1 Nominations for Standing Committee Positions Available (4-year term): 1 Clergy; 1 Lay Communicant Standing Committee Clergy Nominees The Rev. Dr. Gary Butterworth, All Saints, Gastonia Nominated by: The Rev. Chris Beebe The Rev. Dr. Gary Butterworth has served the church for 25+ years, currently as Rector of All Saints, Gastonia. He recently served as Chair for The Diocesan Bishop s Search Committee. He currently serves the diocese as Chair of Congregational Vitality and co-chair of the Cursillo Season of Reflection Committee. He served as a Deputy to General Convention in 2009 and 2012 for the Diocese of Southern Virginia, and is a delegate for Western North Carolina's delegation for Before his call to come to Western North Carolina, he served the Diocese of Southern Virginia on the Executive Board, Chair of the Liturgical Commission, and as Spiritual Director for the Cursillo Secretariat. Gary is passionate about God, Jesus, Mission, Ministry, and hopes to encourage all Christians to embrace the counter-culturalness of our faith. Gary earned his Doctor in Ministry (DMin) from Sewanee, writing on Family Systems and the Church. He also has an MBA in Negotiation and Conflict Management and a Graduate Certificate in Organizational and Leadership Management. Gary served as a Naval Officer for over 30 years, leading Sailors throughout the world. The Rev. Patty Mouer, St. Luke s, Asheville Nominated by: Jan Trantham Patty has served in the Diocese of Western North Carolina since 2000, and has been rector of St. Luke's, Asheville since She has been a member of the diocesan Christian Education Committee, member of the diocesan search committee for the Missioner for Youth & Young Adults, chaplain at Camp Henry and on Executive Council for 2 terms. Currently, she serves on the Camp Henry Board as the liaison to the Lake Logan Conference Center Board. She would be honored to serve the diocese and the broader church as a member of the Standing Committee. Standing Committee Lay Nominee George Sweet, Church of the Transfiguration, Saluda Nominated by: Jim Steckel For 60 plus years, George has been a faithful and dedicated Episcopalian and a devoted communicant of the Diocese of Western North Carolina. He has served on the vestry of All Saints Community (formerly St. Agnes) while living in Franklin, NC. He has also served on the vestry as both Sr. and Jr. Warden of the Church of the Transfiguration, Saluda, and has now been reelected to the vestry at Transfiguration, Saluda for Additionally, George has served, and is currently serving on the Lake Logan Board of Directors. In September 2016, George was elected by the Standing Committee to fill a vacancy, and has been an integral leader on a variety of diocesan matters. He brought a breadth of experience from his former profession as an executive and engineer for Nantahala Power and Light and Duke Power. It is clear that his experience, wisdom, and leadership skills have demonstrated a significant contribution to the Standing Committee, and his continued ministry to the committee is much needed.

2 Nominations for The Episcopal Foundation Positions Available (3-year term): 2 New Seats for Lay Communicants; 3 2nd Term Seats for Lay Communicants Episcopal Foundation New Seat Lay Nominee Sherree Brady, St. Peter by the Lake, Denver Nominated by: The Rev. Dr. Ron Taylor Sheree has been an active member of St. Peter by-the-lake in Denver, NC for 19 years. During that time, she has served on the Vestry as Junior and Senior Warden. As Senior Warden, Sheree navigated her parish through their Widen the Walls Capital Campaign, which is currently underway. She is a licensed lay person, and completed the 4-year Education for Ministry program, where she now serves as on EfM Co-Mentor. In addition to her spiritual formation ministries, and in response to the wonderful outpouring of love and support she received during her husband s illness and subsequent passing, Sheree helped create a formal meals program at St. Peter by the Lake, the HOPIN program (Helping Our Parishioners in Need). This program is now 50+ volunteers strong, and provides meals for the home-bound, as well as food for receptions following memorial services. Professionally, Sherry is retired from the Information Technology field, where she worked for 34 years managing the technology aspects of large business-driven projects. Sherry is eager and willing to serve on the Episcopal Foundation, and believes her experience, both spiritually and professionally, can be of benefit to our diocese. Episcopal Foundation 2nd Term Lay Nominees Larry Burda, Holy Spirit, Mars Hill Nominated by: The Rev. David McNair Larry graduated with a BS from Colorado State University in Business Administration, Human Resources and Psychology. He served in the US Air Force, and as Industrial Relations Manager for Collins/Rockwell, and was also Human Resources Manager for Honeywell Inc in four divisions in the US and Canada. After retiring from Honeywell, Larry owned and operated ACE Hardware & Building Supply and Rental in Mars Hill, NC. He was involved with the start up of Holy Spirit in 1985, and served as Sr. Warden and Jr. Warden a number of years. Larry chaired the building committee for the original structure, and again when a addition was constructed. Over the years, Larry has served as chairperson of Hot Springs Health Program, vice chairperson of Madison County Housing Coalition, chairperson of Madison County Visitor Center Board, Mars Hill University Advisory Board, Madison County Board of Adjustment and Mars Hill Town Zoning and Board of Adjustment. He has been a Rotary member for many years, and is a Licensed NC general contractor and retired NC Residential and Commercial Inspector. Grace Pless, Trinity, Asheville Nominated by: Jo Ann Hasskamp As an active member of Trinity, Asheville, since 1957, Grace has been involved in almost all positions from the kitchen to the altar. Daughter of an Episcopal priest and sister to four siblings who have served in the mission field, she is very thankful and proud to be part of the Diocese of Western North Carolina and desirous to participate in any way that she can. Judith Teele, Grace Church, Morganton Nominated by: Judith Teele Judith has been a member of Grace Church for 36 years, where she has served on the Vestry and has been a lay Eucharistic minister. She has also served on the following Boards within the Diocese: The Lake Logan Conference Center, the Valle Crucis Conference Center, The Executive Council and The Center for Spiritual Resources.

3 Nominations for the Executive Council of the Diocese Positions Available (3-year term): 1 Lay Communicant from each of the following Deaneries: Hendersonville, Piedmont, Mountain, Western; 1 Clergy from each of the following Deaneries: Foothills, Hendersonville Executive Council Lay Nominees Jim Bowden, St. Peter by the Lake, Denver Nominated by: The Rev. Dr. Ron Taylor Deanery: Piedmont Jim has been a member of St. Peter by-the-lake since the 1970 s. Married to Ann, with two adult children, Jim spent much of his working life with Duke Energy at the McGuire Nuclear Station near Charlotte. A lifelong Episcopalian, Jim has served St. Peter by-the-lake with several terms on the vestry, serving as both Junior and Senior Warden. He also serves on the Finance Committee, as an assistant treasurer, and with his wife leads the parish Memorial Garden Team. Jim also serves with the youth as St. Peter s Acolyte Master. Jim would bring many years of experience at the parish level, serving in program, finance, and vestry leadership, and would consider it an honor to serve the diocese on Executive Council. Martha Smith, St. John in the Wilderness, Flat Rock Nominated by: The Rev. Joyce Beschta Deanery: Hendersonville For many years, Marti has been an invaluable member of two congregations: her home parish, St. John in the Wilderness, Flat Rock, as well as Transfiguration, Saluda, for whom she serves as Parish Administrator. In her capacity as Parish Administrator, she uses her administrative talents to help the congregation for which she works, and she also serves as an unofficial mentor to other parish secretaries/ administrators when they call her. Marti has served one term on Executive Council, working with the effort to pay off the debt for Lake Logan. She is a current member and the treasurer of the Foundation for the Diocese of WNC. From her arrival 14 years ago, Martha Smith has gladly served St. John in the Wilderness in many ways. Her experience as a newly retired parish administrator was quickly employed to improve several key aspects of parish life. She almost immediately created a new parish website. She later served as the editor and publisher of the newly expanded and improved parish newsletter, publishing an electronic as well printed version which has now been turned over to the Parish Secretary. She has been a faithful member of the choir, a lay reader, and current Co-Chair of the Altar Guild, and has been instrumental in producing the fourth edition of our self-published parish picture directory.

4 Nominations for the Executive Council of the Diocese Positions Available (3-year term): 1 Lay Communicant from each of the following Deaneries: Hendersonville, Piedmont, Mountain, Western; 1 Clergy from each of the following Deaneries: Foothills, Hendersonville Executive Council Clergy Nominees The Rev. Susan Buchanan, St. James, Lenoir Nominated by: The Rev. Marshall Jolly Deanery: Foothills Although new to this diocese, the Rev. Susan Buchanan is not new to church leadership positions on diocesan and national levels, and also believes that getting involved is one of the best ways to get to know a new diocese. She welcomes the opportunity to offer her experience and energy to this Diocese, and believes that bringing in experience from other places can be beneficial to any organization. Susan graduated from Virginia Seminary and was ordained in She served as Associate Rector and Coordinator of Youth Ministries at Christ Church, Winchester, VA, and was also a member of the Boards of Directors of Blue Ridge Hospice and AIDS Response Effort, Inc. For the Diocese, she was on the UTO Grant Committee, the Parish Youth Ministries Committee, and the Committee on Constitution and Canons. She served the Mid-Atlantic Parish Training Program for four years on the Board of Directors (including one year as president of the board), and then was the Executive Director of the program for two years. In 2002, Susan accepted a call as Rector of Christ Church, North Conway, NH. In NH, she served on the Diocesan Council, the Evangelism Committee, the Re-imagining Committee," and the Commission on Ministry. She was elected as a deputy to General Convention from New Hampshire. In 2014, Susan accepted a call as Rector of St. Thomas, Richmond, VA. In August of this year, she joyfully returned to mountains and smaller town life, as she accepted the call as Rector of St. James, Lenoir. Susan enjoys backpacking and hiking. She is married to Rick Smith, who at this time remains in Richmond at his job on the IT staff of Union Presbyterian Seminary. Rick served 20 years in the Navy, is a Verger, and is in his second year of EFM. They make good use of technology as they talk over FaceTime for an hour each night. The Rev. Wes Shields, Church of the Transfiguration, Bat Cave Nominated by: The Rev. Dr. Joel Hafer Deanery: Hendersonville Wes was born in Asheville, NC in 1977 and graduated from Enka High School in He attended two years at Lenoir Rhyne University in Hickory and received a B.S. in Natural Resource Management, Ecosystem Assessment from N.C. State University in In 2003, he completed a Master of Theology program at the School of Theology at the University of the South in Sewanee. Wes grew up attending St. Luke s, Asheville, and he was active in Happening throughout his high school years. During his college years, he worked as a counselor at Camp Luther Rock and Camp Henry. He was the Youth Minister for St. Alban s, Hickory between college and seminary. After serving as the Assistant Rector of St. Mark s, Gastonia ( ), he served as Rector of St. Andrews in the Pines (Pinedale, WY ), and St. Columba s (Boothbay Harbor, ME ). Wes currently serves as Rector of Church of the Transfiguration, Bat Cave. For several years, he has been the chaplain at Camp Henry for various weeks including parent/first timer and high school. Wes and his wife, Laura have three children: Emma (9), Cody (6) and Tucker (4). Their second child, Mattie, died in 2009 of SIDS when she was 2 ½ months old. It was after her death and a terminal illness affecting Laura s father that brought them back to WNC in At that time, he served as a supply priest and part time youth minister for Grace & St. Luke s parishes while operating his own erosion control & tree service until being called to Transfiguration in Bat Cave.

5 Nomination for Trustees of the University of the South Positions Available (3-year term): 1 Lay Communicant Trustees of the University of the South Nominee Dr. Bill Stiefel, Jr., Incarnation, Highlands Nominated by: Lana Jordan Bill is currently serving as a Trustee to Sewanee on the Growth and Development and New Trustee Orientation committees and is eligible for re-election. Sewanee alumni C 60', Bill has also served as a member of the Executive Council and Bishop's Advisory Committee, and Vestry, Senior Warden. Bill is a Former US Navy officer serving with the Second Marine Division. He is a member of the Sewanee Club of Atlanta, Sewanee Club of Highlands, Former President and 20 board member of the Highlands/Cashiers Land Trust, and is the current President of the Hudson Library Board of Trustees. He is very active in service to Sewanee, attending all Board of Trustees meetings held in October and his committee meetings in April.
