6 M A S T E R S T O U C H master s touch Attaching Omega Backs omega backs are a comfortable alternative to tension backs on pierced earrings. The omega back will also help the earring to hang properly. 1. To attach an Omega back, first remove the existing earring post. Remove all signs of solder and prepolish the earring. 2. In this case, the earring post will be relocated and soldered to a jump ring that was originally part of the earring. If the back of the jump ring is smooth, use a small round bur to create a recessed area for the earring post to rest in, then solder. The solder joint should be smooth without excess solder or pits Hold the Omega back against the earring to determine where the base of the Omega back should be positioned. Proper placement puts the earring post into the center of the Omega s loop There should be enough distance between the back of the earring and the Omega loop to accommodate the earlobe. Adjust the length of the Omega base by marking off the excess length. 5. Saw and file the base of the Omega clip to fit the contour of the earring. 6. To prepare for soldering, disassemble the Omega clip from the base by removing the riveting pin. The clip itself should not be submitted to heat, because the metal will lose its tension or spring Solder the omega yoke base to the earring using easy solder. Pickle and clean off residue from soldering. 8. Prepolish the earring before reassembling the omega clip. 9. To reassemble the omega clip. Cut the rivet wire shorter; leaving approximately.5mm extended length on each side of the post. Place the earring on a steel anvil so that one side of the riveting pin is against the anvil. Lightly tap the pin. Turn the earring over and repeat the motion. Do this until the rivet has expanded on the ends and will not push out of the hinge. 10.
