5 F E AT U R E D P R O D U C T S master s touch Easy setting, cushion style setting a cushion-cut stone is not a difficult task, if the right steps are taken. We follow a standard operating procedure in the setting of all of our stones. When preparing to set a cushion-cut stone, we first measure the stone. Once it is determined that we have the correct size stone for the mounting, we can then move forward. Before determining which bur and style will be used to set the cushion cut stones, we must be aware of two key things: the overall thickness of the stone and the girdle size. If the stone is thin and has little girdle, a 45 bur is recommended. Using a 90 bur, in this case, may cause you to over cut the seat and prove difficult in securing a tight fit for the stone. A 45 bur will cut a much thinner seat and proves to be the better choice for this task. If the stone is thick and has a wide girdle, a 90 bur should be used to cut your seat. A bud bur may be your best choice to open the seat up a little to allow room for the girdle. The next step in the process is checking the fit and making sure the stone sits level. Before advancing to the next step, check to see if you need to make adjustments in your cutting. Please remember to remove any flashing caused by your burs. This is the time to use light polish inside the bearing area to promote a cleaner, more couture look. The stone is now ready to be seated in the mounting and tightened. There are several ways to obtain a secure fit. Use the pliers to apply pressure to the prongs. This will cause them to make contact with the stone securing a tight fit. Once this step is completed, all that is left is to prep the prongs and put the final polish on the piece. Good luck and good setting. 7 C U S T O M P R O G R A M Custom Designs the Beauty of the bench Charles Baltayan with Charles M. Baltayan Jewelers in Hamden, CT sent us a photo of a pendant to be given to a mother of twins. The grandfather wanted to give something to commemorate the twins christening. Baltayan used a framework of in 14kt white to which he added the family birthstones, 14kt white, 2.5X1mm flat sizing stock and 3mm diamond cut rounds: Blue Zircon for the father; Aquamarine for the mother; Ceylon Sapphire for the daughter and AA Blue Sapphire for the son. I set crowns, created with the sizing stock, but ended up setting the stones into the channel directly for a much more tailored look. The pendant left with the very happy Grandfather at 3:30 on Saturday, just in time for the Sunday christening! The second piece Charles sent us was the pair of earring jackets you see below. Using two stock pieces that he modified to make smaller, he then soldered his pieces together to make earring jackets. He then set the diamonds. Parts used in this job included 23254, 15mm 14kt yellow trim; 23254, 20mm, 14kt yellow trim; and many 1.5mm yellow and white round brilliants. Then snap locking mechanism into place, holding tension on the mounting 3 Find the hole that represents your range and align with the bottom of the shank towards the locking mechanism. Using guide pins, clear top should snap into place. Now, place metal drill guide into selected hole. 4 Choose the one of four end mill bits (1.2, 1.5, 1.75, and 2.0mm) offered by Stuller, which matches your already determined Preform stock thickness to drill through the shank. 5 Using a chuck style hand piece and flex shaft, insert end mill bit into the metal drill guide. The metal drill guide will keep the end mill perfectly straight as you drill through the shank. 6 Use caution as you are drilling by using very light pressure. Let the end mill do the cutting for you. Do not let the bit bottom out at the end of the cut, which could overcut the half-moon piercing. 7 Remove the clear 6- hole top and unclamp the mounting from the vise.
