYING THE LOCK: Read through this tutorial and your pattern instructions before starting so you can plan the best order for installing your lock. Cut out your project, choosing the position of the lock in advance. Projects vary and so may the construction order. Because the washer and prongs of the flip lock need to be hidden beween the outer fabric and the lining, we give a general sewing order. For simplicity we have drawn the project as a bag. Follow the instructions for your project and use the lock instructions at the appropriate time. Since a flip lock gets flipped and pulled when in use, we call for heavy iron-on interfacing as well as suggesting plastic canvas for additional reinforcement. Prepare the flap Your pattern instructions probably call for an 1. interfaced flap. Add a second layer of interfaing to the flap where the eyelet will attach. Cut the eyelet interfacing about 3 wide x 1-1/2 high. Place it glue side down on the wrong side of the fabric, centered over the intended eyelet position. If you have interfaced the entire flap, fuse this piece on top of the original interfacing, following package directions. 2. Complete the flap following pattern directions. NOTE: For best results the flap should be no thicker than 1/8 to fit properly between front and back of 2-part eyelet. 1. Wrong side of flap fabric

4 PAGE Use a tiny Phillips Head screwdriver to remove the two screws on the back of the eyelet. Apply 2-part Eyelet Place a cloth under the lock when removing and applying screws to prevent losing these extremely small parts. Position the eyelet front on the flap to choose the desired position. Carefully measure to ensure placement is even and straight. Copy and cut out the template on Page 2. Position the template over the measured location. Use a marking pencil to draw around the template shape Right side of flap Template 5. Use sharp tiny scissors to carefully cut along inside lines of the marked template. It is better to have the opening slightly smaller than needed than too large. You can snip bits away to enlarge if needed. A snug fit is best. Seal edges of all layers of fabric with Fray Check to prevent raveling. 5. Stops Fraying on Fabric! DANGER! FLAMMABLE. MAY CAUSE EYE IRRITATION. Keep away from sources of ignition. Do not smoke. 5 PAGE 5 6. Back side of flap Place the eyelet front so it is bottom side up on your work surface. Set the flap right side down over the eyelet front so the raised section extends up through the opening. 7. Apply Flip Lock Use the flip lock to mark its position. Insert the flip lock into the 2-part eyelet. Place the flap in position over the bag as it will be when the bag is closed. Holding the lock in place, carefully press the prongs into the base fabric until they leave an indentation. Raise the flap and use a marking pencil to mark each indentation. Remove the lock. 8. Place the eyelet on a fabric covered surface while working to prevent scratching. Center the eyelet back over the eyelet front, lining up screw holes. Use a tiny Phillips Head screwdriver to attach the screws. Tighten the screws to secure. The flip lock can be attached earlier in the process. However, once attached, it cannot be moved, and you may later wish you had positioned it differently. We suggest the above construction order. However, if you decide to attach the flip lock after partial construction to make hiding the washer easier, check and double check the fit, before cutting the fabric. Attach the flip lock and finish the project Back side of flap 8. Push flip lock up through 2-part eyelet. Then press down on prongs. Mark indentations on base of project.

6 PAGE 6 Add a small square of iron-on interfacing to 9. the wrong side of the marked lock position. If 9. possible, leave the lining open on the section where the turn lock will be attached. This will allow you to hide the washer between the lining and the outer fabric. Plan position of flip lock carefully. Once holes are snipped you cannot change the position of the lock. Wrong side of base project Double check the intended position of the flip 10. lock. Once applied, it cannot be moved. Use 10. a ruler to measure and mark placement and make sure the marks are evenly positioned. If not, repeat Step 8. Use sharp tiny scissors to snip the two marks for the prongs. Use Fray Check on the slits. Be sure to only cut through outer fabric. Right side of base project NOTE: Holes are cut through all layers except the lining. If possible, leave lining in tact to conceal the prongs. When washer is attached, hand stitch the lining closed. Stops Fraying on Fabric! DANGER! FLAMMABLE. MAY CAUSE EYE IRRITATION. 7 PAGE Push the prongs of the flip lock through the slits from right to wrong side. If you are using the optional plastic canvas, position it now. Turn the fabric right side down so prongs extend upward. Place the washer over the prongs. 11. OPTIONAL PLASTIC CANVAS: For extra strength add a layer of plastic canvas between the interfacing and the washer. Cut the plastic canvas slightly smaller than the interfacing. Position it over the prongs, cutting the canvas where prongs touch the canvas. Attach the washer and fold down the prongs as in Step 12. Cut holes in plastic canvas for prongs OPTIONAL PLASTIC CANVAS Use pliers or your fingers to press the prongs toward the center of the washer until they are flat. 13. Complete the project. Pin the lining where it was left open and stitch closed.
