2 About LOOSE CHANGE BUSKERS About Cancer Research UK Loose Change Buskers are an extraordinary group of volunteers who busk in aid of Cancer Research UK in and around South Manchester. Their commitment to Cancer Research UK has won them numerous local and national accolades. In 2016 they received the prestigious Queen s Award for Voluntary Service, the MBE for volunteer groups, and in 2015 they won a Cancer Research UK Flame of Hope award for Fundraising in the Community. In December 2016 they appeared on BBC North West after being awarded a coveted special Christmas Star Award. Founded by Bernard Dolan from Timperley and Altrincham-based John Fogel, Loose Change Buskers made their first appearance at the Stamford Quarter in Altrincham. Since then they ve not looked back, busking every weekend in town centres, supermarkets, local markets and any other gigs they can attend across South Manchester, raising on average 2,000 a weekend! Loose Change Buskers not only raise vital funds for Cancer Research UK each weekend, they also help to raise cancer awareness in South Manchester. Bernard and John said: It s touching hearing the public s stories as to why they donate, it makes us feel like we are doing something to help. Without donations from the public to Loose Change Buskers, Cancer Research UK wouldn t be able to do their work in finding cures for cancer. We are doing all we can to beat cancer sooner. Cancer touches many people, including Loose Change Buskers themselves who have sadly lost two of their members, Dave Shannon and Mike Moratos to the disease over the past 6 years. These men were an inspiration to them and they will continue in their memory, rain or shine. Loose change buskers have raised 325,000 since Last year the group performed at more than 175 Cancer Research UK is the world s leading cancer charity dedicated to saving lives through research. Our vision is to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. Half of us will hear the words I m sorry, you have cancer at some point in our lives. This is a scary statistic, but thanks to Cancer Research UK more people are surviving cancer. 40 years ago, 1 in every 4 people diagnosed with cancer would survive their disease. Today that figure is 2 in 4. Thanks to research we know more about cancer and how to prevent, diagnose, control and treat it than ever before. Our ambition is that 3 in 4 people will be surviving cancer by Every day, around 112 people are diagnosed with cancer in the North West. Last year, we spent over 23 million on some of the UK s best scientific and clinical research in the North West. We fund ground-breaking research throughout the region, from our own Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute, to cutting edge research in Liverpool. We want to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured, and we need your support. We receive no government funding so we really do rely on all of our amazing supporters to fund our lifesaving research. And thanks to their generosity our scientists, doctors and nurses are leading the world in discovering new ways to fight cancer. Research saves lives and our work is critical to ensuring more people beat this devastating disease. Without groups like Loose Change Buskers, we would not be able to carry out our worldclass research. However, they need your help to continue their amazing fundraising work.
