Avoid excessive impact against hard surfaces, and contact with perfumes, cosmetics and household chemicals. Never remove jewelry by pulling directly on any of the stones. As with all jewelry, regular cleaning is important as soaps, lotions and other everyday build-up can reduce the brilliance of the stone. To clean your Desert Diamonds jewelry, use either a mild solution of 6 parts water to one part ammonia or a commercially available nonabrasive jewelry cleaner, and apply with a very soft non-metallic bristled brush. Ultra sonic cleaning is not safe for many gemstones so we advise against this method. Professional cleaning and servicing (which includes checking the setting and prongs) is highly recommended at least once a year. All of our 18k & 14k white gold jewelry and 925 sterling silver jewelry is rhodium plated to improve its appearance. Sterling silver jewelry that has been rhodium plated requires less maintenance. The jewelry will not tarnish when the rhodium protective coating is in tact. Rhodium plating wears away over time - do not use abrasive cleaners as this will wear away the protective coating faster. To prevent jewelry from tarnishing and help retain its luster, items should be re-plated with rhodium every months depending on the amount of wear and tear the item has endured. Ca for Rose Gold and Non-plated Silver Jewelry Rose gold is a gold and copper alloy and has a subtle and delicate color that may intensify somewhat with age due to a slight, but attractive, tarnishing of the copper. Rose gold cannot be plated, as can silver and white gold, so a certain amount of tarnishing is inevitable. Exposure to the atmosphere and moisture hastens the tarnishing process of both rose gold and nonplated silver jewelry. To reduce tarnishing and keep your jewelry looking good: A jewelry cloth is the most effective and safest way of cleaning tarnished jewelry. Rub with a lengthwise motion, avoid clean in a circular motion because this may cause scratches. To remove the tarnish from hard to reach areas, use a commercially available nonabrasive jewelry cleaner and a very soft brush like a child's tooth brush to get into the crevices. Using toothpaste or baking soda is not recommended as these may be too abrasive. To reduce tarnish, store your jewelry in an airtight protective bag made of tarnish proof cloth or you can use a plastic zip lock bag. The gold we use in our 18k&14kCollection is solid 18k and 14k gold respectively and not gold plating as used by some of our competitors. Our 925 Collection is made from high quality rhodium plated sterling silver. Gold Karatage A karat, when used with gold, is a measure of purity. 24-karat gold is pure gold, but its purity means it is more expensive and less durable than gold that is alloyed with other metals. Different alloys such as copper and silver are mixed with gold for greater strength, durability and color range. The karatage of the jewelry will tell you what percentage of gold it contains: 24 karat is 100 percent, 18 karat is 75 percent, and 14 karat is 58 percent gold. Europeans have long embraced 18-karat gold, or 750 parts per thousand pure gold, as their metal of choice. In the United States, 14-karat gold, or 585 parts pure gold, is more commonly used. All other things being equal, the higher the karat, the more valuable the piece.
