1 Due Date: Week 3B Term 3 Wednesday 30 th July (7Tec4) Thursday 31 st July (7Tec2) Lost Wax Casting & Silver Mining (Research Assignment) 20 Marks Unit: Lost Wax Casting & Silver Mining Context This unit of work involves research into the processes involved to produce a silver ring via the Lost Wax Process. It also looks at the process of silver mining in Australia and how that process affects the environment around us.

2 Part 1 Lost Wax Casting (Research Assignment) As you progress through this rotation, you will be making a ring. At first you will be required to produce a model of your ring which will be made out of wax. The purpose of this activity is for you to research how your Wax Model is turned into an attractive silver ring. Outcomes A Student: Generates and communicates creative design ideas and solutions Description of activity: Research and explain the Lost Wax process. You are to provide the following; Your Task: Your task is broken into 2 parts as outlined below; A flow-chart of labeled diagrams that depict how the Lost Wax process is used to produce Part a One: cast Management silver ring. Use Folio textboxes - You and are arrows to include to explain the following; each diagram. Flow-chart set out clearly including: 1. Correct Complete order an of accurate process materials list and costing spreadsheet /2 / 1 Text boxes /1 Arrows /1 Diagrams /1 Accurate information provided IN YOUR OWN WORDS /5 Note: All of the diagrams and text should not exceed two A4 pages You MUST use diagrams or images not just text Criteria for assessing learning Students will be assessed on their ability to: communicate information appropriate to specified audiences compose a design folio for a specific audience in electronic format including features such as tabs, indents, headers and footers, margins and line and paragraph spacing and using appropriate layout and graphic design Go to the Silver Jewellery Website for the information you need to create your flow chart:

4 Part 2 - Silver Mining within Australia (Research Assignment) This activity aims to make students aware of silver mining companies within Australia. Students will also discuss the impact of one of those mines on it s immediate environment and what the company is doing to minimise that impact. Outcomes A Student: Identifies and explains ethical, social, environmental and sustainability considerations related to design projects Description of activity: Students are to investigate the following points and present them on or before the due date typed into a word document and printed out. Your Task: Your task is broken into 2 parts as outlined below; 1) Choose one (1) Australian mining company from the useful resources below that Part One: Management Folio - You are to include the following; mines silver in Australia and provide a map with the mine s location. / 2 2. Complete an accurate materials list and costing spreadsheet / 1 2) List and explain the negative effects silver mining has on its surrounding environment. / 3 3) Describe how mining companies try to minimise these negative effects on the environment. / 4 4) Provide a bibliography / 1 Criteria for assessing learning Students will be assessed on their ability to: identify ethical, social, and environmental and sustainability considerations relevant to each design project Go to the Silver Jewellery Website for the information you need for your research
