11 Over 50 years ago A Little Apple Hill History! What could have been the end of agriculture in El Dorado County became the cornerstone of Agritourism for a handful of Camino farmers!! The year was The largest crop, pears, was an economic driver for the county.! Pear growers, pickers, packers and shippers depended on the pear crop for their livelihoods.! A disease called pear decline destroyed nearly all of the pear orchards within months.! A few apple trees were untouched by the disease and a handful of farmers decided to plant apples in what were once pear orchards.

12 Community Support The early years!! By 1964, the apples were thriving. A group of 16 farmers banded together to market their fruit: The association, Apple Hill Growers was born!! Everyone in the community supported the farmers. Even Sacramento newspapers and television stations supported their effort.

13 An Apple a Day An industry was born! In the early years, visitors began to flock to the original 16 farms to participate in a new concept called Ranch Marketing.! Not only were dozens of varieties of apples available by the bushel box, apple pies, apple cakes, apple cider--apple EVERYTHING were on the Apple Hill Growers product lists.! Today, Ranch Marketing, especially in the wine industry, has become a very successful business model
