1 Wes Iseli & Party Magic The Magic & Illusion Show Newsletter Volume 6 Issue 4 Special points of interest: A magic show review Magic news Trick of the month Entertainment news Party Magic news Back on the road again Since last month s fiasco, when we broke down in West Virginia, we had our van in the garage for 3 weeks. We had Natalie s Mercury Mountaineer loaded down so we could get to shows. It is not a fun experience. Well it turned out that my van needed a new engine, a new windshield, new tires, and new brakes. With a four hour tow, miscellaneous other small things, and labor, we spent $8, on our show van. This time of year we start to work on new magic for our new season. I am planning on building a new illusion where I can magically appear from an empty box at the beginning of our show. April 2013 With our new season fast approaching we are adding to our show and repainting other equipment as well as doing everything we can to put on a first rate family show. Lots of small changes can really add up. This year is going to be our best yet! Duane Laflin Duane has a unique combination of skills and abilities. He loves putting on shows, is an expert in the art of the illusionist, and is well grounded in the Scripture. In every program he makes it clear that God does miracles, I only do tricks! Audiences marvel at his illusions, but the way he illustrates the gospel is even more amazing. ON THE SECULAR LEVEL Duane is an internationally awarded performer. In South Africa he was honored as a guest instructor at the Siegfried and Roy College Of Magic. (Cont) The prestigious Magic Circle, out of London, England, awarded him as a Member Of The Inner Magic Circle With Gold Star, which is the highest honor granted on the basis of merit. Along with international credits, he was a star performer in the Magic Beyond Belief theater in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee for two years. The show featured tigers and grand illusions. He also starred in Grand Magic at the Grand Majestic Theater in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. His Grand Magic Show is now located in Custer, SD, not far from Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Monument (see Duane s showmanship and abilities on stage are sensational, but the important thing is that he loves the Lord and is committed to using his skills to share spiritual truth. Natalie & I were lucky enough to work with Duane when we were asked to headline the Fellowship of Christian Magicians convention in Ohio. Duane was an amazing performer and we hit it off right away. He was a wealth of knowledge and didn t mind helping out any magicians who came to him with questions. At the end of the weekend Natalie & I were honored when Duane said he saw my passion for magic and offered to mentor us and help with direction and with adding production value to our illusion show. We have kept in contact since and are planning a trip to Custer, SD in September for more hands on training. Now, Rio Las Vegas headliners Penn & Teller have their very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The Event took place on Apr. 5, 2013 with a speech given by David Copperfield, among others. Not only are they known all over the world as magicians, but here are a few other P&T facts: Emmy award winning for their PBS magic special Guest appearances on numerous shows Their TV show Bulls**t ran for 8 years on Showtime Author of several books on magic They starred in Fool US a British reality show about magic They are truly stars and I think it is about time they were honored. I have been thinking about this for a while and while watching my daughter digging into her Easter basket it reminded me of this effect. They do a great job on getting entertainers from all over the world to lecture and perform in the Gala show which is held on the last night. At the last minute I found out I was able to attend this year s convention. The worst part was that Natalie & I decided she & Lana would stay at home for this trip; I really missed my girls. This year s convention had Disney Illusionist Brad Ross, John Payne, John Carlson and last, but definitely not least, Juliana Chen. I know these names mean nothing to most of my readers, but to magicians they are a great get for such a small convention. As most of you know, I am not only a magician & Illusionist but I am a collector of magic, a history buff when it comes to magic, and I am a huge all around fan of magic. The main reason I wanted to attend this year s convention was to meet Juliana Chen who is the only female ever to win FISM or The Olympics of Magic. She was not only an amazing talent but a really sweet person and took time out to teach me a few of her award winning secrets. John Carlson and Brad Ross spoke about marketing and John Payne surprised me with an amazing lecture on showmanship and getting the most out of your props. Close-up, stand up, illusions: Wes does it all and often performs with his wife Natalie. He s also the owner of his own entertainment agency called Party Magic and often conducts lectures for other magicians. Some years back, I met Wes and Natalie when they were in Southern California on their honeymoon. Over the years, we ve stayed in touch and I ve admired their charitable work. Since 2007, Wes has performed his 24 Hours of Magic show where he stands in front of a Walmart and performs magic for 24hours and collects money on behalf of a charity. Wes recently took time out to talk with Magic.About.com. I hope that through this interview Wes inspires magicians to pursue and support important causes of their own. Wayne Kawamoto: How do you support charities and what was your inspiration? Wes Iseli: I support a bunch of charities in different ways. I give blood as often as I can, I offer discounted shows to charities and/or help them get sponsors so I can perform for them for free. I have a video commercial on YouTube titled Wes Iseli's Team Fox Commercial I also support Relay for life and have been performing my 24-hour magic show every year since 2007 which raises money for The Children s Miracle Network. My dad was diagnosed with Parkinson s disease when I was seven years old and I watched that disease turn him into a shell of a man over the next 18 years. He died from Cancer which was not found because the Parkinson s medication masked his symptoms. WK: Please tell me about your 24 Hours of Magic. WI: I racked my brain for about a year wanting to do something big at Christmas time as a way to inspire others and give back. I set up a booth in front of a local Walmart performing close up magic while asking for donations for the charity. I do it outside in the cold on the sidewalk, which sounds crazy but if I were inside and warm it wouldn t be as much of a news story. I advertise 24 hours of magic or 72 shows in 24 hours. I guarantee ten minutes on and ten minutes off for the entire 24 hours but work more than that during busy times and in the middle of the night I try to keep an audience as long as I can because at that point they are entertaining me and keeping me busy. The best part is I always get newspaper coverage and TV news to cover me as well. The synopsis is: FBI agents track a team of illusionists who pull off bank heists during their performances and reward their audiences with the money. With a cast like Morgan Freeman, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson, Michael Cain, Jessie Eisenberg, Common & more it should be great. With a star studded cast and an estimated 70 million on budget this movie will hopefully be the magic equivalent to Ocean s Eleven. You gotta see the trailer, it is available on IMDB and youtube. This movie hit theaters on May 31st 2013.

Teach a Trick / Spelling card trick Effect: From a shuffled deck of cards you are able to find a chosen card just by spelling its name. Secret: From a shuffled pack of cards deal 3 piles of 3. Get rid of the rest of the pack. Choose a card by turning over 1 of the packs of 3 (lets say they chose 6 of hearts). Put the other packs together then turn over the chosen pack and place it on top. You then start spelling, putting down one card per letter. First word six then place everything on top pick up the pile and spell of then place everything on top and spell hearts then place everything on top and spell magic. The C in magic will be the chosen card. Tip: Practice this a bunch before showing your friends. The hardest part of this is remembering the steps.
