2 Fabric Requirements yards Tonga B9056 Rust (includes binding) 1/2 yard Tonga B9053 Clay yards Tonga B9054 Fennel 1 yard Tonga B9055 Sunrise yards Tonga B7737 Rouge 5/8 yard JT C8591 Sepia 1/2 yard JT C8589 Beige 5/8 yard JT C8586 Amber 5/8 yard JT-8588 Blush 5/8 yard JT C8590 Mocha yards WJT-C8589 Beige (58"-wide backing) 84" x 98" batting Cutting Blocks From Tonga B9054 Fennel: Cut twenty 2 1 2" x width of fabric (WOF) strips. Sub-cut into " squares. Cut seven 2 7 8" x WOF strips. Sub-cut into eighty 2 7 8" squares, then 160 half-square triangles (HST). Cut six 2 1 2" x WOF strips. Sub-cut into eighty left-facing triangles and and eighty right-facing triangles using template B. (Tip: Place fabric wrong sides together and cut out the left and right sections at the same time. Rotate the template to get more per strip.) From both JT C8589 Beige and JT C9053 Clay: Cut two 6 1 2" x WOF strips. Sub-cut into ten 6 1 2" squares. From both JT C8591 Sepia and JT C8590 Mocha: Cut two 6 7 8" x WOF strips. Sub-cut into twelve 6 7 8" squares, then twenty-four HSTs. Cut one 2 7 8" x WOF strip. Sub-cut into twelve 2 7 8" squares, then twenty-four HSTs. From Tonga B9056 Rust: Cut three 6 7 8" x WOF strips. Sub-cut into sixteen 6 7 8" squares, then thirty-two HSTs. Cut two 2 7 8" x WOF strips. Sub-cut into sixteen 2 7 8" squares, then thirty-two HSTs. From Tonga B7737 Rouge: Cut four 2 1 2" x WOF strips. Cut eighty triangles using template A. (Tip: Rotate the template to get more per strip.) Borders/Binding From both JT C8586 Amber and JT C8588 Blush: Cut four 4" x WOF strips. Sub-cut into thirty-six 4" squares. From Tonga B9055 Sunrise: Cut four 7 1 2" x WOF strips. Sub-cut into thirty-six 4" x 7 1 2" rectangles. From Tonga B9054 Fennel: Cut four 7 1 2" x WOF strips. Sub-cut into thirty-six 4" x 7 1 2" rectangles. Cut eight 1 1 2" x WOF strips (inner borders). From Tonga B7737 Rouge: Cut eight 4" x WOF strips. Sub-cut into seventy-two 4" squares. Cut one 7 7 8" x WOF strip. Sub-cut into four 7 7 8" squares, then eight HSTs. From Tonga B9056 Rust: Cut four 6 7 8" squares. Sub-cut into eight HSTs. Cut eight 2 1 2" x WOF strips (outer borders). Cut nine 2 1 4" x WOF strips (binding). Helpful Hints A. Because of the number of pieces in each large block, use a measure as you go system to check yourself. It s easier to adjust seams in smaller units than in a completed block. B. There are numerous bias seams in this quilt, so be careful not to stretch as you sew. C. Press all seams in the direction of the arrows shown on the diagrams. Block Construction Snowball (unit 10 A and 10 B) 1. Draw a diagonal line on the backs of eighty 2 1 2" Tonga B9054 Fennel squares. 2. For Unit A: Place the " squares on each corner of the " JT C8589 Beige stitch Snowball block squares. Sew along the drawn line. trim Trim the seam to 1/4". Repeat with the remaining nine 6 1 2" JT C8589 Beige squares. The unit should measure " square. Make ten. (figure 1) 3. For Unit B: Repeat step 2 with the remaining 2 1 2" squares and the " JT C9053 Clay squares. Make ten. Elongated Flying Geese Unit 4. Sew a left and right B template Tonga B9054 Fennel to each side of the A template Tonga B7737 Rouge. The unit should measure " square. Make eighty. (figure 2) Unit 1 5. Sew a 2 1 2" Tonga B9054 Fennel square to each side of the elongated flying geese unit. Make eighty. The unit should measure 2 1 2" x 6 1 2". (figure 3) Unit 2 Note: There are five variations of Unit 2. Each should measure " x ". (figure 4) Unit 2a fig. 1 fig. 4 Unit 2 fig. 2 fig. 3 Unit 1 6. Sew one 2 7 8" JT-8590 Mocha HST to the right side of Unit 1. Sew one 2 7 8" HST JT C8591 Sepia to the left side of unit 1. Make seventeen. Unit 2b 7. Sew one 2 7 8" JT C8591 Sepia HST to the right side of Unit 1. Sew one 2 7 8" HST JT-8590 Mocha to the left side of Unit 1. Make five.

3 Unit 2c 8. Sew one 2 7 8" Tonga B9056 Rust HST to the right and one to the left side of unit 1. Make fourteen. Unit 2d 9. Sew one 2 7 8" JT C8590 Mocha HST to the right side of Unit 1. Sew one 2 7 8" Tonga B9056 Rust HST to the left side of Unit 1. Make two. Unit 2e 10. Sew one 2 7 8" JT C8591 Sepia HST to the right side of Unit 1. Sew one 2 7 8" Tonga B9056 Rust HST to the left side of Unit 1. Make two. 11. Sew one Unit 1 to the left and one to the right side of a Snowball unit. (figure 5) Unit Make the following sets with the Snowball blocks A and B and Units 2a through 2e as shown in figure 6. Make twenty total. : Three Unit 2a/A/Unit 2a. : Three Unit 2a/B/Unit 2a. #3: Two Unit 2a/A/Unit 2c. #4: Two Unit 2b/B/Unit 2c. : Three Unit 2a/B/Unit 2c. : Three Unit 2b/A/Unit 2c. #7: One Unit 2e/A/Unit 2c. #8: One Unit 2e/B/Unit 2c. #9: One Unit 2d/B/Unit 2c. 0: One Unit 2d/A/Unit 2c. Unit Sew one 2 7 8" Tonga B9054 Fennel HST to each side of a " Tonga B9054 Fennel square. Make eighty. (figure 7) 14. Matching seams, sew one Unit 4 to each side of Unit 3. (figure 8) 15. Sew the 6 7 8" Tonga B9056 Rust, JT C8591 Sepia, or JT C8590 Mocha HST to the sides of the block matching the small 2 7 8" HST in the sides of the blocks. (figure 9) Quilt Top Center Construction 16. Following figure 10, lay out the blocks four across and five down, rotating blocks as shown. Fabrics in adjacent corners should match. 17. Sew the blocks together in horizontal rows, then sew the rows together to make the quilt top center. fig. 8 fig. 6 Unit 3 fig. 7 Unit 4 fig. 5 fig. 9 Border Construction Right Unit 18. Draw a diagonal line on the backs of the 4" JT C8586 Amber, JT-8588 Blush, and Tonga B7737 Rouge squares. 19. Right sides together, place one 4" Tonga B7377 Rouge square on the top of one 4" x " Tonga B9056 Fennel rectangle. (figure 11) (Tip: If you want the stripes to all go in the same direction [horizontally], place the square in a vertical position before sewing.) Sew on the marked line and trim seam to 1/4". Make thirty-six. 20. Right sides together, place one 4" JT C8588 Blush square on the bottom of the Fennel rectangle. Sew on the marked line and trim the seam to 1/4". (figure 12) Left Unit 21. Right sides together, place one 4" Tonga B7377 Rouge square on the top of one 4" x " Tonga B9055 Sunrise rectangle. (Tip: If you want the stripes to all go in the same direction [horizontally], place the square in a vertical position before sewing.) Sew on the marked line and trim the seam to 1/4". (figure 13) Sew on the marked line and trim seam to 1/4". Make thirty-six. 22. Right sides together, place one 4" JT C8586 Amber square on the bottom of the Sunrise rectangle. (figure 14) Sew on the marked line and trim the seam to 1/4". Border Assembly 23. Sew one Right Unit and one Left Unit together, matching seams to create a Border Unit. (figure 15) 24. Sew two sets of ten Border Units each together to create the Side Border Units. 4 25. Sew two sets of eight Border Units each together, matching seams to create a Top and Bottom Border Unit. 26. Sew two 7 7 8" Tonga B7737 Rouge HSTs together matching the stripes at the diagonal center to look like a mitered corner. Make four. 27. Sew one Rouge pieced square to each side of the Top and Bottom Border Units. 28. Sew the borders to the top and bottom of the quilt top center. 29. Sew the eight " Tonga B9054 Fennel strips together using diagonal seams. Measure through the vertical quilt center and cut two strips this length. Sew to the quilt top sides. 30. Measure through the horizontal center and cut the remaining strip into two pieces this length. Sew to quilt top and bottom. 31. Repeat steps 29 and 30 with the eight 2 1 2" Tonga B9056 Rust strips to make the outer border. Finishing 32. Layer the quilt top, batting and backing and quilt as desired. 33. Stitch the binding strips together end to end using diagonal seams. Fold and press the resulting long strip in half lengthwise with wrong sides together. Stitch to the quilt front, matching raw edges and mitering the corners. 34. Fold the binding to the quilt underside and hand-stitch the folded edge to the quilt back. Templates A B 2" Note: To insure that the sewing line at the base of the A triangle (heavy black line) measures 2", print this pattern with Page Scaling turned OFF.
