A Letter From the President, Jeni Christensen I ve just recently been to the annual IQG officer s retreat and nothing gets the creative juices flowing better than hangin with my quilting peeps!

For those of you contemplating volunteering to be an officer, there is no better way to make new friends than doing so and best of all.you get to attend the officer s retreat!

We ve been working on completing some projects including replacement of the staircase, which we totally demolished and replaced several years back, and now finally have the gumption to make pretty.

1 A Letter From the President, Jeni Christensen I ve just recently been to the annual IQG officer s retreat and nothing gets the creative juices flowing better than hangin with my quilting peeps! We were missing several of our usual attendees, but still managed to enjoy ourselves immensely. For those of you contemplating volunteering to be an officer, there is no better way to make new friends than doing so and best of all.you get to attend the officer s retreat! Like always I ve got my multiple irons in the creative fires and I m sure most of you do as well. My husband and I are back to work, after a lengthy hiatus, on our 1920 s brick home. We ve been working on completing some projects including replacement of the staircase, which we totally demolished and replaced several years back, and now finally have the gumption to make pretty. Walking down my beautiful new steps every morning I m reminded of all the new wall space that is nearly ready for some wall quilts. All I want to do then is stay home and paint them or think about ideas for said quilts. This makes the trip to work hazardous as it hinders my observations of four -legged friends who wish to put some excitement in my day. Thankfully the weather has been good so snow has not been an added risk factor recently or my Honda would most certainly have been laid to rest by now. However, this lack of snow is beginning to get old as one of my hopes for this winter has been to make an attempt at ice dyeing fabric. I could do it with ice, but that just doesn t seem as exciting as using snow. The lack of snow has also hindered me from having glorious snow days on which I am happily trapped at home sewing all day. The agriculturalist/ horticulturalist in me is complaining as well because I know a lack of snow means dry, exposed soil which means no dead nasty bugs and too many dead perennial plants. So come on Mother Nature send us some snow! Just make it all melt by March so we can all make it to the March IQG event in Denison. Finally an event in western Iowa! It s been awhile since we ve been out west, but we have the perfect place and an excellent event planned. We ll be at the lovely Boulder Resort and best of all there will be a quilt show, vendors, and a fantastic teacher! I hope to see you all there. 2 March Event Features Grace Errea Iowa Quilters Guild invites you to our spring quilting event. We ll have the pleasure of holding this event in coordination with the Heart to Heart Quilt Guild quilt show (with vendors!) this same weekend in the banquet room next to our workshop room. Quilt Show hours will be Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sat from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A sit and sew room will also be available for those not taking the workshop(s). GRACE ERREA WILL BE THE GUEST SPEAKER Fiber artist, designer, quilter, and author, Grace J. Errea, began quilting in Her art focuses on the depiction of inspiring scenes in a value based contemporary-realistic manner. She feels very fortunate to have many of her first quilts become exhibited in juried shows and be recognized for their innovation in technique and depiction of nature and people. In 2005 she chose to retire from a very successful career as an executive in a Fortune 500 computer and telecommunications company to devote herself to her art on a full-time basis. Grace is a self-taught artist and her work illustrates and has been recognized for exceptional primary use of values and secondary use of color. Her focus on value makes it easy for her and her students to create inspiring botanicals, landscape scenes and portraits, in any color. Grace s innovative techniques and her focus on value have attracted widespread interest from quilters, as well as national and international galleries, museums and publications. She has been invited to show her art and to teach overseas and in various locations in the United States. Her class offerings are well attended, in demand, and are presented in fun, informal, and educational manner. Grace presents 1-hour lectures as well as 1-5 day workshops at guild meetings, conferences and seminars. Lectures include Trunk Show or The Value of Value presentation. Her style is informative, humorous and inspiring with many real-time, hands-on examples. Reviews and Surveys have always been 5++ out of 5, and return participation in other classes and lectures is always high. Grace designs patterns and quilts for Hoffman of California Fabrics in Mission Viejo, CA. She is the author of the C&T book entitled: Impressionist Applique - Exploring Value and Design to Create Artistic Quilts, Grace is the authority of how to use Value to develop amazing art quilts. Grace appeared with Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims demonstrating her Value and Machine Applique techniques on The Quilt Show, episode Grace currently resides, quilts, and teaches in Southern California. She and her husband have two daughters, Julia and Lauren, and two cats, Thelma and Louise. 2

3 Friday, March 20th, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. EXPLORING VALUE IN QUILTING This 1-Day class focuses on Value and its importance in art. The various aspects of color harmonies, value, color theory, psychology of color, the expressive aspects of color and value in nature and in art/quilts will be discussed and demonstrated. At completion of the class students will see value and color in a new way and will start releasing the artist within. Students will learn how to use Value to create a focal point, to set the mood in a piece, to create 3-dimensionality or to give the perception of perspective in a landscape. We will start by creating a perfect 8-value gray scale from fabrics provided by the teacher. Then, using your own fabric chips that you will bring, in the other hues (red, blue, yellow, green, purple, and orange) we will create the Periodic Table of Value in Color. By the end of the class you will realize that value is the dynamic difference between good quilts and amazing quilts. Workshop Fee: $50 (non-refundable) Grace will provide (kit fee $10.00) Fabric for the 8-Value Gray scale to start the Periodic Table Startup fabric and materials for the A Value Fan Students will provide: Poster board, approx. 20 X 22 Glue Stick or fabric safe glue/basting glue Paper and fabric scissors Pens, pencils Rotary cutter and board and 24 ruler Color wheel (small is OK) Array of fabrics (small scraps). All colors (yellow, red, blue, purple, green, orange), and many values and textures. We are trying to build the perfect 9-value scale for each color so the more values you bring, the better the chance of completing your Periodic Table. Fabrics should be Tone on tone (has a pattern or design which is the same color than the background fabric but darker or lighter and is seen as one color) Do not bring scraps with obvious prints or designs, such as florals, checks, etc. These will not work for this class. Scraps of approx. 2 X 3 are all you need. The key is to have all the possible VALUES (variations from very light to very dark) that you can. These will be used to create the 8-value scale for each color. Friday, March 20th, 7 p.m. TRUNK SHOW GRACE ERREA Grace will take us on a trip through her quilting journey. Please join us for Grace s lecture and the alwaysamazing IQG Show and Tell. Bring your projects and show off what you ve been working on. This lecture is open to the public. In this class you will learn to use an applique technique so new and revolutionary that you will use nothing else once you try it. It is easy, foolproof and the results are always amazing. This technique leaves the quilt and the fabric soft and manageable, not stiff and board-like, as fusible webs and glues do. The best however, is that you can do raw edge applique without any fraying edges!! You will be amazed and love the process and the results, and will never go back to fusing, gluing, or pinning and stitching with nylon threads, ever again. Workshop Fee: $50 (non-refundable) Grace will provide (kit fee $18.00) Pattern (your choice from those pictured below) and the Heat-Set product used in the new technique. Ensure you bring lots of fabric scraps in many values. From lights to darkest darks. Fabric scraps can be any sizes from palm-size to fat quarters. If you are doing the Bird of Paradise pattern, please bring 1/4 yards as there are some long pieces in the pattern. In some patterns the background is created in the same manner as the focal point. Summer in the Canyon is an example. The other patterns need a whole cloth background. Verify the quilt size as documented on the web, but most quilts do not exceed 24 by 36. For the latter, choose fabrics that do not have a distinctive pattern and are light in value for dark focal points, or dark in value for light focal points. For landscapes, be aware of directional fabrics for sky, water, or the backgrounds. Other necessary supplies: Board 20 X 30 Insulation Board (usually 1 1/4 thick). You can get it at Home Depot, Lowe s or any building supply stores. If you can handle a 30 X 40 that is even better, but the smaller will work too Brush- soft A 1/4 wide Pens Sharpie permanent markers FINE point, one black and one red, and ballpoint (NOT extra fine) Pins- Extra Thin Silk Pins Other optional supplies: Scissors fabric and paper A piece of Insul-Bright the size of your board, for board protection Tweezers long handled Iron (several will be available for the classroom, but you may want to Craft Knife, such as Xacto bring a small travel or Clover iron for your own use. Bring your own extension cord. 4

Long Time Member Has Passed Away Janice Eifling, 68, of Ames, passed away January 16, 2015 at Israel Family Hospice House.

Janice Kaye Eifling was born August 1, 1946 to Martin Henry and Rosalee Shinley Eifling at St. Vincent's Infirmary, Little Rock, Arkansas.

She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas in 1968 and in 1969, a Master of Science in Bio-Medical Library Science from the Graduate School of

8 Long Time Member Has Passed Away Janice Eifling, 68, of Ames, passed away January 16, 2015 at Israel Family Hospice House. A memorial gathering for Janice will be held Saturday, April 18, 2015 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the North Park Villa Clubhouse 2932 Northwestern Avenue in Ames. Janice Kaye Eifling was born August 1, 1946 to Martin Henry and Rosalee Shinley Eifling at St. Vincent's Infirmary, Little Rock, Arkansas. Janice graduated high school from Crystal Springs Consolidated School in Crystal Springs, Mississippi. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas in 1968 and in 1969, a Master of Science in Bio-Medical Library Science from the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois in Urbana- Champaign, Illinois. She worked as a scientific librarian at the USDA National Centers for Animal Health in Ames, beginning in 1969 and retiring in October Janice was a very active member of the Iowa Quilters Guild. She was an integral part of the IQG serving as newsletter editor for thirteen years and enjoyed participating in IQG retreats, classes, and the bi-annual quilt show. Janice was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan and a dedicated Cyclones fan. Janice is survived by her sisters, Pamela Eifling Russell and Carol Eifling Gies; and her faithful cockatiel, Sunny. She was preceded in death by her parents. A note about Janice from Jeni Christensen "Janice was one of the first people in IQG that I got to know. I always enjoyed sitting with her at retreats and talking about some of the scientific work she supported as the librarian at the USDA facility in Ames. She always loved to make quilts for her dear family and often made them from bright, wild fabrics like those created by Kaffe Fasset. She was a lovely lady and I regret not having opportunities to connect with her during her recent illness. We've lost a great quilter and an even better friend." WE VE MOVED!
