The event, held at the Westwood Club, focused on career transition and the importance of taking control of your career. The panel, moderated by Nancy Murphy, former VP Law & Public Policy, Adelphia, consisted of Pam MacKenzie, former VP/GM Adelphia-Cleveland, Ohio, Samantha Otero, Labor Employment Lawyer, Christian & Barton, LLC, Terrie Glass, Career Consultant, Lee Hecht Harrison and Nancy Conkright, Director of Professional Services, Lee Hecht Harrison. The panel left the group with the following advice: Realize the importance of flexibility. Be informed. Look at potential crisis as an opportunity and stay positive. Use your network of friends, work acquaintances and family members to help you in a potential job search or change. Balance is the most effective thing to stay personally resilient through a transition. Focus on career value -- know who you are, what you have a passion to do, and what skills you have to sell yourself. 7 Cox Communications Northern VA, Janet Barnard Takes the Helm Cox NOVA s new Vice President and Region Manager Janet Barnard never even had cable service until she entered the cable business in 1988, when she joined Cox s Macon system as an accounting manager. Since then, the Nebraska native has held positions as controller, director of finance and director of business operations in Ocala and Gainesville, Fla., as well as vice president of business operations and general manager in Omaha, Neb. Prior to NOVA, she was the vice president and region manager for Middle America Cox. After graduating from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln with a bachelor s degree in business administration, Janet and her husband Bryan purchased a farm. They farmed hogs, cattle and crops in Nebraska in the 1980s a tough time for the farm industry. To help make ends meet, she worked as a staff accountant for a company that builds bridges. When the farm failed, she decided to find a job that would develop into a career. Janet called an old friend, whom she had met at her first summer job out of high school, to ask if she could use him as a reference. The friend had since moved on to Cox Communications in Macon, and coincidentally had an opening for an accounting manager. Janet and her husband packed a U-Haul and their two daughters, then aged 2 and 6, and moved east to Georgia. She s never looked back. This is a very addictive business, Janet said. Cox has been a great fit for me because it is constantly changing. I thrive on new, innovative things and that s what this business is about. In the coming weeks, she and the senior team will be developing a strategic priority plan. This will include focusing on the competition. With our strong image and marketing tactics, employees should feel really good about where we are at this time, she said. But we must be prepared for anything. We feel like it s very competitive today, but I know Verizon hasn t even started. Verizon will get personal and we must have a very strong offensive game plan so that we stay out of reactive mode. We need to start to feel like a Coke or Pepsi. Coke employees don t eat at Pepsi-owned restaurants. Another strategic priority is phone. This is a big growth opportunity for Cox NOVA, which Janet wants to take advantage of. I have an expectation of myself that there is 100% ownership. I expect this of others, too. Janet and her husband recently purchased a house in the Oak Hill area of Fairfax County. The Barnards are huge sports fans, particularly of Nebraska Cornhuskers football, and spend their free time watching and going to sporting events. In addition, they own a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, which Janet enjoys riding while her husband drives. They have two daughters Shannon, 24, who started her first job as a pharmacist in Dallas the same day Janet started at NOVA; and Cacy, 20, an advertising/public relations major at Texas Christian University
